Hey guys I bought a second hand chainsaw. I need a new chain because the one it has is far gone. I've ordered one online that matches the old one but when I search the bar model it says it needs a 56 link chain but the chain I have on the saw now is a 57 link chain?
>>988786
Depends on if its the stock bar or not.
>>988792
I've searched the bar model but I doesn't show exactly the same one mines a bit different. will the chain still fit if it's one link to big? I know the chain is the right pitch and gauge.
>>988793
Most likely no.
Can /diy/ tell me what this tool is for specifically?
Hint 1: It's made by a company named "Egerton"
Hint 2: It's likely 20+ years old.
Hint 3: It's likely used in carrier telecommunications.
I really have no idea, and would like to know. I reckon it's some sort of old school crimper or punch.
Probably a cable terminator, ones we use now are more like a big staple gun looking thing though
>>988770
what sort of cable are we talking? I was thinking it is some sort of coax compression fitting thing..
>>988775
Coax is still used to some extent, mostly there's more modern variations of it depending on the application- feeder types which uses a full copper sheath to carry signals up to the antennas and waveguides which channel microwave.
That tools well before my time though so at the moment I'm just guessing its a cable terminator for some type of connector which isn't very common anymore.
TL:DR; I want to convert a double socket into a triple, I'm not an electrician, am I likely to break my house circuitry?
My home office has a double UK power socket on the wall in an inconvenient place, which means I have to run a power cable across the floor to power my PC. I'm looking at extending the socket to another location, using some flat power cables run under the carpet, doing either:
1) wiring a plug up to one end and a socket on the other (basically making it an extension cord); or
2) wiring one end into the double socket and the other end into a plug (effectively turning my double wall socket into a triple).
Either way, my PC runs off an 8-socket power strip which will be plugged into this, and the other 2 sockets will be rarely used (maybe for the vacuum cleaner or something).
Is there anything that I should be careful about if I do either of these things? Is it possible to overload it (more so than I currently could) or anything, would I need to add a fuse in, etc.? I'm competent enough at wiring things, but my knowledge on how the black magic of electricity works is limited.
>>988462
>im a noob
>how do i kill myself
Seriously, if you have to ask, don't do it.
>>988465
This.
You don't know the basics. If someone with basic knowledge were to do this, they wouldn't have to ask, seeing as how you do, it's a recipe for disaster.
Leave it alone and just use a shop bought extension lead.
That's what I needed to hear. Will do the sensible thing and not touch the electrics.
I need some help with my university project. I'm trying to find something (A chemical, liquid, etc) that helps with cigarette's degradation. We found out, for example, that acetone turns the cigarette into some kind of rare substance. But it doesn't really work with what we want to do. Do you know any chemical or substance that helps with the degradation of what's left of the cigarette after you finished smoking? Maybe something that accelerates the natural degradation of the cigarette or something that turns it into some other material. Anything is well received
>>988452
Don't come to diy for homework help.
>>988452
>something that turns it into another material
Are you talking about alchemy? I'd love to figure this out too, OP.
>>988460
I hear promising things about the scorcerers/philosophers stone, OP might want to look into it, though I hear some of the ingredients for it are a little sketchy, something about a lot of peoples souls? I dunno, should probably just invest in an ash tray OP
What's your excuse for not owning a Porter Cable 690?
I don't need one?

What is this hobby called?
>>988423
It's called Cross Stitch.
Why didn't you just ask the person whos facebook you got that from?
>>988424
Too scared. Thanks!
Is it hard to do?
>>988427
No, you get patterns which tells you the colours and how many X's go in each row, and then you just do one set of diagonals so it looks like this //////// then once you reach the end of a row you go back with the other diagonals \\\\\\\ to from your X's then you just go down the design until it's done, probably the easiest form of sewing.
a friend and i are planning to make a replica of this bust
what is the cheapest way of doing this (other than actually carving the thing out of marble)
someone on the net did a 3d scan of it irl and we have downloaded the file
>>988348
Make a mold
Carve it out of concrete
>>988348
if you are smart enough, use some cad software to make many layers of contour lines of the thing, then cut up the layers with cardboard or sheets of any material, then stack them up
I've got a question about modifying my toaster.
Now, here's some background:
Long ago my old toaster started acting funny and one side of heating elements stopped working, this was producing toast which was actually only toasted on one side.
Over time I came to appreciate the subtle interplay between the toasted and untoasted sides and began to prefer it over regular toast done on both sides.
Well fast forward to the now-times and that toaster has popped it's last slice and headed off to the scrapheap in the sky, so I bought a new one.
This new one is very basic, has no special features, just an arm and a "doneness" dial.
My question is this: Without being able to show you any schematics or images of the specific toaster (It is some no-brand cheapo thing) what do you think are the chances that I can simply open it up and snip out the nichrome wire on two sides then still have it actually work?
Many thanks.
>>988205
anon, this is retarded.
Press the button labeled "bagel" on your toaster, and BAM one side of each slot turns off
it's literally that easy
>>988206
I've never even seen a toaster with such a function.
I should have included that I do not live in a particularly advanced place.
There are no buttons on my toaster, just the arm you push down to cock it and the dial you twiddle to tune it.
>>988209
I do not live in a particularly advanced place.
