Anyone here working for an HFT firm? If yes, what's your educational background? How much do you get paid? What's your day like?

so far every day has been different so it's difficult to say what my day is like. in general i'll monitor performance of what is currently trading and if something isn't working as well as we expected (in the short or long term) then i identify why and fix it

So I am about to inherit $200,000 and I'm getting a bit tired of college. I want to join the military as enlisted and maybe go to Officer Candidate School.

Is this a smart idea? I mean, I pretty much get all of my college loans paid for, can probably get the education that I desire (computer science) done in the military, and if anything ever fucks up I can just fall back on my military career.

What does /biz/ think about the military? Yes, I am a fuck up. And yes, I am not certain about my job outlook.

Get a bachelors first. That guarantees you arent a grunt in most (all?) Services. Also think abput the cost / benefit.

While your deployed you get compensated peanuts for essentially being on call 24/7.

So , you wont have a stable relaionship the whole time or weekends / nights to yourself. Assuming you have some semblance of self control (because the military is good at instilling that kind of shit) youre better off in the private sector from the getgo even including the GI benefits and even if you plan on saving all your money.

Why are people trading instead of investing into their own, proper business?

It doesn't make sense to me, the return on creating your own business is much, much higher.

it's less work and quite frankly and the majority of people arent creative enough to start their own business and dont want to hustle for it.
>>
If it was that easy.

By investing you are essentially paying someone to work for you and taking a small cut of the profits (if there are any) at the end. The distinct advantage to this compared to building your own business from the ground up is that because someone else is doing all the work you can keep your regular job/income. This way if the investment goes bad you have had and still have a steady source of income.

Sup /biz/

I graduated from a finance degree in June last year and got an offer soon after to work as an analyst at a bank. The only problem was that the contract doesn't start until a couple of weeks from now, so I've spent the last 7 months or so travelling and doing lots of different drugs. But mostly being a lazy shit.

I haven't even worked a full time job since before I started college so I'm a bit worried it'll take me a while to adjust.

Do you guys have any advice for things I can do to prepare myself?

Be worried, and you're half way there.

M-F just remember you are your bosses' bitch boi: no is not in your vocabulary. Don't use your company computer for anything besides company work and research. Your coworkers will all be very informal, but their jobs are already secured whereas yours is not.

Keep a regular sleep schedule i.e. go to sleep at 10 wake up at 6 every night.

After 6 months you can loosen up a little bit.
>>
>>1058144
This sounds like good advice, thanks. What about ways to get my brain back into action again? I haven't really had to use any serious cognitive power in a long time. Should I try puzzles and brain teasers and such?
>>
>>1058171
I'd just suggest reviewing anything job relevant. You aren't going to be given major responsibilities your first day on the job.

Being initially slow on the uptake can be played off as being new, and fresh out of school. In fact, lean on your coworkers a little bit to help show you the ropes, and then tell them you owe them one. This makes it seem like you look up to them and generates positive feelings. Make sure you don't take up more than a couple hours of their time per week, though, otherwise you will become a nuisance.

Hey /biz/,

I just rewatched the first season of The Office. In the last episode David's boss tells him that the board have decided to promote him ( at a majority of 5-2) to replace her. If he takes the job then his office will be shut down but if he rejects it his office will stay open and incorporate the Swindon branch.

It suddenly hit me how unfair this offer was to Brent. The boss woman had previously told him that the choice was up to her. Then to suddenly turn around and make it his choice. When he doesn't have all the facts, a personal connection to the people being fired and a vested interest in getting a promotion...

I know this is TV but has anyone experienced such scummy behaviour from the board whilst being middle management?

Alright /biz/ I'm sure this has been brought up a couple times before but I'm still not sure of any of the ways. So here's the question.

Could this analysis be right?

Could this combination of the US's debts and deficit combine to lead to a long slow decline over our adult lives leading to a total fucking wash out of investing in equities?

Is Warren Buffett's promised route to wealth about to fuck us over?

Are we about to be fucked over by the baby boomers not only on house prices, on college loans, on job prospects, but also now, as a final kiss goodbye, on destroying an entire lifetime's investments?

If so, where the fuck is there to go? What is going to happen?

What's stopping me from just hiring a foreign broker directly instead of paying out the ass in fees? Do I need citizenship or residency? An established line of credit for whatever reason? I don't have a broker here, so I have no idea what the requirements are generally, I'm just curious. Surely there must be a reason why people don't do that besides it being a bit of a hassle.

Easy jobs that pay well?

Sophomore college student majoring in Intl Biz. 10/hr at the hotel isn't cutting it. In Florida if relevant. Prefer white collar work to blue.

A beer delivery company is hiring that pays $20-30 an hour but the work seems extremely labor intensive. Still, I'm very tempted to apply.

Did I unknowingly post a meme thread?

Does biz need more info? I'm a lost and dumb college student with no idea what I want to do. Halp.
>>
I doubt you're going to get up to $20-30/hr without a degree, training, or relevant job experience anywhere. If the beer company really pays that you'd be nuts not to apply.

So I was stupid and even though I switched banks I did not close my account out.
About a month ago I was making a purchase with paypal and used said bank which was rejected and I was given a late draft fee. I spoke with a branch manager at my bank about this and she spoke with her manager or whatever but both came back stating that since it was not a bank error they cannot do anything about it.
I have a -98.00 balance in that account which will go to collections in a few weeks. What will really happen to that money once it goes to the collection agency, will they just harrass me, how will it affect my credit? Am I just better off paying the balance?
5 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>1056475
You're better off paying the balance. After a certain amount of time, debts will appear in your credit report. Late payments have a high impact, and can very negatively affect your credit for a long period of time.
>>
>>1056475
Did you seriously just ask if it's better to destroy your credit for 7 years over $98?
>>
>>1056485
I am rather ignorant to the world of credit and posted the amount to see if it was small enough not to matter. But the way you put it makes it more obvious to me.

So the russian rubble had a pretty rough year so far and has fallen through the floor. My question is, since this is mostly related with oil prices isn't the rubble bound to bounce up again? Could investing right now when it's cheap turn out into profit later? How much of a bad idea is that and what would be better alternatives for the time being?
12 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>1056004
Do you think oil will go back up soon, and that Russia will be a top producer?
>>
Not when they're printing the fuck out of that shit to deal with their massive government budget deficit...

(I am only assuming this is one of the ways they are dealing with falling commodity prices and their reliance on commodity export)
>>
>>1056004

I thought the same as you but in forex if you go short on the ruble you have a spread of 5000 pips so if you buy rubles at 85 for example, you are buying ruble at 84.5 more or less and you start the operation with a huge loss.

The ruble will gain strength definitely but how? 1 year, 3? you can assure that 85 or 90 rubles will be the ceiling of the currency? you have the money to hold that operation?
