How do I know if I can drill through glass without breaking it?

I read that if the glass youre drilling is tempered you shouldnt drill it. Pic related, I wanted to drill a hole in a tiny fish bowl that resembles this.

Tempered glass is used for things like car windows and panels likely to be bumped in use, which would produce dangerous, large shards if broken if they were normal glass. Fish bowls are not tempered, so drill away. You have the right kind of bit, right?

Hey /diy/ I've been working tirelessly the past few days, trying to hand carve one of these artist's mannequins in the bottom picture. The one I'm making isn't a human model though. I bought a cheap one and took it apart to see how the joints worked, and found out it uses these neat little springs (top pic). The right side is a hook wound into a spring with a taper on the end, and the left side is a hook that has one end bent into a tiny loop. The looped end is inside the tapered part of the spring. This allows the two ends to be twisted around, independently of each other, without breaking the spring. Now my question, what are these types of springs called, and where can I purchase varying lengths of them? Googleing various searches turned up nothing. These are pretty much essential to this project, since the joints need spring tension and the ability to twist. Thanks for any insight you guys can give.

I wasn't finding much by looking for that, mostly just tapered springs with the end loop bent upward. These wouldn't work as the ends can't freely rotate. I drew up >pic related to better explain how the springs worked, but before I could post it, I found a website that mentioned something about a swivel hook end. These turned out to be what I was looking for, swivel hook extension springs.

Thanks a ton for your help, I would never have found them without it. Cheers.

Sup /diy/,
I'm having trouble designing a strong enough handle for the wooden shield in the picture. I've looked at lots of shield handle designs, but I'm unsure if most of them could strap a 20 pound shield to my arm without breaking. Any ideas? Wood is 3/4" poplar.

Also post your swords, shields, polearms, bows, armor, etc. I wanna see em.

Wow, do you even know what you actually made there? Its a pavise and its not for wearing... It would be set up by an archer to provide cover. I would love to see you try fighting hand to hand with it though, you would get rekt. If you insist, make a rigid d-shaped handle to grip and a thick strap to put your arm through. I think that would be your best bet. Have fun with getting flanked constantly and not being able to do shit about it. If you wanted a high coverage melee shield you should look into Roman designs...
>>
>>996556
Leather strap affixed to the shield with bolts and washers. Cut out pieces of leather the size of the washers to reinforce the holes.
>>
>>996556
Biggest shield I can think of which was around 20lb was the larger Roman Scutum the legionnaires used
Basically a handle behind the boss and a few straps for slinging it

I'm not sure what your plans are but I would never feel comfortable pressurizing it again.

your probably going to want to scrub it with steel wool or emery cloth and light oil before you prime and paint it if you just want a show and tell piece.

The plan is to have it in my boat/car/bicycle/room/whatever. I think its unused but is it possible to refill it (do people sell that stuff)?

I think anon was getting at is the tank or valve may fail from corrosion. It's a cool wall decoration, but for dependable fire safety, buy a new one. Often found at hardware stores.

So I had a hail storm blow through about a month ago and did some damage around the place. My AC unit got pretty beat up, granted some of these are probably from rocks in the past.

I started by removing the protective wire cover. A few bolts here and there and she popped right off. Make sure you turn off the breaker to the unit before you start, electricity is nothing to take a chance with.

Here's a close up of what we need to fix. Golf ball sized hail is a bitch. This isn't the newest unit so I'm sure some of these can be attributed to rocks from a mower over the years, etc. Either way the hail storm was a good motivation to get it fixed. Note the fin is actually broken so we're not going to be able to get it perfect. But we can make it much better than it was.

I'm going to build my own large format digital camera. It will operate much like a pinhole camera.
But instead of analog film I'm going to use digital light sensors. To push down the price the sensors will be placed in a line, and then the line will be lowered step by step to take the picture in segments. Like a scanner.
And instead of a pinhole I'm going to use a lens, for shallow depth of field and more light.

The problem is resolution. To get as many megapixels as possible I need very small lightsensors and a very large projection.
The smallest sensors I've found are ~4 millimeters in diameter. If I want 1 megapixel with those the projection needs to be 4 meters wide. And that's not good.
So what I'm asking is where do I get very small sensors and very big lenses?

If you got any other solutions or ideas feel free to share.

wow, that seems really cool project, I got something similiar in mind a few months ago, really interested, will follow.

as for ideas, I would suggest making a tiny holes for each and every sensor or try to come up with a software solution later in the process ?
>>
>as many megapixels
Sorry, your fundamental understanding of "many megapixels" is too limited for this topic. You're better off getting a large piece of photo emulsion paper, and scanning them. By the time you get as many photosensors as you'd need, you'd be better off buying a medium format like the Pentax 645D.
>>
>>994810
Sorry that probably came off as a little blunt. I'm saving you from heartache of a project you could invest $1,000+ in to get mediocre results. Source: I've tried something very similar in astrophotography, and ended up with a 0.05MP image with ~$500 invested by the school in CCD light sensors.

Are people these days growing up being unable to do the most simple diy tasks?

From when I was little, I always tried to diy. I used all sorts of tools, even circular saws while still being in elementary school. Later I learned to weld, do electrical stuff, laying bricks and tiles, interior work, did roofs, insulation and piping, inserted doors and windows. I can pretty much build a house with my own hands.

But when I ask the younger generation, people seem to be total failures and want to call someone even for the most simple problems. Connecting a wall outlet? "I'm not touching that! I need an electrician!"

Are we heading for a future where people cannot hammer in a simple nail anymore?

Wats a hammer?
>>
lot of it maybe due to, the young 'uns (in large parts of Europe anyway) being no longer able to afford purchase cheap starter/fixer upper flat/house/shed/hovel - its all rentals, and that seems to be increasingly 'dont touch anything! - if its bust, call the Landlord!'

I mostly rented privately, and fixed shit when needed myself - but I always rented the kind of places that needed fixing, from the kind of landlords who would tell you in no uncertain terms to fuck off, you asked them to raise a finger. Dunno where the next generation(s) are s'posed to learn to fix anything, when they basically never need to nor get the chance, and even on here, they get advised not to touch shit and call the Landlord, or else get lawyered. As said, no skillz regrettable but maybe not entirely their fault, IMO.
>>
If it would not be tragic it would be funny that politicians make laws where you are almost in jail for diy, and where you get raided for ordering chemicals, but at the same time want young people to grow up with curiosity and learn from technical hobbies.

I want to surprise one of my friends with a homemade pipe. I'm considering concrete as a material. Does anyone have any experiences or thoughts on that?
>tl;dr is it possible to make a concrete weedpipe?
44 posts and 8 images submitted.
>>
>>991919
Yes it's possible. I don't know anything about pipes, but I think you'd want to start by making a "mold" of the inside of the pipe, and then form the concrete around that. You'd make the concrete into the approximate shape and then sand and polish it to the desired smoothness
>>
>>991924
Also, use small aggregate, or even just use mortar, ie sand is the only aggregate
>>
>>991924
sanding is no option, the mix I use is hard like glass when completely dry
my biggest concern is that it may contain some nasty chemicals
