Okay /diy/, longtime reader, first time poster. First of all, forgive my non-standard MS Paint wiring diagram. I've been Googling my ass off to learn about how to make circuits, and I feel like I've learned just enough to get myself hurt or damage my car, so I'm coming to you to check my work and tell me how wrong I am.

I want to add ambient footwell lighting to my car. I have four LED strips that I will wire in parallel. Each has 15 LEDs, for a total of 60--I'm not sure if they're 5050 or 3528, but the difference shouldn't be important. At the most, if they're 5050, each should want about 0.24 watts of power, so at most, my circuit will be drawing 14.4 watts, and for a car where everything is 12V, that's a current of just 1.2 amps, which the circuit I'm borrowing can handle.

I'm tapping into an unused accessory socket in the car that's connected to the dome light. One end is a hot, constant 12V of juice, the other end runs to ground through a factory NC switch system. Door opens? Lights come on. All doors closed? Lights go out.

I could plug these in and be done, but I want to add a switch that will give my install an independent "On or Off or Door" choice that the dome light itself has, Middle position is off, or I can switch it down to be door-dependent, or i can switch it up to be constantly on.

But, at the same time, I want the lights to be as bright as possible when they're dependent on the door, and I want them to be dim when they're constantly on. That way, I can have them as nice, always-on ambient light while I'm actually driving.

By my very novice thinking, I can accomplish this with a DPDT switch, and a resistor of some kind bridging the positive wires between the input and the "on" output of the switch. From what I've read, that resistor has to be parallel to the LEDs, not in line with the LEDs, which is why I've got it diagrammed as such.

Can this work as pictured? What, if anything, do I have wrong?

In case the wiring diagram doesn't make it clear, I'm accomplishing the "always on" by running the negative side of the switch's "On" output straight to ground, bypassing the factory dome switch. When I do this, if I want the lights dimmer, I know I need to give them less current, so what kind of resistor do I need to put in to accomplish this? I figured a 10 Ohm resistor would add 10 Ohms of resistance, effectively doubling the resistance of the circuit by my figuring, and therefore making the lights half as bright.

I know only enough to know I'm probably wrong about this.

I'll be bumping with cute animals and additional questions. Stuff like: Is parallel the way to go for connecting the strips together? I've heard LEDs actually cause a voltage drop, so I figured wiring them in series would make them progressively dimmer and not matching.

I'll also add that I have a multimeter, and only a very rudimentary knowledge of how to use it.

i cant says YES or NO coz the switch is a mystery. you need to redraw it with a standard notation so we can tell what connects to what inside the switch. use either the left or right representation in the pic provided. personally i prefer the right coz you can follow the current flow, instead of it being a black box.

Any tips on growing produce such as potatoes?

Rich soil with good drainage, and you need potatoes to start potatoes.
>>
>>1004472
You can grow stuff in bags if you don't want to dig up your yard or you don't have much in the way of open ground, they are a kind of plastic fabric and with care can be reused for a few years, you can let your seed potatoes "bud" on a window sill and then plant them out, compost mixed with some well rotted manure (60 - 40 mix) will give them plenty of food to get on with, plant the seed potatoes in a half full bag then as the plants grow almost cover them over (leave a few leaves poking out) to force them to grow more/higher, this will increase your yield significantly.

When you harvest the potatoes don't throw away your soil, tip it out into a big pile (if you have the room) and cover to stop weeds and mix in more well rotted manure the following year and use again.

If you do not have a greenhouse to start plants off then you can use your window sills or build a cold frame, these are very easy to make and there are a ton of videos showing you how.

I grow lots of tomatoes and chilli plants and sell them in front of my house with an honesty box and donate the money to Hope For Heroes, the stall in the picture isn't mine but mine is pretty similar.

dig a little hole and put potato in it.

when the plant appears and grows some, pile good loose soil around the plant. leaving the top half the plant exposed. Keep repeating this every few days. Till your mound gets about a foot and half or two feet high.

when the plant above ground dies. tear the mound apart to get potatoes.

Parts Organizer Advice Needed!!

What do you use for parts storage/organization?

I'm about to be making my first massive order of electronic components, which will likely come out to around 200 different types of components in various quantities.

Considering buying pic-related parts organizer. I've got a full-size Husky toolbox that could do the trick, if I used organizers.

OR

Could it be easier and more cost-friendly to make my own pic-related type out of pine or oak with glass insert style panes?

Just needing some advice, as the cost of all parts I'm ordering is steep as-is, and I'm really not trying to spend anymore than I already am.

Thoughts?

