so I'm usually a sysadmin by day, and like all sys admins I'm a lazy asshole and don't want to work while I'm off. That being said, about 7 years ago I plunked down some cash to get a 12-bay synology, and I have to say for a consumer product, it's been rock solid(24x7 uptime, no failed drives(3tb enterprise hitachi).
So now I'm in the market for a new nas, but I'm thinking about doing it myself this time. I was thinking doing linux+zfs by hand, or freenas, but I cannot find a good tower that can support 12x3.5 SATA drives.
Can anyone point me in the direction of a solid tower? Or, should I continue to be a lazy fuck and just get another synology(which might be cheaper)?
Xpenology + hotswap case.
It's possible to be on the current release of synology software.
>>61075827
whoa - DSM is open-source?!?
When you say hotswap tower, are you suggesting that I have the boards in a different case, and keep the drives isolated?
>>61075827
What is a good hotswap case? I thought about sticking a sata drive rack in a consumer case, but the market has been filled with driveless memeshit.
Intel confirmed for garbage! Intel shills on a suicide watch! Intel stock sliding further down into junk status!
>TL;DR: unfixed Skylake and Kaby Lake processors could, in some
situations, dangerously misbehave when hyper-threading is enabled.
Disable hyper-threading immediately in BIOS/UEFI to work around the
problem. Read this advisory for instructions about an Intel-provided
fix.
HAHAHAHAH... basically disable the whole fucking CPU!

>unfixed skylake and kabylake cpu's
What are we even talking about here
>>61075581

Literally fucking nothing, intel fixes their mistakes AMD just releases garbage
Fuck off AMD shill
Is this NCURSES guide any good?
http://tldp.org/HOWTO/NCURSES-Programming-HOWTO/
It hasn't been edited since 2005, but then again, neither has the C language.
Does anyone know any better resources if this one sucks rats ass?
I read it some years ago and I didn't like it so much.
Unfortunately, I couldn't find something better.
Does anyone know a good book about it?
I like ncurses so much but I think that now it must have a OO implementation like gtkmm.
>>61075482
But the latest revision of C is from 2011 dufus.
I'd love to be proven wrong, but I don't think you'll find anything better.
So apparently your new Babby Lake or Skylake processor will inexplicably make errors unless you immediately disable hyperthreading

Fixed on my system before I even knew there was a problem.

What are your specs? Would you actually be able to run shit at 4K 60hz?
1440p 144hz because video games
If you play games and have a decent CPU go 144Hz. Even regular desktop usage feels much smoother.
Name a single reason, besides autism, why would anyone use Linux.

I was thinking about assembling a desktop computer and have been reading about the AMD's CPU being a nice alternative to the Intel. What do you guys think ? For instance the 1700x vs Intel's 6700K ?
Stay away from Intel.

Please, help me make a decision on a 1070 card!
I am building my first PC and I have everything together EXCEPT for a GPU. My build is mostly black/white and the case has a window. I was wondering which 1070 I should choose. I don't think I'd ever need to OC.
Do all 1070's perform the same if I don't OC? Should I just go with the cheapest?
This Asus Dual is $380 new at microcenter. Debating this one unless you guys have other suggestions.
>>61073139
I own the same card and it runs pretty hot compared to other cooler designs.
>>61073139

Don't buy that
Since it has no fan control you will always hear sound when not gaming and in full load is quite loud.
Even the founders edition is alot quieter than it, which is what I replaced with
>hard drives are the same since half a decade ago
>SSD are now so popular that the juden is inflating the prices
>cheap unlimited clouds pop out everywhere
Was everything part of the kikekaku?
OP, just like PV cells and lithium batteries, with every doubling of the manufacturing capacity, price falls by 20%.
This is some serious diminishing returns.
>>61073097
>cheap unlimited clouds pop out everywhere
That's variable, not s much this year.
Most chink services with TBs of storage canceled those plans and took the storage back.
4 TB HDD can be found easily for less than $100.
Though I bought a 2 TB drive for $60 in 2009/2010 before the Asian floods of factories raised prices. They are just about the same price today.
