Hi /diy/

I'm trying to come up with a simple and relatively economical way to filter water from a river. This water will be collected in a water container and be used to shower with (not to drink) even though the water is relatively clean as far as rivers go I'd rather filter, and sterilize it first to be on the safe side.

many of the existing water filtration solutions are either for:

1) small scale wilderness/survival purposes (katadyn,sawyer,lifestraw etc)
2) large scale installations for drinking in african villages
3) home point of use drinking (e.g berkey)
4) large scale industry use

So none of those are really suitable for collecting and filtering a large amount of water. Either they're too small with a slow flow rate, or they're gigantic installations

After a bit of thinking, I figured out the most economical non chemical solution is to buy standard 10" filter kits and just repurchase when they become clogged. The workflow will be like this

1) pump water directly from a hose through sediment prefilter,
2) then through a finer filter (0.5 micron)
3) then through a UV filter, into a holding container

There's a guy here who's done a similar thing.

The pump I will be using instead is this:

The first filter says in the manual it connects directly with 1/4" plastic tubing.

The second filter seems to say it connects with 3/4" male NPT nipples.

The problem is I'm already stuck, I have no idea how to connect the hose to the respective water filters.

The closest thing I have found that looks like it might work for the second filter at least is https://www.amazon.co.uk/Hozelock-2159-9000-Adapter-hoses/dp/B0034G5NR2

But I really have no idea as it seems like most people out there aren't connecting water filters to a hose in that case. We don't have a lowes or home depot in my country so it's a bit harder to find everything under one roof.

Could anyone of you diy experts help deciphering how it could be done, or suggest if there's any specific parts to buy to connect up either of these filters to a hose?

A river? How the hell are you getting away with that? most rivers are highly protected by the state. Either way I would not use water from it. In my area at least they are pretty much toxic and polluted. The whole house filters you show are a good start. Creek water or rain water would be better. A sand bar or some light, easily replaced prefilter should be first. UV is a waste of power and money. Just get a 2 micron if you need to drink or eat with it.

A few months ago I came here looking for a chain that wasn't just loose links, but could both coil up and be rigid and straight when arranged correctly. Someone mentioned "barrel chain", but I came to the conclusion that chain of any type would be too heavy. So I'm back with a new method, using spring steel similar to a tape measure.

A tape measure will extend and stay straight for about...what 9-10 feet when used correctly? I want to make a device that could be applied as well as improve the design of a tape measure to make it extend 30 ft and stay straight, in any direction. It would also be nice for this device to be able to transport loads on the end (load capacity will obviously depend on the length it has been extended and the strength of the spring steel). The purpose of this device is to make both a controllable retracting/expending semi-rigid extendable tether that requires only mechanical energy of a winch to propel the line forward.

I need to know if such a device is already in existence, and pointing out any flaws with my idea is also an added bonus. I would also like to know where I may purchase spring steel like the stuff inside tape measures. I would just rip one apart, but i want something a bit thicker.

TL;DR: Expand steel dong

If you could design it in a way that when the tape comes out of the end of your roller it is in a triangle shape, you should be able to get it to go a long distance.
>>
>>1000231
yes i thought of that, but it needs to function from most angles. A triangular design would crimp sideways. The best design I can think of at the moment is something resembling a chinese yo yo with a coiling steel spring.

Hurricane Season is here, I'm preparing my game room as the family shelter after we return from evacuation. I want to use quiet, fuel efficient inverters because last major hurricane it was nearly impossible to find gas, I need to shitpost on 4chan using my comfy desktop computer, and thieves won't easily here them humming away.
>Have a Wen 52600i 2000 watt inverter generator aka Yamaha clone for camping / power tools
>thinking of buying 2 more because they are cheap, simple, and work well.
>want to wire up something similar to pic related and power game room via extension cords.

Questions:
Honda EU2000i generators have been proven to have triple parallel capability. Does anyone know if Yamahas or their clones do?
>from what I understand the inverter generators, that do not use a communication cable, auto detect and match waveform of first generator started up, so I figure 3 Wen 52600i's should have same ability as 3 Honda eu3000i's.

Does the triple parallel kit of pic related send two 120 volt signals of same phase to both hot wires on the 50 amp plug? I was thinking about having two 30 amp RV plugs since I have a couple of RV cords already. This would be 4800 max normal watts, 6000 surge at 120 volts, giving about 40 max sustained amps.
>can I just use thick wire and say fuck it or is there another fire risk I am not taking into consideration?

>>
>>999351
Should also note I am a fan of redundancy and flexibility. Figure if 1 generator goes out, I just have to choose between ac and shit posting.
>>
>>999351
I cant tell from your picture, is the output 120 only or 120/240 depending on the receptacle you plug into.
>>
>>999476
I'm pretty sure it is 120 with both legs powered from same hot in phase, so pic related would kill 240 devices, but if distribution downstream downstream only goes to 120 stuff, should be a non issue, just has half power.