I use those for my components. I dont know how much shit you ordered but definitely buy enough cabinets so you can keep your different values organized. Keeping your resistors and shit organized takes up a lot of drawers. You're also gonna want something bigger to store whatever big shit you accumulate, batteries, power supplies, cords, wire, etc. Save the husky box for tools. A parts organizer like the one in your pic is like fifteen bucks at harbor freight so I don't think you're gonna get a better solution for less.
>>
>>1004360

Whatever organizer you get, ensure that the "ceilings" of the drawers is solid. That is to say, completely enclosed. I like the organizers I have on the basis that they were cheap (like $20 for 64 2x5.5" drawers), but the cutouts in the drawer slots that were put in to save material means that things can get caught/stuck after you close the drawer. Not to mention the fact that if I ever knock the thing over (god forbid), parts are still going to be all over the place even if every drawer magically stays completely shut.

I'm inclined to say you should make your own if you have the capability. Partly because it should be cheaper than a decent, off-the-shelf organizer cabinet, and partly because you can ensure it's exactly what you need.

For most through-hole components, I use these:
http://www.mcmaster.com/#4629T34
For surface mount, the compartments are way too big. I use these instead:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/SMD-resistor-capacitor-storage-box-Organizer-0603-0402-144-compartments-w-lids-l-/281543611085
...and since I have like 100 of each, I keep them neatly store in map cabinets, aka 'flat files':

Looking for a good socket set that i can keep for years. My boss has a Craftsman set he got at Orchard Supply for about 130 iirc and it seems pretty solid.
I dont know anything about what names are quality but i know i wont be buying some snap-on 400 dollar set.
Any suggestions?

You didnt specify a price range, or what kind of sockets you are looking for.
All you have said is that you want good sockets that will last, and then contradicted that statement by saying that a chinese craftsman set seemed solid.

So my laptop doesn't come with a CD drive, but it has this placeholder thing, and a cd-tray sized hole in the side. The placeholder screws came out so I can put whatever I want in there. There's access to some sort of SATA connection inside.
I'm looking for ideas for what to put inside! I don't do enough drugs to make it a stash though.

What I came up with so far:
-a physical calculator
-offline password keeper (push a physical button and it writes it out)
-spare beef jerky stash

Any other ideas? I want to do something interesting

Hey /diy/, quick question. My forklift at work, an electric Yale 4-wheel is compromised due to me. I yanked on the cable rather than the anderson connector to unplug the battery cable from the lift, and now the black cable is a little loose in the connector.

How fucked am I, and how can I fix it myself? I can see copper showing on the black cable now, I just want the damn thing reseated. Pls help

Connector looks exactly like pic related

You either:

A.) Pulled the cable out of the crimp. In that case, not really your fault; that should have been essentially impossible to do. Stuff it back in and crimp it better.

B.) Pulled the contact out of the housing. Again, not your fault if you were able to do it; Anderson plugs lock in once assembled and shouldn't be able to come loose without deliberate effort. See if the pawl that holds the contact in is okay and push it back in if it is.

C.) Pulled the insulation back on the cable. Yet again, shouldn't really have been possible unless it was cut too far back in the first place. Cover it with some suitable tape and it should be alright.
>>
>>1003076
thank you for your response. I was trying to push it back in before I closed the store, but I'm not sure if I accomplished anything. As far as I could tell, I couldn't at this point easily pull the cable or anything else from the connector. The black cable just jiggles a lot, and I can see copper which I don't like. Any tips on a fix?

1. number of layers i would need
2. if theres some other material it's made out of or if its just carbon fiber
3,advantages/disadvantages of the different mounting options
4. dimensions

23-33 dollar experiment OP. Amazon has everything you'd need. Hell, you cpuld probably source copper for free. Zinc may be harder.

>tl;dr: my toilet has this connection that I don't understand and I would like to know more

Good morning /diy/

Is anyone here experienced with toilets? Replacing them more than using them, specifically.

I'm supposed to replace the toilet in our house soon - it works fine, it's just old and we're gradually upgrading and modernising the place.

I've replaced toilets before but I've always encountered a flange that's flush with the floor, and used two long bolts to fasten the new toilet.

The current toilet appears to attach a bit differently. I'm not familiar with this style and don't know if I'm going to run into problems.

I am handy enough to do whatever work is required and prefer not to call in a plumber to do something this small.

Pic related - the connection between the toilet and the floor.

Cheers,

That is odd. What country, how old, what style toilet? More pics would be great.
>>

Australia. The house was built in the mid 1980s so I assume the toilet is original.

The brand on the bowl is "Fowler Ware" for what it's worth.
