Lichdom comes with a ton of drawbacks that would make normal functioning extremely complicated. A vampire only has to adjust to a new sleeping schedule, a lich has to somehow preserve his body and keep it in good repair, bend over backwards in order to create the illusion that he's speaking like a normal human, and somehow attenuate the soul-chilling aura of undeath and evil.

And in the end the vamp is going to have more wizard levels than you because of your LA.

Here's the sad truth regarding the undead, anon.
In any world where undeath exists, there's almost always an afterlife you could've gone to instead. And most of the time, for the good and righteous (and even for the neutral), that afterlife is much better than this world of strife and struggle.
If you fear your passing, and become an undead, you're going against the natural order and prolonging your rightful place in the peace of the afterlife. The only people who this wouldn't apply for are the evil, who fear death because they know their reward for their evil is suffering. Those people should be eliminated from this world.
And in worlds without undead, there's a decent chance there's just no afterlife either, so you're kinda boned either way.
So, in all, there's nothing "cool" about undeath. Unless you have a very good reason, when your time comes, accept your place at the side of your god, or wherever you believe you'll go.

(well, except where there's no afterlife, like real life, in which case hope like fuck that immortality gets discovered before you die)

Well, it's a bit weird to bring in fluff (lichdom's ritual requirements) and crunch (which is actually wrong, vampires get shafted harder) like that - because a Lich that has to worry about the ritual is a character in a book and not a game, and a Lich that has to worry about their LA is the puppet of a player and thus doesn't have to care much about the abstracted requirements.

But in DnD mechanics terms (the worst terms of them all), becoming a Vampire Lord actually *is* superior to being a Lich - and much less crippling to your sanity and manual dexterity than being a Demilich.

You get /four/ phylacteries, golems made of sand that'll never go rouge, buffed up salt mummies that mummify, a near insta' kill flesh-to-salt attack, Mother Fooken POCKET SAND OF DEATH, and a panic button that'll bring your other dry lich bros.
Your only real weakness, water, can be countered by your personal Heat Wave of the Century centered on you.

in a system I forgot the name of but wich is not a DnDlike, becoming a lich doubles your mana pool permanently (not a spell slot system).
However, undeads cannot gain levels anymore.
Vampires circumvent this with temporary level drain for each thrall they control.
There's also two lichification rituals one available as soon as level 5, but who would use that so soon?
Capstones were at level 25 IIRC

Anyway my favourite undeads are mummies. They're like liches but cooler, with their own organs as phylacteries and temples/tombs full of stone guardians and traps.

I recommend undeaded to everyone in this thread.

Three ideas off the top of my head for modern liches

>Immortality
The obvious one. Immortality is an enticing prospect to quite a few people, especially those that are better off in life. In a modern setting your looks can be at least somewhat be taken care off with advanced prosthetics, negating the most obvious downside somewhat.

Becoming a Lich is like a shortcut to a lot of power. Extreme cases of revenge or straight up hunger for power can lead to one not caring about the downsides of Lichdom.

I have a certain boner for the Giovanni family in Vampire, and I could see a similar group of people in a modern setting that treats Lichdom as an ascension for their most revered members. Being able to fall back on the knowledge of multiple ancestors that have lived for hundreds of years is a great advantage.

I'd like the Kuei-Jin from WoD more if they had more material and weren't an awful smattering of theme-park Asian culture. They're still (hilariously, now that I think about it) Chinaman's knockoff vampires. But they fit the bill of revenant monsters returned from hell for whatever purpose. They also fit both body and body-less undead, since most of them have bodies to interact with the mortal realm, but they're really just ghosts wearing a body, and can take over another if their body would be destroyed.
