/gd/ here I need your help /tg/:

I need to design a tabletop game from scratch, problem is it needs to be fast and not too balls to the wall to the guy losing to flip out.

Where I can star? Any good systems you could translate to a fun setting?

What's your genre? 'fast but not balls to the wall' is a pretty terrible starting criteria. Racing? Horror? Adventure? Fashion model runway?
>>
>>54920825

Well the main idea is to allow the players to learn something useful while having fun with the game.

I would like something with teamwork and limited resources so players can learn to make the best of any situation

>Well the main idea is to allow the players to learn something useful while having fun with the game.

What's the lesson? You'll probably have to shoot towards that.

Teamwork and limited resources probably means you want some sort of co-op vs. an AI/Card drawing spawning of something, unless you have a genre in mind. If you're not implicitly putting a threat against the players, you can easily end up prisoner's dilemma situations. Dickbags will cause it anyway.

Have you guys tried doing a tabletop via a chat program. No set time, players can respond ic with their phones/computer at their convenience. I've been thinking of doing this with a couple of friends using Traveller. I feel like a Cowboy Bebop style game would translate well to this style. Anyone have any suggestions or experience doing this?

I play a lot of games online, but honestly I feel like the 'post when you like'/play by email style doesn't really work a lot of the time.

It can very easily end up with one or two active people completely dominating it while someone else with less time to post or who doesn't check it as regularly just gets left behind and ends up lost and disengaged.
>>
>>54920613
On mobile so sorry for any typos

I mod a few people on discord with dark heresy 2e

Did both slow paced playby post with people of different tz AND a faster paced same tz one where we played like an hour.or two - people would pop in if they saw activity in the game chatroom, no premeditated time

I belI've you will find that slow pbp ultimately dies down due to the sheer crawl of the narestive

Combat lasts ten years

Do fast paced one with ppl of similar tz if you want to pbp
>>
>>54920613
I've done it a couple of times, It depends on the people involved. If one person gets lazy and slow with their posts it slows everything down for everyone and gets pretty frustrating.
I find having a rule like at least 1 post a day works pretty well.
One of my all time favourite games was played purely through a forum.

Why does GW always give eldar some cheesy spammy unit in every fucking edition.

For fuck sakes what in the hell were they thinking with this?

To sell miniatures, codexes and rulebooks. That is their prime motivation.

Release a broken unit and/or codex with some miniatures to go along with them - people need to buy those codexes and miniatures to stay competitive, or because they think the new stuff looks cool.

GW is a business, they need to make as much money as possible at all times. They stopped caring about the actual games long ago (mid 2000s?)
>>
>>54918722

So ill smite you and you just take 1-6 wounds no saves

Oh what do you know i got 6 hits

They are automatic

And basically auto wounds since strength 10

And you cant save it because ap -4

And cover is useless unless your armor save is 2

And then im just gonna keep flying over you and spam my sythes since my bs does not matter and i can pivot twice for no reason

Ya thats totally fair bud

Literally have them in that exact color, the d20 just keeps rolling forever.
>>
>>54916952
First, they're mostly too small. This is especially the case with the d6, which is hard to throw and read. Second, and more importantly, the d20 and d12 in particular are garbage. They roll too easily and will actually stop and roll backwards to favor certain numbers. All in all, they're a terrible waste of space, aside from the d4, but even though it's superior to the normal pyramidal d4, it's far inferior to a twelve-sided d4. Other than that, the d8 is probably the only passable one of the bunch, as both the d6 and d10 are far too tiny (and the d10 has the same problem as the d12 and d20, only to a lesser degree). A regular d8 is still superior though.
>>
>>54916952
d4 that actually rolls is the only good thing about them.

Still scouting for a good workable location for my game. Considering the local Denny's as a possibility - they probably won't mind us taking up one table for our game and ordering drinks and food if we're there on a Monday afternoon...

I'm looking forward the Steampunk genre in order to change a bit.

Strangely, I haven't found many Steampunk RPGs (only one actually) does /tg/ happen to know some cool ones ?

No generic system memes (Gurps/Fate/SW/Strike no shilling of these) I want a complete game with both fluff and crunch.

There really aren't many. The thing is, steampunk isn't really very popular. Nerds generally get infatuated with it for a time, and casuals find it an easy aesthetic to adopt because you can just throw some brass gears on the band of a tophat and say you're such a geek xD, but it's really not a strong genre with a lot of memorable media backing it up.

That's if you consider it really a genre at all, rather than just an aesthetic. Can you really point to ten iconic steampunk works and find a unifying set of themes to them? A single unifying theme? Class consciousness, anti-imperialist sentiments, deconstructing the social mores of the Victorian era, those were aspects of "The Difference Engine", but how about "Morlock Night" or the Myst games? It's really absurdly hard to definitively say something is really steampunk--which for purposes of this discussion, potentially knocks settings like Rippers or Deadlands out of the running and further limits the field.

So even though steampunk is well known enough to get mentioned on The Simpsons, it's actually a very small, unpopular idiom. That means that very few writers are willing or able to dedicate the work of making a new system to a steampunk RPG; most examples will be implementations of cross-genre systems, GURPS Steampunk, EABA's Verne, BRP's Clockwork and Chivalry, Etherscope, Dragonmech, and the original edition of Iron Kingdoms for D20. So you're definitely drawing from a limited pool with what you're asking.
>>
What the fuck is up with the aversion to generic games?

Especially for a "style over substance" genre like steampunk.

I think Blades in the Dark is sorta steampunkish?
>>
>>54915373
I've been reading Victoriana 3rd and 2nd edition books. It's not pure steampunk as it has magic along with the tech.

It's pretty good. You can play a game of virtual chess where you can conglomerate your pawns into a mecha-chessatron.

That being said, I never use it and tools like roll20 seem to be better for RPGs anyway.

Why don't we see homebrew spells often? They seem a lot harder to fuck up and easier to balance. I've had players ask me for a bunch of ridiculously convuluted races and classes and shit but not even one has been like "can I replace fireball with iceball" or something
7 posts and 1 images submitted.

Grouped moved onto M&M and Savage Worlds ages ago. Homebrewing spells comes part and parcel with those systems.
>>
>>54913977
Making simple switches to elemental type is one thing, but most players are really bad at guessing how much power a spell should have for its level. It's easy to say, yeah, iceball does 10d6 ice damage, but what level should a spell that allows the caster to hide in a pocket dimension with no chance of detection for a long period of time be? Back in a 3.5 game I had some guy try to make a spell like that second level, not understanding the impact it had on adventure structure.
>>
>>54914118
Make it so they make the spell desc and you determine the level of spell it is if it gets to that point

They're not. They're little brownish green people who live in caves and make travel dangerous for common folk. I have never felt the need to make them anything else.
>>
>>54913553
They're the dominant force in one of the fey courts, which has come to be known as the Goblin Market.

They originally spawned from a large rodent with mating habits reminiscent of the bower bird, except that the young are birthed and nursed in it, like a nest. Thrust between the material world and the dream-worlds of invention and inspiration, they developed into sapient, anthropic creatures with an urge to collect and acquire the finest goods and newest innovations.