>Brit or Canacuck then...they're the only ones who are known to 'twiddle'...
Has anyone been able to make a bit of a business out of it working out of an apartment?
How do you sterilize substrate in volume? Will an oven at 300F do?
>>988150
>working out of an apartment
no
>Will an oven at 300F do?
no
You need temperature/pressure to kill all the contaminates. Commercial growers pipe 500*F steam into their entire grow houses + substrate for a full day or more to sterilize everything.
>>988153
Is there any risk if a crop goes bad, or does it just ruin the materials?
You could run a for profit out of an apartment, but they would not be culinary mushrooms.
They would be of the psychedelic variety, and they make tons of money.
any advice on how to set up a hidden camera in my house? also any reccomendations of good cameras?
Make sure it's water proof or the steam from the shower will ruin it.
>>988139
Bumping for interest since I just moved in to a new place and I think the landlord may be a creep.
>>988141
Shower? What if it's not going in the bathroom?
Did I fuck up building my squat rack
>>988134
What the fuck did you do? why would you hack up your ceiling you retard?
>>988145
Hahaha. You took that bait so hard.
don't worry, once OP gets ripped on squats he'll just lift the whole ceiling so that it's high enough
I want to build an amplifier for my monacord mce 4000 electret mic.
Anybodey got any idea on how to do it?
>>988088
do you mean a PA-style amp, or a preamp? two rather different things....
>>988088
Have you tried looking up amplifier design? Do that first, then ask specific questions once you understand what you're trying to do.
>>988088
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=electret+microphone+amplifier+circuit+386
The 386 audio amplifier is one of your best bets, good quality audio sound, simple to implement and powerful enough to drive up to a small 8 ohm speaker. Better than any dodgy transistor based preamp.
>>988091
I guess he means preamp, but who knows.
Hi /diy/,
What's the easiest way to strip paint from a radiator without buying expensive sand blasting equipment?
There's about 2 or 3 layers of paint on it which is cracking and flaking in some parts (left by previous home owners). Right now I'm taking it off by gently flaking it off with a scraper/stanley knife, which is taking a long time. I'm half tempted to take off the parts that are flaking and just paint it all. Thanks.
>>988056
soak it in acetone, then wirewool go over the whole thing, in acetone... wear gloves etc
Try a heat gun.
>>988056
Paint stripper.
I'd like to mount some kind of engine in my bike. To be more specific, i'm thinking about buying one of those cheap 50ccm mini-children-quad engines and strapping it on rear bike rack - it'll probably be unbalanced but screw it, i'm riding ~20km per day from village to city and this kind of aid would be great.
So, question: what is the best way to connect engine with bike wheel? Right now i'm thinking about getting additional chain and reserving one gear from cassette (or whatever rear gear thingie is called, sorry, i'm not native english speaker) for engine chain. It's not bad idea, but there is huge drawback - i'd have to do (less demanding) legwork because cassette would power front gear and pedals. Is there some kind of double-sided hub with two independent freewheels so i could spin only engine or only pedals?
I know there is a lot of pre-made solutions ready to be purchased, but i think i want to fool around, do something fun.
Or just buy a motorcycle? It'll be a lot safer and all...
>>988052
> Is there some kind of double-sided hub with two independent freewheels so i could spin only engine or only pedals?
Sounds like you want a flip flop hub for fixies. Or maybe fabricate something that attaches to disk brake mounts, since driving the wheel from the left side would try to unscrew the cog and put a lot of stress on the lockring.
But have you though about just getting a better bike with decent tires? 20km a day should be easy if you're in half decent shape and don't live on top of a mountain and work on top of another mountain. I do it and it barely even counts as daily exercise. Unless you're trying to do it on a crappy Wal-Mart mountain bike or one of those shitty 40 pound Dutch "city" bikes, since neither are meant to go more than a mile at a stretch.
>>988069
This is /diy/, not /just buy whatever because it'll be a lot safer and all/. You seem to be confused.
Hey guys, I am currently collecting materials to make a hot tub like the one in the picture. I am going to be making it square not round for strength and it will be easier to make. I've got the coil, pipes, fibreglass and gel coat all for free already. someone I know it working on making a 3d model for me to make a plan from. However as I have been thinking about making it I was wondering about the displacement of the water. I want to make it big enough for 6/7 people how do hot tubs usually work in regards to always being full whether there is one or 6/7 people inside it? The only way I can think it to have a run off for overflow into a tank that then pumps back into the hot tub. (as I am filtering the tank anyway I could just hook it up to the same pipe work) Yet none of the hot tubs you can buy seem to have the same set up?
>>987998
See how in your pic there is a rather large gab between the water level and the top of the tub? That's to allow for displacement, just build up the sides high enough to allow for the water to rise without spilling over.
>>987998
Round is the strongest shape for resisting internal pressure.
>>988036
This anon is correct.
We used to have a redneck hot tub out at my Grandparents family farm.
Similar setup to your picture. Used a metal cattle trough for the inside, think it had some ratchet straps to re-enforcement and a wooden surround.
The main issue with it was that there was no temperature control. We eventually stopped using it because one of my young cousins got burned because it had been running for a long time.
Luckily the burns weren't that bad 2nd degree burns to about 50% of the body. Luckily it wasn't that deep.
