ForeverGMs/DMs/Referess if you have something to get off your chest, do it here.
I'll start.
I ran a Dark Heresy campaign last year during which I named most of my NPCs after Fonts in Microsoft Word and no one ever noticed.
The closest I think my players got to spotting the pattern was when they were enlisted to hunt down a Heretekal Tech Priest named Magus Calibri. I got some funny looks, but no one said anything.
>>53344031
Please tell me you had a wacky comic relief deep hive ganger named Wingding.
>>53344031
I run games because I want to see other perspectives or surprise people with scenarios. I am constantly bored or disappointed in the players I recruit because they are so damn dull and I don't know how to screen them out properly during the recruitment process.
>>53344031
I wish my players would take initiative more and have goals for their characters.
When I'm a player my characters always have stuff they want to do. I mean i'll follow the story that the GM is setting up, but you can be damn sure that I'm going to the market and look for a dragon tooth and ask people if they know the location of a dragon's nest because my character wants to gain the essence of a dragon. Likewise he will go to the library and inquire about dragon-related books.
Or maybe he will have something else he wants to do. Maybe he wants to arrange a festival in the city going to the mayor to ask permission and get all the shops to arrange something.
But not my players. They are fully content with just dungeon crawling and going in whatever direction i point them in. It's like all their characters are good for is stats on a paper and game mechanics.
We used to have another GM and when i was a player i could get the other players to join in by leading by example, but now that i GM it's like they just can't be bothered.

Save for goblin Sharks, Bull sharks, Hammerheads, and ROCKET SPEED TORPEDO PREHISTORIC SHARKS THAT CAUSE WHALES TO EXPLODE ON CONTACT.

We don't need to keep it up long. It's only a few hours until East Burgerland gets home from school and work.
Why do dragons always have to be the big bad mid tier boss creatures or a BBEG tier final boss? Why aren't they normally depicted as all shapes and sizes like humanoid races who interact with people like, uh, other people?

If the Tyranids came across the BETA from Muv-Luv who would win the fight? Would we see giant super nids become more common?

Sup cunts, crossboard visitor here. I'm looking to start getting into Warhammer 40K lore. What are some good novels for a new person to start reading for the literary immersion part of it? I've only a very rough basic understanding of the 40K lore and would like to know more.
Now please be a crossboarder somewhere else.

I suggest Baneblade and Shadowsword by Guy Haley, and the two short stories that fit between the two novels, Stormlord and Iron Harvest. Basically Fury/Band of brothers in a tank on 40k. Excellent books.
I also suggest Deathwatch by Steve Parker, the Caiphas Cain serie, and Pdf related, a book that shows whatevery book about an unknown chapter shoulf be. You can't buy it so you'd have to torrent it otherwise.
Redemption Corps is pretty cool as well and the Night Lord Trilogy is a sure value.
You'd do well to read Lexicanum, and just be curious about stuff, that's how you discover the lore and the connected novels that relate to it.

I recently bought the d&d starter set and I want to play with some friends. Can you give me some advice on getting started?
>>53356834
Recognize that your game is unbalanced, it will never be balanced, and it is better to recognize this and handle the specific issues that players might have.
Inb4 "don't play d&d"
>>53356834
Return the starter set and grab a copy of Ryuutama or Beyond the Wall instead.
>>53356834
step 1: Get some friends
What D&D 5e games should I observe to become a better DM? I've heard some people on here praise Critical Role, some bash it, so I'm not sure what I should be looking for.
I'd like a game with a healthy mix of mechanics and roleplay, about 50/50, since that's what my players seem to prefer. Thanks in advance.

