Found a cordless vacuum cleaner. Runs on li ion batteries. The problem is it didn't come with a charger. I was wondering if I could use a 13.6V 1800mA adapter for my 13.5V 500mA appliance.

I've noticed li ion batteries need to be charged by a specialized circuit to avoid overcharging and potential explosion/housefire. There is one PCB in the vacuum cleaner. Does any one recognize it as a charger circuit?

That's an AC adapter. You need 13.5V DC.

Thanks, I didn't see that. Are the batteries protected by the circuit?

What welder do you have? What output? If you are absolute newby harbor freight sells a learn to weld book that will give basics
>>

1/16 electrode 308 alloy run at about 80 amps down hand. Thin stuff like that it's perfectly fine to go down on. Keep your trav l rate quick and just try to fuse it together with very little filler

I have access to a bunch of Lincoln Electric, and even one of those 'reality welders' so mig, tig, gmaw, arc, oxy/a...standard stuff

found some sticks labeled 'stainless steel' in an old cabinet and that how this all got started.

Can we have a tiny home and cheap living thread?

I don't know where else to ask this. I am a young guy, in college right now. I was wondering, what would the downside be to buying some land for 10 to 20k, and paying for one of these to put down? I don't know anything about /diy/ except how to paint and drywall, of which I've done both. Is there any reason not to buy a prefab or tiny home?

Would they have poorer insulation? Would it be more difficult to get such a thing to be considered a permanent structure so that it could be seen as a legitimate home with an address?

They really are just overpriced travel trailer.

The point of the tiny home is to /diy/ it.
>>
>>1065129
>Would it be more difficult to get such a thing to be considered a permanent structure so that it could be seen as a legitimate home with an address?
in many places, tiny houses wont pass inspections, and wont be allowed to connect to utilities. Is your plan to be off grid on your own property?

>Would they have poorer insulation?
yes, they are made to be lightweight not energy efficient.
>>
>>1065147
>in many places, tiny houses wont pass inspections, and wont be allowed to connect to utilities

This is not quite true.
In a major city you may have zoning laws, but anywhere you can buy acreage will have much different regulations.

>Would they have poorer insulation?
Typically tiny houses are made with 2x4 studs just like a normal house and they use the same insulation.

There is no difference between them and a travel trailer or a mobile home as far as the law is concerned.

OP.
Most important part is having water.
If you can't tap into city supply, be sure you can drill a well.
A friend bought property outside of las Vegas. Well company said they "might" hit water at 2,500 feet, but there was no guarantee. That would be $20,000+ for nothing.

On my property:
>15 acres- $22,000
>Electricity- $900 (I was close to the main line, I could have just as easily bought another piece of land and had to spend $15,000- I got lucky).
>Septic- $2,500
>Well- $4,000
>Cabin- $9,000 for the shell, + $5,000-ish to finish it with wiring, plumbing, insulation, drywall. It would have been cheaper to build my own cabin but this was much, much easier.

>>
Yeah I have the scary chinese one, had it for months but I haven't been organised to get the local fablab help me calibrate it. Also there's the important issue of extraction which I haven't solved myself yet due to technical ignorance.

How is the lasersaur? Does eevrything you want it too?
>>
I use an Epilog Helix 24 30 watt up at the hackerspace. A BOSS 150w is on the way, I think a 4'x2' bed, not sure. The space is in the middle of expanding and I think they deferred delivery until the laser's new home is cleaned out.

I personally use the Epilog drivers and print from Autocad > pdf > Adobe Reader > laser. Sadly, printing from autocad is not a plug and play process. Everyone else uses illustrator. I use ACAD because I'm an engineer and I already use it 9 hours a day.

Hey /diy/,
I'm going to convert half of my garage to a room. Will the cinder block walls provide enough insulation in FL with an average exterior temp of 85-87 for a window AC unit to be set at, say, 78?

