I just want to let you all know that progress on the rulebook continues and I am on track for an initial public release for July 1, 2017.

Right now the rulebook is being reformatted from a Google Doc into a prim and proper PDF format. The process has provided me the opportunity to review the rules thus far and make edits where necessary.

To whet your appetite, here is a link to a preview of the first 12 pages of the newly-formatted rulebook for Avatar: The Second Age.

>Why use FFGSWRPG as a base?

I've played and enjoyed a lot of EotE, AoR, and F&D. I think that Fantasy Flight Game's narrative dice system lends itself very nicely to the Avatar universe due to the way the core mechanic tries to facilitate episodic, fast-paced adventures. FFG created the system to explore a vast universe which enables the same desire in players who want to explore the Avatar universe.

The core mechanic for Star Wars is the narrative dice which relies on a success/fail mechanic. You want to perform an action and you either succeed or you don't. The nuance is that sometimes you fail, either due to the environment or other narrative circumstances which can be quantified in negative modifier dice. Sometimes, even though you fail your action, you may still gain some sort of advantage and sometimes you succeed but with unintended negative consequences.

I think the combat system is what needed the most work to really emulate the fluid and often ad-hoc nature of the fights in the Avatar world. So when it comes to bending, entrenched techniques (like the water whip) are outlined as though they were Force techniques. This means you start with a basic technique but each technique can be upgraded along a tree to enhance the ability in ways to make it more powerful, potent, or to boost the form's utility (more on this in a later post).

So specific bending forms are handled by a Bending skill (itself reliant upon any of the character attributes depending on the nature of the ability) whereas generic one-off moves, like sliding across an ice path or using earthbending to enhance your ability to climb a steep cliff, are handled by a Bending Arts skill to represent the utilitarian nature of bending.

By separating certain techniques into outlined abilities (Bending) and free-form maneuvers (Bending Arts), I've provided players with definitive mechanics for combat as well as the narrative flexibility for improvisation.

Is there an RPG that actively supports players staying in character?

Every RPG I've played has devolved into a joke or players blatantly ignoring the RP aspect of the game.
37 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
>>53354282
There are some RPGs that net you XP for staying in character. I suggest you play one of these with a GM that doesn't skip that particular rule of XP rewards.
>>
That has very little to do with the system and everything to do with your group.

There are RPGs with mechanics that key off IC behaviour, but none of them work if people aren't willing to engage with them.
>>
>>53354282

The problem is your group. Some RPGs are definitely better at encouraging roleplay than others, but if the players are blatantly ignoring the RP aspect of the game, it doesn't matter what you do with that aspect. They're ignoring it.

I'm DM:ing my first ever 5e game in Dark Sun and everything has been going relatively good for the past 6 or so sessions with only minor hiccups, but lately I've just become so fed up with one of my players that it's actually putting me off DM:ing further.

The player in question is playing a warforged and he is just driving me up the walls with his rule bending and arguing on the sole principle that it "makes sense". At first I wasn't going to let him play a warforged to begin with since we're doing Dark Sun, but he kept on nagging and bitching and complaining, telling the other players how I'm such a bad DM for not letting him play it. And since the other players are friends of his (I'm the new one in the group), I eventually let him play it cause I didn't want to lose my gaming group.

During play he constantly argues over every little point in order for the situation to swing in his favor. A favorite of his is to pick up the entire party of 3 other dudes and sprint across the desert because "well I'm a warforged, I don't need to eat or drink and since I'm a robot I shouldn't tire either", completely removing any feeling or dread or danger when playing. And when I present him with the official warforged stats pointing out that a warforged *can* tire and that he lacks the strength to even pick up the rest of the party, he starts to just argue even further how he's a robot and it doesn't make sense for him to tire.

This is only a few of the fucking things he pulls in every session, I'm desperate at this point and need help on how to deal with this. I don't wanna leave the group because the other 3 guys are friendly and just fun to game with, but at the same time this asshole is just putting me off from ever DM:ing again.

If you have any stories of people like this, do share what they did and how you resolved it.

