GMs, how many of a monster would I have to kill to start seeing a dent in their numbers?
17 posts and 3 images submitted.

>>53371348
In some settings, this is stupid.
In others, this is common sense.
In any zombie apocalypse there has to be a limited number of zombies. It should be 100% feasible to clear several kilometres of countryside completely free of zombies, yet in every zombie apocalypse anything they just build big walls around their settlements and let zombies walk all the way up to the walls.
This is why I root for the zombies, humans are too stupid to live.
>>
>>53371348
Depends on the monster
>>
>>53371348
Define dent. If you mean perceptible (~10%) change in frequency of sightings, we're talking 2 or 3 nests in and around the district. For something genuinely meaningful (~30%), you're looking at at least 100 brutally displayed bodies or twice that for simple population reduction without terror tactics.

I have made this biggest mistske. I trust my players too much. One of then used a wish spell to go back in time to prevent his god from dying. And I allowed it thinking this would be the end of his character arc, as his whole reason for being with the group was to ressurect his god.
But he didnt want to reroll a character, so he proceeded to find all the other players before they began adventuring and fucked up all their back stories so it would make sense for his character to want to adventure with them.

So now everyone's characters areally different and 10 sessions of story have been erased.
Has anyone fucked up worse than me? Let me know so I can feel slightly better whIle I rewrite this campaign today.

Are your players okay with this? If no, it's perfectly fine, and hell, honestly the better option to tell this guy "No, fuck you, last session didn't happen. How dare you take advantage of my trust to do something so dumb like this, we're going to undo it and try the session again." then letting him shit all over everything.

Winds carrying spores flow from the east, as insects thrive and infect the west. From the depths of Africa arise the inheritors of man kind, while the Sons of the Crow linger in the shadow of the Bygones. Underneath crumbling, ruined buildings. Rule is not set down by nations, but by Cults and faith. As man bickers, and bleats in the darkness thrashing around only to bite himself, they grow stronger. They who will one day inherit all.

This world is not our own. It has been taken from us.

Degenesis: Rebirth is the second edition of the German made roleplaying game by arthouse SIXMOREVODKA. Degensis takes place in 2595, five hundred years after a meteor cluster impacted Earth called 'the Eshaton'. Mankind of 2095 were already faced with several issues, including a virus that had infected most computers bricking them in the process and causing a collapse of the internet, along with a virulent, highly deadly mutated form of the AIDs virus. Oceans rose and fell, Germany was split down in the middle by a fissure dubbed 'the Reaper's Blow'. Inside of the meteorites was a substance called the Primer, which on Africa created the steadily encroaching Psychovore flora, while in the impacts across Europe a different form took shape. That of Sepsis, a fungal growth that steadily, slowly mutates all life around.

Cults arose. Some with origins long, long before Eshaton.

This story is not consumed with the titanic struggle of the 26th century Homo Sapiens and Homo Degenesis. It is a story of people. Cobbling together a world from the ruins of mistakes past and present.

When the Black God rose, many rose up with him. Long silent clans gathered themselves and followed their god on his great march south. Praha burned. Now the fires of its ruination warm its invaders through the long winter. Still, the Black God marched south. From Borca to Balkhan, he carves a path of destruction in his wake. With him, clans driven by rage partook in violence, inflicted upon any and all that they perceived as having 'deserved it'. The march now carves through Pest. The Dushani's songs turn to cries of rage. Stability turns to chaos. The Balkhani suffer. Some have lost status, other have lost homes, and some have lost much, much more. Many fled Balkhan, moving north to Eastern Borca, with hope for a new future.

Four months ago they found a place. It was empty, but not theirs. It is called Junction, after the words on the sign that hangs over the ancient overpass. Who placed the rusted sign there, and when, is unknown. Junction was used as a place of rest for Jehammedans taking the journey to and from Osman. Now, it is a growing and bustling settlement of sheet metal shacks and tents. The refugees from Balkhan have taken this spot as their own. They've assembled their homes on the overpass and beneath it, in the underpass. Like an invasive plant, the shacks and tents spread out uncontrolled and chaotic. The only rhythm to be found in this place is in the synchronized stories of suffering from the refugees.
>>
They were ignored by the rest of the world for two months. Then the eyes of the Protectorate fell upon them, from the other side of the Reaper's Blow. The Chroniclers see suffering and opportunity. The Protectorate's allies, the Hellvetics, see a small, but potential danger: Junction is close to their territory in the Alps. By the time the Protectorate organized the first Hellvetic detachment to aid the settlement of Junction, it was already a culture of its own.Apocalyptics had taken the subway station as their home, and the tunnels within were their domain now. The Hellvetics give out scant food to the refugees, but it's not enough. Nothing seems enough to quell the growing discontent, the desire to blame, and the familial tensions that accompany all of Balkhani culture.