If not, are there any cheap ways to insulate these walls that won't add too much to thickness? The door and window already look silly.
14 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>1064950
Man, this really is a slow board. Some more details:
One wall is already insulated, one will be, and 2 walls are cinder. Exterior is just paint. Am open to having nonstandard wall material if needed, foam walls or whatever. Just hoping to hear from someone who has converted a cinderblock walled room to a livable space, how well it worked, what you liked/disliked, etc.
>>
How about... You make the wall into a hidden storage aswell. Make the wall a little thicker. Then you could drawers and your garden made right into the wall.
>>
It'll be fine. You might have to cover the 2 suicide vents if those are code where you live.

So I'm what you would call a weekend hobbyist. I'm pretty new to woodworking (1-2 years going) and I've decided to invest in a small table saw, keyword being small.

My "shop" is half of a one-car garage, so space efficiency is important.

My question is, is this Ryobi 15-Amp saw from Home Depot worth $130?
37 posts and 10 images submitted.
>>
Itll cut wood.
How accurately is another question.

I would check craigslist for a decent used saw.
All contractor saws are small, you may be able to snag a much better saw for the same price.
>>
>>1064927
Not unless it is someone elses money. Get a used old American made saw. They are heavy and often need some cleanup but the can be had super cheap sometimes and are bulletproof. Post your local Craig's LIst and I will have a look to see whats good within your budget.

First, a few questions:
Do you want one with a stand or can you build one yourself?
Do you have 220 volt power available?
What size blade are you looking for (8 inch, 9 inch, 10 inch)?
>>
>>1064927

Those plastic and aluminum saws are terrible, no matter who makes them. At best, you'd have to go into the $300+ models for something suitable for job site use, and, being made mostly for portability, they sacrifice a lot of the advantage a table saw offers in the first place.

For proper woodworking, find a deal on an actual table saw with a cast iron top. You will be served much better by one, and, unlike the cheap crap, it will hold its value fairly well.

Hey DIY

so basically I'm wondering if I wanted to, could I rescue Kee bird from the lake she's floating on in northern greenland?

I figure I could just use a tractor like this one, tie some ropes around the wings and tail and pull it to shore.

I asked reddit but I learned reddit gives shit engineering advice because everyone there has too many goddamned chromasones.

Basically, I just wanna go up as a one person team pull it out with a tractor and claim the wreck so I can air haul it out later.

Need to take down the parts of the old patio. This is how it looks like, I wonder what tools can I use to minimize chances of accidental destruction of load bearing structures inside? It looks as if this beam is embedded into the stucco and is somehow fastened to the frame. The beam that is partly down now was somehow nailed from inside the frame, I guess it was when the whole structure was being built. No idea about how the frame is constructed.

Ideas?

looking at the state of that wood it'll probably just come off with a crowbar and a bit of elbow greese
>>
>>1064306
That's just the worst part of it, others are not so flimsy. The more I look at it, the more I think that at least some chainsaw work will be required. I don't think a reciprocating saw would be of much use here, would it? Can you use a reciprocating saw to dig into structures, or it's only intended to cut something from the side?
>>
reciprocating saw aren't really designed for it, you'd probably damage the blade, a chainsaw or circular saw would work, cut it into the biggest chunks your able to lever off with the crowbar

What are some good ways to re-use empty bottles? I hate throwing the nice looking ones away and would rather give them a new life than trash them. Currently have pic related in my cupboard and want to do something with the bottle when It's empty.

you can make them into lamps if you want

either with bulbs or fairy lights inside and frosted outsides.

you can also make them into interesting glasses by removing the top (google it).
>>

Depends. if you take a bottle to a gathering of sorts then take a few photos and save the bottle. when it's finished dry the bottle out and stuff the printed photos into the bottle and label/date it. Makes for a nice sentimental collection and definitely impresses people. I had about 8 bottles saved from uni overseas but couldn't bring them back with me and didn't have the heart to start it again.

Google tiki torches are from 40oz bottles pretty good gifts of you live where mosquitos are bad. Cheap to make and look good.. I use corona familiar bottles but any could work.