I need to sharpen a lot of commercial mower blades. I currently use a classic two wheel
bench grinder light duty. I want to make a jig to get an even, quick and constant result.
But the god darn thing has no tool rest and it doesn't really make sense to adapt something.
I'm not sure what kind of steel, other than "1/4" (6.4 mm) thick heat-treated steel" that sells
for about $50 USD for a set of three.

Should I buy a beefy heavy duty bench grinder or a decent belt sander?

This is baby shit mang. I made these jig plans in my head in like 30 seconds, so let me know if there need to be changes.

You need to pieces of steel, one angle, one flat.

The circle thing is your grinder. You're gonna want to weld your angle piece to the flat one at the angle you want it cut at. Then use a clamp or vice grips to secure the blade to the jig, with the end you're sharpening hanging off the side so you wont be grinding on your jig. Hows that sound?

Hi /diy/ I'm hoping to paint up some weights I got off craigslist they're a little beat up and have some rust on them. Do I need to do anything special to prep them beyond cleaning them off or do those rust paints really work and I can just paint over it?

No rust paints dont work
use a wire wheel or a wire brush and remove all the rust before you paint.
>>
>>998218
You can do almost anything with the power of flex seal!
>>
Buy a small tin of Por15, a pack of cheap brushes, and wire wheel the rust off. Then clean the weights really well, let dry and then brush the Por15 on. They'll look brand new and never rust again.

Why is it so hard to make one?! First, I try using my raspberry pi which doesn't work (cause its a B+,) than I tried making one through the good ol' transistor radio schematic (with the oscillator chip and whatnot.) I don't have the parts, so I can just drive to a radioshack, right? But they are closing all of their stores! Ugh. Are there any quick alternatives I can try for making an fm radio station (online, through my raspberry pi B+, etc?) And if /diy/ can help me, I'll give you all the frequency so if you're in my area you can listen to some tunes! The transmitting range I'm looking for is about 1 mile, so if possible try keeping that in mind. I've wasted 10 hours so far working on this. I'm also consulting /mu/ on what music choice I should do. Thanks!

Hey /diy/
I'm looking for something that you can basically paint onto a leather sole to protect it from wear. I was thinking bitumen may work but I'm not sure if it would adhere sufficiently and withstand the abuse soles have to. Also it may melt on hot surfaces.

--also it would leave ugly black marks on any floors, when you dragged your feet even a tiny bit. Which you probably do, because most people do--you just never saw direct evidence of it before.

It would help to explain what kind of shoes these are and why exactly you want to coat them with anything. Does it need to be removable later?...

The short answer is that you would need to use urethane or silicone rubber, since those would not mark up floors. Natural rubber will.

Alternately if these are leather dress shoes, you could call a local shoe shop/cobbler... For those kinds of shoes they would likely know best.

I need this cable for my cctv system. The yellow is coax for video and the other part is for power. My question: are power cables (red and black) graded specifically for AC or DC?

I need to power my camera with 24vac but the reviewers on Amazon keep saying it's for DC cameras.

Wires are rated for voltage
They dont give a shit if its AC or DC they just conduct
So if the wire can handle the peak voltage present In The system your golden

Thank you.

But I'm looking at something like this: >https://www.surveillance-video.com/accessory-st-pmj60b.html/
and it doesn't mention any voltage tolerance. Do I just assume that it can handle at least 24vac?

>Wires are rated for voltage

That's what I always thought, but seeing the description of "DC Power Cable" and all of those mouth breathers on Amazon calling it a DC cable made me question it.

Hi!
I want to water my plants on my balcony while i'm not there.
I bought an electrovalve which works with 12v, 8W, and I want to supply it, or not, with a laptop. I thought the serial port would have do that, but I can't get any current from it, according to my voltmeter.
Is it possible, do you have any ideas?
16 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
This project is probably above your current understanding of how serial ports work.

Serial ports are communication "devices"
They are really only used to send and receive data.

What you need is a controller board hooked up to the valve.

valve-->controller board-->serial port

The serial port sends a signal to the controller board.
The controller board sees the signal and tells a relay to turn on/off the valve.
>>
The laptop would be used as a power supply and a timer
>>
You're right I don't know serial ports much..
I just want to get some 12v from my laptop. I thought I would have used a linux command like rtcwake, which wakes the computer and that way the 12v from anywhere would be active. And then, 1h later the computer would go back to sleep for 23h.. something like that. I know there is some 12v on the cd drive, but it would be easier to get it from an external port