Now, the Protectorate's presence in Junction is limited. A Chronicler coordinates efforts alongside a high ranking Hellvetic. Some low ranking Hellvetic soldiers do what they can to hand out supplies and establish stability, but it is not enough. Junction must be evaluated, so the Protectorate has sent a small group to assist in the aid effort. It is the first days of Spring, and still snow covers the ground. The journey was not easy, but it was necessary. The Protectorate has sent two delegates alongside the latest Hellvetic supplies shipment from the Alps. The first is a Spitalian, who had to part ways with comrades during the Alps crossing. Most Spitalians who cross the Reaper's Blow are heading for Pollen, the front lines against the Primer. This one is going on a less glorious mission, but perhaps an equally important one. The second delegate is a lone Judge. They are a common sight in the Protectorate, but beyond those lands their power is limited. The land that awaits him may not be kind, but he has a mission.

The path Rodrigo Gutierrez and Judge Payne walk on clears steadily. The snow has been cleared by the Hellvetics that move to and from this place. Ahead of them, they can see Junction, with its large sign hanging off of what makes the settlement: A large, intact bridge from the pre-eshaton days. But before that bridge is the Hellvetic outpost, serving as a 'gate' of sorts to Junction. They are awaited by what looks like a female Hellvetic officer. The privates that were transporting food with Judge Payne and Rodrigo split off from the group to deliver their cargo. The Hellvetic officer steps forward.

"Is this all the Protectorate sent?" Freja states looking over the pair.

"That it is, as much as it shames me to see it,” Doctor Gutierrez replies to her with a nod.

"Afraid so,” Payne adds curtly.

"So be it." The woman seems frustrated. She motions to the Corporal beside her. “ I'm volunteering you to assist these men. I'll not have them wandering about without a proper Hellvetic at their side."

"Do you think this will be necessary?” Rodrigo asks, “I was told it was just refugees here."

"Just refugees means a lot,” Freja asserts, “Spitalian. You haven't been given an easy assignment. Our Chronicler can fill you all in on the details. Follow me. I'm Freja of Reschen. Current Commander of the Hellvetics here. You have a problem with them, you come to me."

Payne shrugs and scratches his head underneath his hat.

What are your feelings on game settings that use really weird, strange, or otherwise non-traditional races or other fantasy elements?
This doesn't include cases of Not!Elves or Not!Dwarves, where the GM has inserted a strange new race but still called it Elves or something because of a superficial resemblance.

If your GM introduces a race that isn't just a recolor of a Tolkien one, does it put you off? Are you fascinated by them? Does it have any sort of an impact at all?

As long as it's not done just for it's own sake of "I'M DOING SOMETHING DIFFERENT!"

Plenty of tabletop races would be considered weird by the "non-tolkien" metric. I didn't know what the fuck a tiefling was when I started playing D&D. After like two campaigns they became a pretty standard race in my view

I'd like to see some goat-humans that are literally people with an impressive digestive tract and maybe some horn-like protrusions over their knuckles.
>>
I'm fine with inspired by settings, but only as long as you add good world-building and a decent narrative.
I played a game where there were Aurox and Buffalo Minotaur people who were basically Persian~Dwarves with a heavy emphasis on castes borrowed from Indian and Berber culture.

So he took a standard race and familiar themes, and created his own thing complete with unique religious practice.

If "I hit him with my sword" is a valid way of stablishing an attack because we accept that the people at the table don't necessarily need to know how swords work, it stands to reason that "I give a counterargument" should be acceptable during social interactions if the player isn't really good at it, which is quite common in the RPG scene.

Now, I don't say all dialogues should happen on a "I do this" kind of basis, as you can actually talk in real time as opposed to, say, hack a computer, but the truth stays that there's a point where the character's Persuasion skill is far better than what any real person could actually do.

In certain games it's entirely possible to convince a person of suicide simply by talking to them (no magic/powers involved), such is the charisma of certain characters. How am I suposed to roleplay that at all? Nothing I could come up with will ever be as good as what my character actually said and the way he said it, proof being I still haven't convinced anyone of suicide.

Now, another point entirely would be: if social interactions should be done verbally, why is a roll required then? If the DM needs to hear my arguments and how I put them to evaluate if the roll should be even made, why not make it instantly work if I was actually convincing enough? Why should social skills have two barriers of success instead of one like the rest of the game? Wouldn't at that point make more sense to simply disregard ingame mechanics for social encounters and just let players do their best at it?

How the hell do genestealers make use of space hulks? In 4th ed it is mentioned that Nids consider it to be a very effective tactic of scouting out potential victim worlds and seeding them with vanguard organisms.

>1. How the hell do you scout out new worlds as genestealer while inside the wrecked mass of metal and electronics, let alone fly towards it? Genestealers controlling a space hulk is a dumb as if Alien took control over Nostromo and started drifting towards Earth.
>2. How the hell do you land that thing on a planet, let alone in a discreet fashion? Yeah, there is gigantic fuckhuge spacecraft crashing into planet with a fuckton of biomass on it and not responding to radio calls, why not just bathe the landing sight with promethium and call it a day?

