/tg/, I have a dilemma.
I really like BG. Love my Meren precon deck, first deck I ever made was a BG mishmash. I love graveyard mechanics, tokens, and things being complicated.

I'm trying to make a new deck, but I can't decide on which I want.

I thought of using Hapatra, vizier of Poisons so I could do -1/-1 shenanigans, because I felt like knowing where and when to place tokens made the deck more interactive with other players, rather than just making my own deck bigger and playing my own cards rather than against my opponents.

I also really like Sidisi, Brood tyrant, because I have access to blue and I can do shenannigans with what that entails (I want to make Prophet of Kruphix work), and I can use things like gitrog monster and ramunap excavator to play around with all the extra land I'll have in grave.

Ghave, Guru of Spores is appealing too, because white means more tokens and more counters, but I feel like that might just be "Make tokens, do smash" and not be as fun to play as or against.

Basically, I love Golgari but want to add something more to it to make it more interesting.

What do you suggest?
Other anons post deck ideas and we rate them.

With Sidisi and access to blue, I can afford to run discard mechanics and compensate with Damia, Sage of stone, or even run artifacts and use Glissa, the traitor to pull them to hand. Basically, she lets me turn my deck into my graveyard, which becomes a library that I can pluck what I want out of at any time. I'd get to use mechanics people don't usually see, like Emerge, and I can use cards like Meren of Clan Nel Toth to pull more resources out of the grave.
>>
>>54877912

And I suppose with a Sultai deck I could run the standard golgari Hapatra strategy in it so that I have the best of both worlds.

SurprisinglyGoodReboot/10

MadeWebbyAGenuinelyInterestingCharacter/10.

Seriously, they did a good job giving everyone interesting personalities. Donald is his charming self, the nephews have distinct personalities instead of feeling samey, Scrooge's relationship with his family will be an interesting point, and best of all, Webby is a likable, well-written character instead of being the Cutesy Pwecious Widdle Girl, without feeling too SJW.

I think the theme song would've been done better by a male voice, but that's just me.

Hey /tg/, some of my friends are interested in RPGs and I'd like to introduce them to the hobby with a small campaign, preferably in something not too complicated but also not braindead.

I'm considering just going with D&D 5e because it's simple to understand and overall well-structured for a new player (if a bit bland for me), but I'd like to have some more options in terms of mechanics and theme considering they have 0 RPG experience.

Are there any tips I should take in account when dealing with new players? I'm kind of new to GMing in general so I don't want to throw them off.

>but I'd like to have some more options in terms of mechanics and theme considering they have 0 RPG experience.

You want fewer options with beginners. D&D 5E is just fine for beginners. Later you can introduce them to Pathfinder, lol.
>>
>>54873990
What I mean by "some more options" is systems other than D&D 5e. I get that 5e is fine for starters, but maybe they want cyberpunk or superheroes and I'd like to have more than one system at hand.

I'm in a similar boat to yours. I'm looking into translating and adapting Dungeon World and see if they have interest in it.

Greetings detec/tg/uys,

I've been itching to run a full fledged mystery for my group and I was looking for advice.

Usually, I can add mystery by throwing out a vague clue and improvising with whatever direction the players go.
I can run adventure-tv-show level mysteries pretty easily.

But I wanted to run something with more substance, to actually challenge my players to solve an actual mystery.
Ideally, with the same characters and world they're playing in.
My questions are many, so I'll ask them in detail in the next post.
But since OPs with questions get replies:

>How do I ensure they're invested?
>Why are the PCS, and not the ones in charge, doing the investigating?
>How do I make the mystery good, interesting, challenging, but not too hard?
>How do I run a mystery investigation using characters and setting not intended for it, like D&D 2nd AD&D or a low powered D&D 3.x game?
>If I would be better off translating and transferring to another system for the mystery, which one?
>How do you run an investigation mystery in a setting with medium to high levels of magic?
>What kind of mystery to run? Murder mystery? Political assassination/attack? Catching a serial thief?
>How do keep them from guessing the answer immediately and what do you do if they do?
>How do keep them from never guessing the answer and what do you do if they do get stuck?

I know there's got to be games like this out there, but I thought I'd ask you fine gentlemen before searching beyond the classic murder mystery larp.

Also:
>Have any of you pulled off a reveal like pick related?
Any other great Mystery Storytimes are perfectly welcome too.

Detailed questions too long for OP:

>How do I ensure they're invested?
I'm big on always letting the pcs fuck off and do something else if they want.
Threatening NPC's doesn't always work.
The only way I can thing of is to pull the tired bit of accusing them for a crime that they must prove themselves innocent of or compelling them with a geas, which raises more questions like:
>"Why aren't the ones in charge (or forcing the PCs to investigate) doing the investigating?"

