What is a heroic/epic fantasy game with "gritty" combat
i know some people here think gritty is a buzzword so just replace it with difficult/lethal combat or other word of your liking

Whilst browsing that /pol/-tier cancer thread that's going on right now I thought of a question:
In tabletop RPGs do you play to self-insert or do exploratory play with your characters? In other words...
Do you tend to play a character as either a self-insert of yourself or a power fantasy (possibly also yourself) and use your character as an avatar to explore the imaginary world?
or
Do you tend to create characters different to yourself to try and explore what it would be like to be someone different to yourself?
Personally I am more the latter, using RPGs to try and get into the headspace of people and groups unlike myself to try and understand more what it is like to be them.
E.g. i've played women, trans, genderless AIs, myriads of human, inhuman, and alien races, facists, rebels, etc.
What do you do /tg/?

>Personally I am more the latter, using RPGs to try and get into the headspace of people and groups unlike myself to try and understand more what it is like to be them.
You sound like the kind of guy who likes to pretend he understands other people's issues, but it's mostly just you allowing yourself to exaggerate your own personal mythology and to cement it further in your own head.
>E.g. i've played women, trans, genderless AIs, myriads of human, inhuman, and alien races, facists, rebels, etc.
Well, that confirms it.

Well maybe pact is the wrong word, but I took it from the PHB. He borrows his power from him. Probably without Cthulhu actually being aware of it.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN TO ME RIGHT NOW WHY AM I WASTING MY HARD EARNED MONEY ON BUILDING FUCKING MODERN AND EDH DECKS WHEN I COULD JUST BE PLAYING XMAGE FOR FREE. ARE WE ALL GETTING SCAMMED WHAT IS THE GODDAMNED POINT WHY AM I EVEN PARTAKING IN SUCH AN EXPENSIVE ((((HOBBY))))???????
Beats me. Generally when I put money into a hobby it's to keep certain people out, but going by what I've seen in MTG I don't think it works there.
>>54382905
Back when I still played, it was because I actually enjoyed holding and handling the physical cards. I liked sleeving up my deck in high quality sleeves, shuffling the deck, laying the cards out on a table, physically building the deck with my hands, flipping through my cards. I started Magic nearly 20 years ago as a child, and physical cards were all that existed back then.

Having dozens of Dakkas on our tanks makes little sense because if you have enough room to mount so dang many dakkas then you'd also have had. enough room to mount a bigger main gun, (and it's almost always better to mount a bigger main gun.) furthermore we would be able to use the extra room to improve our turret traverse, treads or reload rate and you have a tank that's almost just as good engaging multiple targets and vastly better at dealing damage to the tougher enemies.
>We fight so many people at once that having so few guns wouldn't cut it ya git!
That still doesn't make a lot of sense though. If they are too tough for your boys to beat then having a bunch of small guns are going to be more ineffective. If your small guns work then something like canister shot from your big guns would be more effective at clearing out massed infantry than your small guns. Small guns are for infantry but not in clumped up in hordes, where the big gun would be just as good. Even then, it would make more sense to mount it as a secondary gun on the turret to save space.
Oi! You louzy git! I oughta knock yer gob wit' me bosspole. Moar dakka don't necc...nezza...need ta mean more as in numbas! It cud mean more as in bigga gunz!

Is it possible to play a vampire in a fantasy setting without being a huge edgelord?
There's a few problems with playing a vampire, especially in a neutral or good aligned party. For one, there's the issue of where the vampire PC is going to get blood from. Then there's the problem of forcing the rest of the party to travel at night so you don't burst into flames. You could go the Elder Scrolls route and allow vampires to go out during into sunlight a day or so after feeding, but that's still pretty limiting.
It's annoying since I've always been a fan of the classic style of vampire, and you don't get much chance to play as one in games specifically geared towards vampiric PCs. Anyway, general vampire mechanics or That Vampire Guy thread.
>>54375848
>Is it possible to play a vampire in a fantasy setting without being a huge edgelord?
Yes, but as you point out, there are other problems. The biggest one IMO is that you put other players in the position where, once their characters have discovered you're a vampire, they have to decide whether their characters would turn on you or not. Since players usually don't like killing other PCs because they don't want to upset anyone, you give them a tough choice.
>>54375929
That's true, although it kind've goes into the whole inherent alignment mess. Depends on whether vampires are considered inherently evil or not. Presumably a vampire PC would need to be approved of by the group so they'll at least know how their character would react before the game begins. Then again limiting other player's character options isn't good either.
>>54375848
If I were playing a vampire I'd go full ham edgelord, good guy or bad guy. Just seems like the most fun.
I've always wanted to play an Castlevania Alucard ripoff, but playing a vamp seems like a huge challenge mechanically, though, as well as character wise. Vampire PCs are going to be far stronger than most other PCs, and depending on where you're playing they have huge limitations the most obvious ones being sunlight and blood
Share stories of betraying the party.
I don't have much. Once I sold a guy health potions while he was dying.
Then there was the time I turned the party into team rocket members and got a bunch of children killed.
I think that's it.

>party forgived me because lol PC
>got into a spat with the DM about it and he said the dwarves were malnourished and emaciated or something and we just didnt notice it (despite the lord's daughter being described as healthy/muscular)
It made sense at the time, since the DM wasn't really giving us any clues as to how we were supposed to go back to "our timeline."
It was my first real campaign and mistakes were definitely made, though.
What do you think is the coolest form of undeath?
Lichdom
>>54369818
The sort where you die and in your final moments you shit yourself and a chaotic evil necromancer binds your soul to the stool that is now lodged in your bowels. You're essentially a zombie, but that floating turd is the animating and "thinking" force for the entire body, controlling itself like a puppet. If it ever falls out or is passed out through unnatural digestive processes, the "zombie" falls lifeless and the stool attempts to move around, but isn't very powerful.
Vampirism. All the benefits of eternal life while still enjoying the pleasures of flesh.