My knowledge on Nid lore is not that great, so forgive me if the answer is mentioned somewhere in their fluff.

They use space hulks as a stepping stone in world invasions. Genestealer broods have very limited space travel capabilities, so they stay on space hulks until they drift close to inhabited star systems, at which point some leave and the rest presumably hang around to wait for it to drift into another system.
Also Space hulks are planet-sized.
>>
>>53368882
They put their own ships inside the space hulk. Basically they use it as a poorly controlled aircraft carrier.
>>
>>53368973
But just by drifting it'd take like centuries to get from point A to point B. Does not seem that effective.
>>53369009
Oh, so an infested Space Hulk is sort of like a tyranid ship that has bio-engines and ways to drop spoores on planets? So it does not need to land on a planet, but rather go on low-orbit and start snowing out its goods on the masses below.

These dorf brothers.

I tried asking about this on /v/ a few days ago, and the only response I got was that MUDs were a dead genre from one guy.

However, because /tg/ is basically the quintessential roleplaying board, I was wondering if anyone here was deep into any MUD games?

I've recently been playing a game called Achaea, and I was surprised by how much the concept of these games intrigued me.

But I've been having difficulty really establishing a rapport with anyone I met, mainly because A) Interactions with people around my own level are confused and awkward because we don't know much about what the fuck is going on, and B) Interactions with any veterans are weird and cryptic because their understanding of how the game and its social dynamics work are way different than mine.

Also, though most people are chill I keep stumbling upon interactions with weird autists. I guess that just sort of happens.

Anyway, general MUD thread.

I've tried to get into MUDs too and it is a challenge. There's only a few MUDs with huge large populations and the smaller niche ones have the same 10 people that have been playing since the 90s and tend to be a circlejerk of OP characters and old friends.

I think I like the idea of it far more than the reality. It's an incredible historical curiosity of both video games and roleplaying games.

I have no recs for MUDs, but I'd love to try one based off an existing RPG to maybe help with learning how the fuck things work. I found one WoD MUD that wasn't dead, but that's all.
>>
>>53363515
The only two that I know of that are relatively healthy are Aardwolf and Achaea.

Aardwolf is more active, having around 250 or so players at peak times, but honestly I just sort of dislike that game's feel.

Achaea has like 150 or so players on a good day, which really isn't a lot. This lends itself to the feeling that you the players either already know everyone or are total outsiders.

I'm not having difficulty learning the controls or how to play (There is some annoying shit related to how combat and afflictions work, but whatever.), my main problem is that the people I'm meeting just don't seem very cordial.

Even when there's 20 people online in my characters city, I just plain don't see anyone talking like normal people or anything, I'm starting to get the sense that most of the actual conversations are going on entirely in private messages and parties and I'm just sort of shit out of luck unless I can break into some kind of private circle, which poses a huge problem as I won't know whether or not the people I'm dealing with are cringey fucktards unless I can get them to open up to me.
>>
>>53363679
Eh, 150 is still quite a bit. If you think about when these games were in their heyday back in the 80s-90s 20+ was a large number. It's just that now it's all very cliquey and that makes it hard to break in to. Everyone is best friends on smaller servers so new blood is rare.

Also as a note about numbers not all of those are active players. Look at a "who" list and you'll see a shitload that have been on for months. A lot of people just leave it open in the background constantly and use it for social reasons or it'll be just to artificially inflate the numbers.

How do you stay dead without being a jerk? I spent three hours dead in D&D yesterday, which produced the small problem of what exactly I should be doing during that time. Is it okay to go read a book or play a game? Do I have to stay at the table? Thanks for your time.

It is very Ironic that Ed Greenwood talked about how Dragonlance setting had too much `power` in it, with heroes taking the major roles, leaving players to do scrap work, he intended Forgotten Realms to be the exact opposite, but at the end it become even a shitty hero playground than dragonlance.
Forgotten Reams was THE generic campaign setting in the 90s, It enjoyed the TSR policy of pumping novels and sourcebooks in early 90s and baldurs gate game popularity of later 90s early 00s. Wizards policy of supporting it also bolstered its popularity.

But this popularity made the setting saturated, It is nice to imho to have detailed histories and characters etc for almost all places, some disagree with this and argue for a more vague setting that leaves GM's leeway to improvise (like pathfinders Golarion) but I prefer having a rich background and lore, again this is debatable.
What is not debatable imho is the Heroes, almost every place has major players, heroes etc and due to the novels popularity, it kinda pushes the players towards `why should I do this, when elminster can come` bullshittery. This became so bad that ed greenwood talked about it in the 3rd campaign setting, pic very much related.