It depends on each chapter and their respective culture.
But as a rule of thumb, you have to understand that being a giant killing machine that is litteraly endoctrinated via hypnose and goes through torture to become that and THEN spending your whole life doing nothing but fighting and going to other places where you will fight might have to do with a wee bit of a social problem.
For all is flaws, ADB is, imo, the one that pictures Astartes the best, as the demigods that they should be. The fact that hr often used the 1st person helps a lot.
A formula from Grimalfus in Blood and Fire stuck with me: "We are not Man made weapon. We are weapon made Man."
But again it depends on each chapter and each individual. Chapters like the Salamanders, Lamenters or the Doom Eagles are very humane.
Their entire mentality is about being the most self-suffering fatalistic grim bastards possible, but all in the name of ensuring that mortal humans don't suffer like they do.

They all see themselves as being already dead and that suffering and pain is their lot in the universe and nothing will change that, so nothing can hold them back from fighting as hard as they can to protect the innocent and the faithful from feeling their suffering.

They're one of the only chapters that manages to be both very grimdark and very sympathetic about protecting regular humans, without those two sides of their mentality conflicting.

>All of creation suffers, young ones. Only in accepting our own mortality can we make a difference. Only in bearing the burden of our failures can we find the strength to go on. Only in detachment from glory, or honour, or jealousy... from life itself can we hope to spare others from grief.
>We are Doom Eagles. And we are dead already.
>>
>>53353636
Depends on the chapter. Space Wolves and Salamanders treat their crew and serfs like family (in the Salamanders' case they ARE family) and Ultramarines, Blood Angels and Lamenters take the "protector" part to heart. The Celestial Lions nearly got wiped out because they're trying to be decent.

/tg/, we're going to create a new setting, filled to the brim with 'original' fantasy races.

Here's how it works:
>in one short sentence, describe a new race or state something about an existing race
>'dice+2d6' goes in the option field

-Create a race-
>12+ : this is one of the ruling races, even revered as gods by others
>10-11 : this is one of the core races in, commonly found all over the place
>6-9 : this is a niche race, only found in specific locations
>2-5 : this race has almost gone extinct
>1- : there's no such thing

-State something about a race-
>10-12 : this is true
>7-9 : this might be true in some cases, but it's mostly stereotypes and old-wives-tales
>6- : this is false

Song of Swords could work, though you'd want to have the magic be essentially rulesless as only big NPC's and villains have it by the description you've given

>>53352972
Burning Wheel sounds like it could work well. It's easy to make work for a relatively mundane setting but still has options for magic if you want to introduce that stuff later.

Latest update for Starfinder: The Mystic

This is the one of the Magic Classes for the game. It's magic reaches the equivalent of 6th Level spells, which are the highest in Starfinder. It basically combines all those Arcane, Divine, and whatever made up magic groups you can come up with.

http://paizo.com/paizo/blog/v5748dyo5ljtz?Class-Preview-The-Mystic

What do you think of it's special ability:
>Backlash (SU)
>Whenever a foe succeeds at a Will save against one of your spells and completely negates the effect, that foe takes 1 nonlethal damage for each mystic level you have. This is a mind-affecting pain effect.
Seems kind of early but posting here before sleep.

i just found this setting. it sounds really good as ideas go. how hard is to make the transition from high fantasy DnD to this ? its the only thing that scares me. New monsters and a new way of dealing with the environment. Are the premade adventures any good ? what is your opinion on it ?

>it sounds really good as ideas go.

>how hard is to make the transition from high fantasy DnD to this ?
You'd be amazed at how little difference there is between fantasy and sci-fi.
Numenera is a smaller departure from not!Forgotten Realms than Wilderlands of High Fantasy is.

>Are the premade adventures any good ?
No.
>what is your opinion on it ?
Mechanically, it's garbage.
Thematically, it's underdeveloped garbage.
The idea had some potential, but it was not exploited or even properly developed.

Going from D&Dfinder to numanuma is pretty easy seeing it is a "rules light" system written by a hack who decided that what a rules light system needed was more d20.
Everything it does is done better by something else and the fluff is too scatterbrained and space magic did it to actually be any good.