>How do I make the mystery good, interesting, challenging, but not too hard?
I might have to steal from a another source and file serial numbers off.
Which leads to...

>How do I run a mystery investigation using characters and setting not intended for it?
The setting is not-medieval fantasy, so let's say I'm running a fantasy game like D&D 2nd AD&D, or a low powered D&D 3.x game.
If I would be better off translating and transferring to another system for the mystery, which one?

>How do you run an investigation mystery in a setting with medium to high levels of magic?
Speak with dead is a definite factor and psychics of all kinds exist but wouldn't necessarily be a problem, I don't think.
But dealing with those kinds of powers is an interesting related question.

>What kind of mystery to run?
My instincts are either:
1. Convoluted murder mystery by a sneaky wizard covering their tracks with deception and subterfuge. (cheesy goodness)
2. Political assassination/attack with multiple victims with the motives and true target unknown. (My pick)
3. Reverse caper trying to catch a serial thief. (Easiest and least interesting, imo)

>How do keep them from guessing the answer immediately and what do you do if they do?

>How do keep them from never guessing the answer and what do you do if they do get stuck?

Thanks for reading and any help you can offer.

Read a bit.
Stumbled upon Gumshoe.
Anybody familiar with it?
Do you think it would work for what I'm intending?
>>
>>54874165
Gunshoe is both great and terrible. It does a goid job of teaching players to manage resources for role-playing benefit and not juat combat but it's almost too simple and turns players into having about 4 specific "keys" to just try in every lock until they find one that fits. It keeps the plot moving but if they are experienced roleplayers it is pretty constraining. It's like Call of Cthulhu with training wheels.

You can learn a bit about designing mysteries from the system though. Basically you work backward and create "links" between scenes by placing key clues to find and supplementary clues that point towards the key clue to help the players decide what to look into next.

Meh. For me, Poots comes off as really pretentious and unprofessional. A lot of people suck Poots dick for having "quality minis" but that's really more the work of the great sculptors and artists he commissions. Hell, almost anything with concept art by Lokman sells way better than those without

There are six places in games to make a campaign. Good campaigns should mix up to three.

The great city; where rival gangs conflict and everything can be found.

the technology hub, with odditties both in their inventions and in their trash.

the harsh land, that must be conquered or understood

the scenic town, that has something unique, but also a dark side. Its built around something.

the stop in the road; where many stories meet and everyone is up for something.

The deep unknown, where everything is dangerous, crazy and unmapped
Which one am I forgetting?

The magic wizard's tower, where mysteries are revealed and directions set.

>Why 3 and not 4 or 2?
>>
>>54873332
Well, you can mix them all in a long game, but for a common story pattern (call to adventure - tests - showdown) you don't really need more.

also, How could I forgot about the tower!
>>
>>54873242
I can think of several others, like:
>The long treaded path; tests of courage, rights of manhood, and trials pass through here

>The Moving City; Military encampments, nomadic tribes, etc.

>The Monument; Ruins, Ancient Cities, etc.

Those are just off the top of my head.

RPG games with a resource that builds up in combat?

Been playing some fighters, and was wondering if there was a decent game using something like a super meter system, in which performing small actions eventually gets you the resources needed for big ones.

CRPG's have Adrenline in Guild Wars 1 and one of Lisa's RPG power systems, so it's not like the concept can't be done.

I had such an idea, but I've never put it into effect. A character would enter a stance and gain momentum. Each stance would have an at - will power, a minor power that costs some momentum, and an 'ultimate' power called a Finale which burns all the momentum and ends the stance, requiring a minimum amount of momentum to use.
It could even work as a casting system, with magicians building up magical power before unleashing a fireball.
Switching between or ending a stance could cost some or all the momentum gathered, depending on how the stances are related. It would be a resource game based on now-or-later decisions.
Obviously, characters should have access to multiple stances, if not all at once.

http://valorousgames. com/

Valor RPG. Each round of combat all participants gain a point of Valor, though it can also be gained through heroic acts, character options that have you Start a combat scenario with additional valor points and probably a couple others I don't recall off the top of my head.

Techniques and abilities can be keyed so that you need to Have or Spend a certain number of valor points in order to reduce their standard resource (stamina) cost, and can also be used to add bonuses to offensive, defensive, and skill rolls, to recover stamina, maybe some HP but I'm not as sure of that.

from what I remember Iron Heroes had a system where you could gain tokens by doing various appropriate actions in combat and then spend them to get super attacks

Anyone here played it ?

I would love to GM or a play a game where the Last Emperor finally dies but the whole shtick with Ruin and the main characters isn't happening.

Instead the Empire degenerates into warring factions of former nobles and the PCs are either Skaa trying to survive or even pull of some revolutionary stuff or a group of Nobles or Obligatos trying to carve out their own Empire.