Modding cars for a profit. I know this is a fairly niche idea but its also kind of what I'm counting on. I have somewhat of a fetish for the crown vics. I don't know why exactly. Vut it is my favorite and then some. I'll have some cash to play with soon but i am trying to find ways to fund my hobby if i can. Time is a non issue as i have slow days at work and several hour breaks sometimes. I have been studying the swaps and im not exactly sure wich way i will go, but i want to put the 4.6 liter v8 from a crown vic and the automatic tranny into Ford Rangers and Mazda pickups. I know these are year sepecific and will figure out the details latter. I have buddy's that paint really well and a world vlass proffessional pinstripe artist is a childhood friend. Assuming i can so the conversion "right" and do it consistantly whike producing an aesthetivally pleasing vehilce would anyone buy this?

Depending on the years. The picups came, some with a 4 cylinder at 98hp. I had one. They solid but gutless af. The vrown vics have 215 or so to 250. So, doing this swap would make for a 250% power increase.

There are several people who have done this and im not affraid to try it myself.

I can get a truck body with a clear title for $500, and a sound running surplus crown vic for $1,000 all day long. Better if i shop around some. Hauking it isnt a problem and neither are tools, or a lift.

Assuming misc parts and paint cost another $1,500. That would put the build at $3,000 for a freshened up and newly painted ranger with 250hp ideally. Would anyone pay 3k? Or maybe more?

Pic somewhat related. Maybe not quite that quality but close. Source good looking wheels and tires off craigslist. Amazon hid headlights and try to make it look as good as i can on a budget.

There is money in buying crashed auction cars, fixing and flipping. But with your idea intensive mods and motor swapping your dollar earned per hour will probably be below minimum wage. Some of those projects can consume 100 hours if it involves chasing wiring harness on top of motor swapping.

I see. Good lord the spelling. I fumbled it and sent before proofing and spellcheck is mia. I've considered getting a dealers liscense and looked into the laws a little. My cousin used to go to dealer only auctions with a dually and i would go in case he bought to many cars to drive home. Working on stuff at work is somewhat of a bitch because i have infrequent stopping points and no shop. But the weather should be nice soon and if i need i can drag stuff to my dads and work inside. Most of the fab work seems to be on the heater core box, radiator, and there is some wiring to do but apparently ford color codes quite well. I am nervous about it but i am oretty good with wiring. Assuming i can get the pinouts right i will color code as factory as possible and make notes of soecial changes for myself and future owners. Headers do seem to be a bit of a bitch but i'm not affraid. For the first swap being a lerning exoerience and new toy im going to tag it and have some fun. Will also get a feel for it and be able to deal with any big problems.

Sad if i make less then minimum wage, but if i do most of it at work, then work is paying an hourly wage and i'm not watching tv so it's win win. I started lifting today again and i didnt last nearly as long as i thought i would. I cant seem to find any other profitable hobby that i enjoy. And im hoping if i dont hate this by the 3rd or 4th swap it should be pretty much 2nd nature. I'm buying a 4x4 ford pickup and a lift kit next year to make a 4x4 vic as a daily driver. That will probably take some work and profanity, but with that and the unlimited bodies i would have any profit or breaking even is fine. If it starts going the other way i guess ill figure out something else. It just seems like the time to buy before they are all crushed and gone.

We do lots of custom cars in our shop. Street Rods, muscle cars , race cars ect.
To reiterate what the other guy said as a rule of thumb, the longer a car stays in the shop, the less money you make.
Putting in a set of headers, exhaust, maybe a carb and manifold. Great bang it out and take the cash.
Tubbing a rear or putting a mustang II front end on a street rod. Way more time involved and if you really charged the shop hourly rate people would be calling you a crook all over town.
Anything requiring custom fabrication takes all kinds of time and customer's don't realy get that. They'll pay big $ for some name brand part, and think you're going to spend 3 days machining any welding for $200.
Another tip, people who set up in a town with money in it always do better than some guy in east bumfuck cowtown.
