We've all had that moment where, in a game, book, or what-have-you you were otherwise enjoying, the ending not only failed to deliver but seemed rather bland and bad by comparison. How do you, as DM's or players, invest yourselves deeply enough into your games to avoid this state? What sorts of recommendations would you give in order to facilitate this?
Basically, how do you ensure that everything goes off just right at what could be the emotional height of the game? Sandbox DMs or players need not apply, unless there is/was a cohesive story associated with it.

Add an explosion.
>>53351138
Yeah, they needed to make it a 45 minute long special with a quarter of the running time dedicated to the war on Aku, and another quarter dedicated to Jack's biggest fight ever.
Has GW forgotten these exist? They never get talked about in lore or in games.
good.
>>53350312
Prepare for them to be extra forgotten when the Primaris Exterminators and vehicles start hitting.
>>53350312
You're forgetting the worst one of them all
I was thinking about how well X-wing does and besides the star wars name it hit me, the game is sold at Barnes and Noble. So I was thinking why don't GW start to sell the easy to assemble kits and B&N along with the codexs
>>53350194
But I don't want it to be mainstream. I mean, it is about as mainstream as a tabletop wargame can get outside of XWing, seeing as the sci-fi section at said Barnes and Noble is composed of several hundred Horus Heresy novels.
X-Wing is pre-painted and ready to play for normies who don't want to get engulfed by a deeply autistic hobby. It's more like a board game.
Warhammer 40k is a Rolls-Royce-costing luxury game that requires actual time commitment and willingness to learn the skills of modelling and painting that take months and years to become proficient and then skilled. All the shit you have to know to even make a squad of a troop choice, from buying a bunch of paints and tools to learning techniques and the why behind paint lore and loadouts, takes actual time. There's no way in hell such a thing is going to sell in masses at a book store. Dealing with GW and hawking their rack of shit is really only possible for niche places like FLGS who cater to serious collectors/hobbyists. Plus there's are no tables at B&N to play, which is another mega downside to buying there.
The only way to sell 40k at a normal store is to make it like X-Wing, which means changing it into an entirely different game/hobby.
>>53350194
Make it remotely affordable to anyone who isn't already playing it anyway. There is no good way to onboard new players which is why the playerbase has stagnated for a decade.
Other than that have rules that aren't absolute trash which create lop sided and totally pre-determined games (lol knights). Something they never quite achieved, but late fifth was probably the closest they managed.
Is there such a thing as too much realism?
>>53349233
Over-complication is bad. It's often related to realism; but it's not the same thing.
>>53349233
always, in both vidya and tabletop having too much realism can make a game too tedious, boring or frustrating to play if you aren't careful with it.
conversely too little realism can sometimes lead to a game feeling cartoony, simplified or just strange if it goes too far in the opposite direction.

Pathfinder General /pfg/
Defeat Edition
Maybe you overestimated your players' capabilities or underestimated their bad luck, maybe they had a really stupid idea or maybe you just overshoot with monsters' stats. The question is, how do you cope with defeat? Retcons, tactical retreat to tackle the encounter later, incorporating it into the plot? Maybe just lots of salty tears?

capture and escape scenarios at low levels
Ressurection by the BBEG/other high powered forces with geas-type scenarios at higher levels
For those PCs for whom being captured/bound does nothing, better to have them overly secured like having all 4 limbs chained up, gagged and mind-drugged to prevent purely mental action

I give my players a 1-a-game saving grace if the circumstances would theoretically permit them to live a situation where they would normally die, such as the situation in a game not too long ago where a player was about to die to a bunch of Rogues but their healer was there to technically heal him mid-stabbing so he didn't totally die from his injuries.
If the healer wasn't there he would have been super dead.
Starting a new campaign tomorrow. Any Advice?

>>53348683
You really, really have to give us more than that if you want advice. What system? Party? What's the campaign premise? Is there something in particular you're having trouble with? Etc.

I said I dunno, anon. The exact mechanics were never detailed in the story. Use your imagination and wank responsibly.

Where did you find your faith, if you have any? Where do you place it?
>10 "that guy / that GM / what kills a game for you / red flag / immediate drop" threads a day
/tg/ what the fuck do you just LOVE seeing at the table? What still captures the magic for you? What can GMs or players do, or what can you do as a GM or player, that really tickles your fancy and just gets you sucked in and totally engrossed in some great RP, when you look up and it's suddenly 1 AM and you hadn't even noticed the time slip by?

