>In recent years, Marvel Comics has been suffering a bit of a talent drain. Some have been nabbed by DC Comics, such as Tom King, but that’s not been the rule. Instead it has been Image Comics that has provided a welcoming home for Rick Remender, Ed Brubaker, Sean Phillips, Matt Fraction, Kelly Sue DeConnick, Jamie McKelvie, Jonathan Hickman and more, while they’ve had to share the likes of Jeff Lemire, Jason Latour, Nick Spencer, Mark Millar, Warren Ellis and Kieron Gillen (a number of whom haven’t been interested in Marvel’s superhero books for a while now.)

How the FUCK has she of all characters become DC's flagship female protagonist? I've seen this development unfold over the years myself with my own two eyes, but I still can't make sense of it.

Shouldn't she be the mascot character for those TCC sluts or something, instead of a quirky protagonist being played totally straight? Yeah, she's suffered abuse in her origin (like literally EVERY OTHER major bat-villain), but the big difference with her- is that literally every bad thing that has ever happened to her has been her own fucking fault. Her whole motive for becoming a costumed villain, occasionally comparable to The Joker, has been "because she wants to".

25 years ago a bunch of Marvel artists left the Big Two and decided to form their company, with blackjack and hookers. This company would eventually become the closest to a third competitor for DC and Marvel (lol) and the best known creator-owned comic book company out there.

This week it's time to put the spotlight on the "second wave" series, those books that weren't created by the founders but still managed to be an important part of the company's history.
