I want to go out into the woods and weave a basket with materials I find. I live in Massachusetts and I'm having a hard time finding what I could use.
I was reading that a local Native American tribe would use sweet grass, but that's really about it. Couldn't find out how to make the basket with sweet grass either.
Strictly looking to find the mats in the woods and make on my own. Prefer not to buy anything. Or if you can recommend something that isn't weaving a basket I'd be interested.
Look into pine straw baskets. They are made with really long pine needles. Easy to find assuming you know what a pine tree looks like. The longer the better.
Good luck!
Grass coil baskets op, thats what you wanna look up, super easy to make and it sounds like youve got the right materials available.

Use twigs. You should have birch saplings around there.
Hi /diy/, I want to mount a 150lb enclosure (with all server stuff inside) to a concrete wall.
I plan on using tapcon screws. I was told it would be good if I drill a hole through a wooden 2x4, then attach the 2x4 to the concrete. Then I can attach the enclosure to the 2x4.
What do you think ? I am worried that the 2x4 may not support the 150lbs.
to the top!
Use concrete anchors.
>>1001341
Just use concrete expander anchors, they are made for this. How many Units is the rack?
What are some good tips to keep black berries from growing back every year? I've been cutting them down to the dirt for two years now but they just keep coming back.

There always Round-Up, OP.
Hey there /diy/! I just wanted to ask if anyone has any experience with buying, working with, living in, or building any homes made of shipping containers. I'm looking for guides or services that can help me out. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks a bunch!
Nice thread guy.
From what I understand, its cheaper to just make a new structure from scratch. And easier.
As far as I can see, the only point would be to make like a dive office for construction sites that could be transported easily

Hey /diy/
How are these kinds of switches wired?
There are six pins, does the slider just close the contacts across each pair?
>>1000996
I was mostly curious if I could wire it like this
>>1000996
look up 'double pole double throw', but yeah if you want to reverse the polarity of a signal, that's one way
>>1001005
So, if each other those yellow leads went to a light, it could control 3 lights separately by sliding the switch?
I have a welder has started tripping the breaker about 30% of the time time I strike the arc. The breaker and circuit are big enough for the welder, in theory, so I assume that either the breaker or the welder are wearing out.
I would like to get an ammeter to measure how much current is being pulled by the welder when the breaker pops. Will those energy-saver gadgets from Home Depot work? Or maybe one of those clamp things that electricians have on their multimeters?
>>999563
is the breaker new? i'd try putting in a new one.
'energy saver gadget' like a kill-a-watt should give you a max reading but someone will have to be watching it on amps display mode when you strike the arc ( at least on mine ) because it doesn't save that info.
http://www.amazon.com/TS-836A-Energy-Voltage-Electricity-Monitor/dp/B00E945SJG
- remembers peak usage (allegedly) - $15 = maybe 5% -/+ accurate tho, but, be enough for this. Whats the welder rated at, breaker can/should have a little headroom, but normal breakers (non GFCI, etc.) dont usually start wandering in their trip rating either.
a kill-a-watt type device might be destroyed, or at least damaged, if you try to use it in a case like this. a better idea is a clamp probe with a ''surge'' or ''inrush'' setting. which is not gonna be cheap, i dont think.
more info here: http://en-us.fluke.com/training/training-library/test-tools/clamp-meters/how-and-why-to-measure-inrush-current.html
what i would do personally is to use an old broken clamp meter i have, and just connect the pick-p coil to the audio card on the computer, while running a software scope.
Anyone dabble in Shortwave radios? I was thinking about picking one up, but I'm not very knowledgeable on the subject. Listening to foreign stations and number stations seems like a nice little hobby to get into. Tips or good models?
>>999316
add some extra coils to an old AM radio and it will pickup other frequencies.

>>999319
Thanks for the interesting read. I was really curious about buying a good model shortwave radio to just mess around on. Do you have any recommendations? I'm extremely curious about number stations.

