Hi /diy/,
I have pic related, it's a cheap FPGA development board :
https://www.amazon.com/RioRand-EP2C5T144-Altera-Cyclone-Development/dp/B00LEMKR92
It has a max frequency of 300MHz, a few dozen pins and no external RAM.
Any ideas for a little project using this thing ?

I was thinking about buying that same board, but my country's amazon site only shows products from shady chinese resellers, what is the chance I'm getting a counterfeit product?
Also, interesting resources:
https://opencores.org/
http://www.fpga4fun.com/
>>1139617
Ebay has a lot of them, but it's mainly from china or US, like this one :
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-ALTERA-FPGA-Cyslonell-EP2C5T144-Minimum-System-Learning-Development-Board/272513170009?_trksid=p2047675.c100009.m1982&_trkparms=aid%3D888007%26algo%3DDISC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D41396%26meid%3D12657bb345354a84b96c91a6484dda73%26pid%3D100009%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D1%26sd%3D291993599545
The board itself is not an altera product so as long as the chip is the correct and the board has a JTAG connector, it should be good.

Do you mind giving me your opinion on this house project? Thanks
>>1138866
Bedroom length to width ratio is too far from 1:1, make it closer.
>>1138866
can we get some dimensions? what are you doing here, moving walls, or building a house from scratch? what?
>>1138866
Very nice house, well done.
10/10
Now go clean your room Jimmy.
Anyone here into sewing? It's fucking amazing how much stronger a hand threaded stitch is compared to a machine's.
Also, pro-tip, heavy duty nylon upholstery thread (kind you can get at walmart) is so strong that you cannot tear it apart with your hands, honest! I used it to repair my leather boots and they are never going to bust at that seem again.
Also, leather requires special needles (also sold at walmart).
Anyone do any sewing lately? Just repair stitched a beloved pair of jeans, may have extended its life for a couple more years.
I don't sew but you sure do make it sound appealing! Maybe post a few of the things you've sewn ( Is that how you say it?) ?
>>1137271
I'm still pretty amateur, but I repaired this leather jacket a while ago--I could probably do a much better job of it now, but yeah, I can wear the jacket now when I want to do chores or do dirty work.
I've made denim phone cases for every phone I've owned...keeps screens looking perfect
made a denim mace holster as well, but I'll probably have to re-do it in leather
If I hire a tradesman to do something at my house, is it considered rude to "watch him"---I want to learn something!
They are used to it.
Tell them that's why your watching, offer copious amounts of coffee/tea and they shouldn't mind.
>>1137251
to a certain degree
I'm more prone to screwing up whenever I have someone hovering over my shoulder
as long as you're polite about it, there shouldn't be any harm in asking specific, relevant questions
of course if you're like "tell me how to do X so I don't have to spend money to call you next time". don't expect a warm response
How to make a house all by yourself? Is this even possible.
>>1128119
google before you ask a stupid question like that, delete this thread
I'd start with the walls before the roof.
>>1128125
yeah, you are definitely gonna want some walls and a roof. like, 4 walls minimum.
hey diy need some help. I want to buy a nice hex die battery lug crimper. Something that can do thick wall 4/0 connections. Has anyone ever done this? I see a few nice one on amazon, usually 100 bucks and up for something that is not questionable. Some of the cheaper ones have good reviews but are in metric. I want a 100% awesome crimp. Its for a large 12 volt battery bank. Something that will see 120+ amps. Also tool general. A discussion of quality, price and drawbacks.
>>1144797
we have electric and manual hand held crimpers for 0 gauge both work well manual you crimp both sides no idea what either cost
http://kk.org/cooltools/swaging-tool/
I've got two of these - one small and one large.
I use them on battery lugs as well as wire rope.
>>1144814
Interesting, but can it handle 4/0 copper cable?
Hey guys, I got a Technostar TT2001R, it's some shitty record player for digitlizing. I would love to use it on my stereo, but it has no aux output or anything like that, only inbuilt shitty speakers. Is there any way I can /diy/ it into a real record player?
>>1144531
Cut off speakers
Rewire rcas onto them
>>1144548
Theres no headhpone output, just RCA Aux in. Ill try that
just bought one of these cheapy portable sandblasters on ebay and I'm planning on sandblasting bike frames and such in a little tent in my workshop carpark over the weekend when no one is around.
>are these actually any good or have I been cucked out of $300
>>1144464
>Australian
They are the IRL shitpost masters m8, take a wild guess.
Discrimination
They’re not bad but you could have saved $100ish by buying from somewhere like Sydney Tools. Check out some of the Youtube videos on ways to improve the grit feed so you don't get clogging.
If you are using sand, the time taken to sieve it is well worth the time it saves by not clogging up; both the sand and the air from the compressor should be dry, as damp sand is the next biggest cause of clogging.
Ideally, you'll want to run it from a decent compressor with a free air delivery of 8cfm/200 l/m as a minimum starting point, so if your current air compressor weighs less than about 40kg, or it has to run continuously to keep up (duty cycle on compressors is around 70%) it's not big enough.
Soda blasting is fun, but I haven't found anywhere that sells sodium bicarbonate for blasting at decent prices, so I buy the stuff for swimming pools instead, but check the price against buying it from the baking isle of the supermarket. I use a small handheld gun for soda blasting; avoid the temptation to add some citric acid to it as that's just too much like blasting with lemon sherbet mix.
A decent respirator is a must, as is clothing without too many openings as the grit gets everywhere.