Surprise me by playing against stereotypes, but not against estabilished characters.
Creating the setting as a group, and everybody partecipates.
Trying new games hard and fair.
Sticking to what the game is about.

Discuss all things Uno related!
What are your favorite house rules?
What are the best strategies to use in order to win?
Is it ever okay to use your "full power" against younger players? Or even your own kids?
Can adults have fun with Uno as much as kids?
I'll start with an Uno related story:
>Be le me using a le Reddit begining for greentext
>I am forced to attend children's birthday party
>Join kids in a game of Uno
>Fucking around, only half paying attention
>8 year old kid is down to one card and screams "UNO" as if it's the only thing he'll ever accomplish for the rest of his life.
>I throw a Wild Draw 4 on him
>He looks 20-something me square in the eye and says "FUCK YOU!"
>I LOL
>>53347371
Cumulative Draw 2 and Draw 4, as in, you throw a Draw 2 at someone, and if they have a Draw 2, they can throw it down and the next in line either has to lay a Draw 2 or else draw 4. This keeps adding up until someone can't throw a Draw 2.
There is no real strategy. It's pretty random. And I don't really have house rules. This shit is gonna be deader than chess threads. We need a "games nobody else but the biggest fucking spergs care about" thread. Because a lot of games get drowned out in 40k, ttrpg, and magic threads.
>>53347371
My family has a house rule where if you have the exact matching card you can lay that card down out of turn. The play goes on as if you had skipped everyone else's turn. This speeds up play because if you aren't laying cards fast there's a good chance you'll get skipped.
/tg/ I need your most terrifying, awe inspiring, causing adults to kneel and cry as they see doom on flaming wings, massive, primal, and ferocious dragons. Nothing that seems like it could be talked out of what it's doing or has any way to even talk. Just a giant, terrifying monstrosity. Or ones that look like winged, fire breathing dinosaurs. Those are nice as well.
Only the most terrifying.
>>53347179
I like your enthusiasm but I still need my players to sleep at night. I need something more animistic, less horror movie
>A really stronk duelist challenges a party member to a duel.
How do you tempt your players into fighting what would be considered a optional super boss without just the generic "he gives you some shiny new gear" or "he joins your party for a while"?
>>53347111
You gotta work up to it.
First he has to become an irritation to the party.
Status. Beat the best and you become known as the best. Let them leverage a new found reputation for fun and profit. Intimidate people who'd otherwise fight the party, get contracts they'd have been passed over for, kid's asking for autographs and wannabe groupies throwing Lacey undergarments at them.
He insults then and offers a duel to restore their honor.
He forces the party to insult him (some sort of local rude action or hospitality, or just bumping into them and spilling his drink) and demands a duel to restore his honor.
He hosts a fighting tournament before revealing himself as the current champion.
He duels every other member of a PC's family and defeats them, robbing the family of wealth, then stakes it all on a duel offered to the PC.
He buys the next bridge the party is going to cross and refuses to let them pass without a duel.
He steals all the party's footwear while they sleep and will only return it if they face him barefoot on the naked earth of the dueling ring.
He steals all the party's clothing while they sleep and will only return it if they face him naked on the naked earth of the dueling ring.
He steals the party's next macguffin and stakes it on the outcome of a duel.
He steps in for the next person the party has legal trouble with, offering to duel one of them to decide the case.
He hires a witch to give one of the PCs horrific nightmares each and every night which can only be resolved (this is stated in the dream) by dueling him.
He pretends to know the whereabouts of one of the PCs lost loves/relatives and offers to tell them if they duel him.
Etc etc etc.
The current Party enters Silent Hill
What repressed feelings do each party member have, and how will the town use them against the party?
What sort of monsters will the town make for the party?
>>53347000
I've been repressing my urge to tell OP that he is a faggot.
That could haunt me, so I'll just voice it now.
>playing Unknown Armies
they'd either weaponise it, get charges out of it, or somehow prove "too spicy" for the place to handle.
In fact, I'm pretty sure the epidromancer of the party wouldn't even notice anything was amiss.
>>53347000
Why is it always Silent Hill 2's "your character's psychological issues" thing