Rate this crest pls
Phallic/10
Tower is too dark on that dark red background, would be shit/10 visibility at a distance.
Consider lightening the tower up. It's the main piece of your crest.
Also, don't let such a pretty gold border bleed into the olive branch, it dilutes the impression from the gold.
What are the general calculations for building a fence? I need to figure out how much material I need for around 60-70 feet of fencing.
>>999120
Calculate the volume of your yard, subtract that from the perimeter of the height.
>>999120
Google.com
>>999120
a = width of spar / (width of spar + width of gap)
b = height - bottom gap
c = length (=60-70ft?)
total length = c * a * b
is assuming NO WASTAGE
wastage is something like
height modulo timber length / timber length
multiply by wastage then add 10% for good luck
i am not an expert in eithe maths or fencing so this could be completely wrong but i tried my best.
How would I get my pipes to look like this?
>>998588
You buy a full blown stainless steel exhaust and they eventually do it on their own from the heat.
lookup steel colours
you'll see
>>998588
carefully use a pencil torch till desired color appears ~700 deg. F.
Or run your engine till high temp.
As we’re well into the yard maintenance season, how about a yard equipment thread of stuff we either have or would like to have?
I have the pictured Ariens lawn mower, that I bought a couple years back ($700) to replace my 20+ year old Ariens mower that had given up the ghost and while I like the caster wheels, (pretty much mandatory IMO) they changed the drive system design over the years and I dislike the cut out in the deck for the drive belt on the new mower, which allows dust and clipping to blow out.
>>997062
Not my pics but I’ve also got an Ariens ST724 snowblower, (in much better shape) that I call the “Ariens Nation Runway Sweeper” which is unstoppable. Two years or so back, when we had the Snowpocalypse winter here in Michigan, I was King Shit of the street and would snowblow the sidewalk almost all the way up and down my street, as those little pussy 2-stroke singe-stage blowers were wholly insufficient.

If I had me some acreage, I’d dig having one of these;
I'm trying to salvage 2 lcd monitors from a former store display.
I want to be able to use the screens as monitors, and I'd need them to plug into a computer easily (usb cable, microusb to usb cable, etc).
I've already taken it apart somewhat (nothing irreversible, only screws and cables) and I now have a screen with an lcd ribbon sticking out of it.
What can I do with this to make it into a monitor? I obviously need a way to power it and a method of transferring data, but I don't know where to begin. I can remove and use some modules and stuff from the inside of the case if needed.
Here's the screen before I opened it.
Here's another angle with the I/O ports in view.
And here is a closer look at the LCD ribbon that comes out of the screen. I believe that it's a 40 pin ribbon.

I was putting together a weight bar when this happened. There's a little metal pin you have to pound through the aligned holes to hold the bar together. Then the bar inside fell out and this happened.
Any ideas on how to get the pin out?
>>1001994
Not sure exactly what I'm looking at, maybe another pic from a different angle and also what's up with the blood smear on the wall
>>1001994
You already hammered the roll pin in, and you want to remove it?
Use a punch, but dont expect the hole or the roll pin to ever be tight again.
>>1001996
Thats nothing to worry about. Just a little misunderstanding.
Anyway, I managed to get it out myself and it seems just fine. Thanks anyway!
Hey /diy/, I've got a 250W KEF subwoofer with a dead amp (pic related). I'm thinking of repurposing it as a subwoofer for use in my Corolla (has aftermarket radio). I thought maybe I could save some money by building my own amp from scratch. I've got plenty of free time over the summer so why the fuck not? Could be a fun project.
>many of the parts from the subwoofer's original amplifier are still functional and could be useful
>needs to run off of 12VDC power source from the car battery
Good luck. You'll need it. Guaranteed headache.
Will you design the amp from scratch or use different DIY stuff from eBay?
I know quite a bit about power electronics, and generating a higher voltage from 12v with substantial wattage, is not easy! Especially because you would need more than one voltage for your control.
If I were you, I would buy a 12V boost module from eBay. Go with something physically big, they overrated power a lot, and neglect sufficient cooling..
Then find a class d amplifier module, and combine in a box. Add additional decoupling after the boost supply.
>>1001913
Probably going to get kits from eBay as needed if they end up being cheaper.
What do I do about going from 12VDC to a bipolar [some voltage]DC as required for the amplifier?
I've been looking Into building a yurt and was wondering if /diy/ has any advice before I get started. Alittle background information. I live in Texas so building codes and heating aren't massive issues.
Shit I already know
1. using cedar wood for construction
2. lattice work will require a jig for proper construction
3. Double bubble insulation should be sufficient for Texas
4. The skin of the yurt is going to be very expensive and there isnt much you can do about that
Things I'd love advice on
1. The math involved in creating lattice work
2. General building tips for a inexperienced builder
All advice is welcome thank you for your time and advice
Not that I know a shit about yurts, but maybe you could use cotton for the skin walls.
In case you really do this, please, take a fuckton of pictures. I am really interested.

OP here
These guys have alot of parts for sale and what not but even if I used found materials off Craigslist it's going to cost $2,000 bucks for their treated canvas. Cotton is great for the summer and when it's dry very breathable and cheap but it doesn't like heavy rains and mold and mildew become a problem it would require treating regularly as well as waterproofing.
When I do start construction later this summer il post here and keep y'all updated.