i am a total idiot with no idea what i'm doing.
when i signed my lease, there was an adendum that our building has not been tested for asbestos.
if i just want to drill a couple of holes to hang curtains, should i take in a sample to a lab to test for it?
i've researched the topic a bit and found an accredited lab that quoted me a $50/sample (+ $25 processing) fee, which definitely seems steep.
pic related is where i want to put a few holes. once again, i realize that i'm an idiot asking dumb questions. please help me be less of one.
>>1144203
>if i just want to drill a couple of holes to hang curtains, should i take in a sample to a lab to test for it?
Asbestos generally isn't used in drywall or wall insulation. It might be in the ceiling if you have popcorn ceilings or some kind of paneled ceiling. It is also found in pipe insulation, HVAC ductwork insulation, attic space insulation (Xonolite), and laminate floor tiles.
Either way, drilling a half dozen small holes is not going to release enough asbestos to cause harm.
How old is the house? If it was built after 1980 is probably has zero asbestos in it. If it is older than that the odds go up the older it is.
How old is property?
That's a standard clause, saying it hasn't been tested for asbestos. Primarily when there's 99.9% the only asbestos in the place is in the chinese furniture you bring in to the place.
Just like everything causes cancer in california. Instead of going through the list of materials for every product, they just put the disclaimer on everything, it's cheaper and no one cares about the warning anyway.
Don't worry OP, you're probably not an idiot, you just don't know.
Asbestos is in drywall, typically less than 1%. Its more commonly found in drywall mud at about 1-4% rates, only before 1985. Everything else in this post is true >>1144218
Drilling holes? are you putting up curtains or picture frames? Just whack a nail in, take it out, then screw your screws in.
If you're overly worried about it, get a spray bottle of plain tap water, wet the materials, and spray the drywall as you go, or as the dust comes out. Sponge it up. Don't use a vacuum cleaner, it'll just get it back in the air faster unless its built for ultra fine particulate filtering.
Asbestos is only bad if you inhale it or eat it. Try to avoid that and you'll be fine. Same goes for lead paint (for old houses).
Is there a nontoxic superglue as strong as gorilla glue?
>>1144080
gorilla glue is a urethane. Superglue is cyanoacrylate. Both are reasonably nontoxic (in the cured state) what are you really asking?
>>1144081
It won't do anything If I inhale too much or accidentally swallowor inhale dried glue?
It once made me light headed from being around the fumes too much.
>>1144082
Oh, gorilla branded superglue. So a thickened CA.
The fumes are 'pre-cure' and they're an acute respiratory irritant. That's the worst of it. Eating chunks of dried superglue all day won't hurt you.
No idea why the fumes would make you lightheaded, they should make your nasal membranes and eyes hurt like hell. So, like, don't breathe it until it's set up.
How do I get molten plastic off my hob oven?
I dropped my plastic tray on the hob while it was hot and now have horrible plastic shit all over it.
>>1144015
Try lacquer thinner and a scrapper...
>>1144015
that's bad. maybe you can try to scrape it off with a tool like this: bestkitchentoolscenter.blogspot.nl/2013/06/kitchen-craft-stainless-steel-ceramic.html?m=1
don't go hard on the edges or you'll damage the hob.
>>1144015
Depending on the plastic, it's likely to dissolve in acetone.
My exhaust fan above the toilet would just hum and do nothing when i turned the light switch super annoying.
I want to clean all the pieces and grease the moving parts on the fan but im not sure if its the motor
Explain how it works like im an idiot cuz i would expect the motor to have wires attached to the source
motor shaft holds the fan blades, one drop of light mineral oil each into where the shaft goes into the motor case. Grab the shaft and move it up and down to get the oil slide into the (plain) bearing. Spin by hand and add more oil if it is still not spinning easily.
replace with new exhaust fan if shaft is still hard to rotate
Dammit sorry my stupid phone is posting these pictures facing the wrong way
Can someone explain to me why screwdriver sets always have handles with different thickness? Why don't they use standard for all sizes?
Bigger handle = more torque for bigger screws
Small handle = less torque for smaller screws
>>1143732
So you can tell what size they are without having too look at them. Stubby handled ones are the stubby ones.

Can any wise /diy/ers help me identify this?
It appears to be a two-part machine bolt that is designed to screw together. It's made from A2 stainless (both bolt heads are stamped as such) which suggests it's manufactured part rather than a modification. No witness marks or obvious post machining.
It's been running as a hinge inside needle roller bearings and would be a super useful thing to have access to for some of my other projects but I've never seen anything like it before. Any ideas?
>>1143702
It is kind of like a sex bolt. Picture related. That is probably not quite right, though. That thing is on another level.
it is a sex bolt but there doesn't seem to be much around like your pic.
pic related, best I could find https://www.fastenright.com/general-fixings/low-profile-socket-sex-bolts/sb04
>>1143702
two large bolts, cut down and threaded on a lathe.
not an off-the-shelf part.
source: common sense.
Is there a way to test how much load/amps an outlet can take?
I suspect one of my 15amp breakers is being shared by another outlet or something else because it routinely trips with low usage.
First check which outlets are connected together by switching off the breaker.
>>1143664
take a multimeter and put it in amps mode and stick it in the socket it will tell you the max amperage the socket can provide
>>1143678
Skip this step or wear a face shield