I'll take the edgy clown bard in the center please. Works just as well as a rogue in a pinch.
I take clothlady because she's the most likely to have levels in cleric.
I'm not good at conversation in real life, because I put a lot of thought into every word I say, which causes me to miss my chance and end up saying nothing. In fact it took me over 10 minutes to type this post.
This gets harder when I have the additional step of "what exact words would this character say?", and I just can't get into the mind of a character who isn't myself.
I'm not so bad at roleplaying ACTIONS, but for WORDS it takes a lot of effort to make sure I'm being consistent with my character's personality traits that are different from my own personality traits. Like I'm neurologically incapable of imagining what exact words would come out of a different person's mouth. I don't understand how personality traits relate to speech. I keep trying and I always take too long to think about it.
I'm going to keep asking until I get good advice or a suitable new hobby.
I'm running out of time to understand how to roleplay. There's going to be a campaign starting in a week or two that I'm not sure I should join.
My last RP group (online, text only) broke up over it, but I don't want to quit roleplaying because I enjoy it so much. How do I get better?
>practice
Technically that's what I'm doing, unless you mean a dedicated practice exercise outside of game sessions.
If I "practice" by continuing to actually play tabletopn RPG campaigns and I fail, then that has consequences for other people, so I consider it more than just practice.
I ALREADY KNOW the answer is "practice", but what can I do IN ADDITION TO "practice" in the meantime?
>just do it
Just cure cancer! It's that easy!
>an hero
Nice meme.
>>53355573
>I'm not so bad at roleplaying ACTIONS, but for WORDS it takes a lot of effort
If you don't figure it out in time for the campaign I've had a lot of fun playing mute characters in the past.

Maybe have a libation and stop overthinking it?
If you're piss poor at staying in constant character be reactionary instead. Don't think about how your character would act just get in the "mood" of your character and react to the shit happening. You'll find your groove once you stop roll-killing yourself.
/tg/, I need ideas. Ideas of fantasy urban encounters!
One I've wanted to try for a while is a traveling fantasy circus with animal-based acts and either an evil wizard or thieves trying to steal the animals or something accidentally let them loose in the city. So you have magical fantasy creatures wreaking level appropriate amount of havoc and the party has to round them up killing as few as possible and limiting collateral damage.

You notice a tense-looking pixie struggling to carry a human wallet out of an alley. A human lies face-down deep in the alley, alive but bleeding out. The human is unresponsive and won't survive without immediate medical attention. You realize that a pixie brothel of ill repute is just a few blocks away.
A bulky-looking man in a trenchcoat with the head of a rat offers to sell you drugs. It turns out he's actually several devil rats stacked on top of one another.
Several pigeons appear huddled in a circle. They appear to be focused around a chalk drawing that resembles a map of the garden district. They coo and bob their heads as if in agreement. As they fly away, you notice that one is carrying a piece of chalk.
As you walk down the street, you occasionally notice some burly dog-men in suits, glancing at you. After seeing the same few several times, it seems clear that they've been following you. They are moving to cover alleys that you might use to escape. You hear growling, followed by the sound of several switchblades opening.

What would Sanctioned Xeno do in other jumps?
Our DM is currently running a D&D 1st edition game, and it's pretty fun for all the other players at the table except for me. I got stuck with having Thief Characters, and Thief/Rogue in 1.0 plays horribly. Tiny chances of doing anything useful with stealth, lockpicking or finding traps right off the bat, a tiny health pool, barely any combat abilities, and ranged weapons suck to use because any that do actual damage have an absurd reload time.
I would be fine with the low-level bitchwork here if it also wasn't our party's attitude towards stealth characters, or at least, mine. Every time shit hits the fan if we need a sacrificial lamb, it's my Thief/Assassin that gets left behind. Our Barbarian just sprints away and our cleric uses her magic ring to fuck off to where whatever is attacking her can't reach her.
This leaves me, our magic user, and other fighter. The problem is our other fighter is also an ass, and I'm at the front of the party a majority of the time, meaning I'm first on the chopping block.I have run through 5 character sheets in the last four months during our weekly sessions, because our party treats my characters as disposable. What the hell am I supposed to do? The stealth characters in 1.0 have nothing going for them and I can't survive long enough to have any chance of success. They're all level 4/5 and I'm still rocking a level 1 because I keep getting sacrificed. I have an agreement with the DM that I have to keep playing stealth characters, at least for this campaign.
TL;DR Unsupportive party doesn't help the Thief and I keep having to make new characters. What do I do?
>>53354862
If you have to play a stealth character, talk to the DM about finding a stealth option that isn't so easy to murder.
Although since you're level 1 in a level 5 party, you're kinda fucked. You might want to just start hiding behind the other characters, and then trying to make sure you're not the one left behind.
>>53354862
Stop making Thieves maybe?
