How big my achivements would have to be to let me name an element?
>>8798795
My flyover state got an element named after it so not much I guess.
>>8798795
All the relevant elements were named a long time ago.
No one cares about your lab project that decays in a microsecond.

See this guy right here?
His head is the size of a watermelon.
Yet he wasted his life with string theory which will be in the chapter following phlogiston theory in the next fifty year books.
Meanwhile you will have no gf an you will feel bad about that.

How do I learn geometry?
Also, let's talk about geometry.
>>8798792
What kind of geometry?
>>8798801
I dunno, new into the topic.
how do I learn it?
>>8798802
>how do I learn it?
learn what
euclidean geometry, hyperbolic geometry. differential geometry, algebraic geometry, symplectic geometry, interuniversal geometry ?!?!?!
Is he right?

Hey guys. I just into a volunteering work with a local space program.
I've been given a task to explore on converting Matlab codes into C programming. Also to learn some of Matlab software.
I have some programming experience with Java and have been working with it for several years and some web development experience as well. But I don't have Matlab nor any data science/engineer kinda work before.
So, what does Matlab have anything to do with aerospace industry? Can someone give me example of any github repo or open source projects that does so? Another thing is where and how do I start learning the aerospace engineering with Matlab/C language? Do I need a lot of mathematics equation to begin with? Or just a knowledge on how calculus work should suffice?
Thanks guys
>>8798653
Suggest me some books (pdf, epub) that I should read for learning
>>8798653
>what does matlab have to do with the aerospace industry?
Matlab is a useful high level programming language for basically any scientific field. The toolboxes are very helpful when doing statistical analysis, data analytics, large computations, machine learning etc. Matlab is used a lot in quantitative finance, research, engineering etc.
>open source projects?
Lots of useful open source libraries you can find
>how do I learn?
Literally the same as every other programming language. Practice it and look at the documentation when you need to
>do I need a lot of math?
Obviously this depends on what you're doing with it. Some projects require 0 math, some require advanced math. This is like asking if you need to know biology to work at a university.
>>8798653
>I have some programming experience with Java and have been working with it for several years and some web development experience as well
Kill yourself.
Is there any reason at all to be forced to take subjects wholly unrelated to your degree? Is this done to inflate college prices or what?
It's almost like universities are supposed to be institutions of higher learning and not just job training centers.
>>8798568
Nobody gives a fuck about "higher" learning IRL.
>>8798568
this.
but op is right in some regard, not to inflate prices but some courses and in extension faculties would not have the enrollment they do without blanket prereqs. like calculus for science degrees no doubt helps pads the math department while perhaps being unnecessary for social sciences
why do human brains obsess compulsively over things and people that they can never realistically have?
What is the evolutionary significance of this type of futile behaviour?
>>8798444
Wanna elaborate what you're thinking of?
In terms of social status a little bit of envy doesn't hurt in motivating oneself.
>>8798447
basically, what is the evolutionary significance of oneitism i.e. obsessing about someone who you can never realistically have?
I don't think its really envy.
>>8798451
Wow you stupid fucking nigger. I thought we'd be talking about something interesting but you're just thirsty for some girls.
Maybe if you didn't have the slightest bit of urge to fuck Susan you'd give up an spend the rest of your days watching anime. Oh wait.
Any biologists here? How would you go about checking to see if a gene is under selection WITHOUT using genetics? I'm guessing I'd have to use some molecular?
>>8798404
What gene, and what do you mean by not using genetics?
>>8798404
If you know the protein associated with the gene you could try and measure the levels of that in a population I guess.
hello. The task is simple: i need to find the resistance of the whole chain The only known thing is that r1=r2=r3...=r12=r. Help would be much appreciated.
>>8798387
Draw the corresponding curcuit.
>>8798534
what is that and how do i do that
>>8798587
Fold down to simplify, do PI to T, get 0.8r.
Hello /sci/.
I need some help, How do I isolate θ from this equation?
Use:
sin(u-v) = sin(u)cos(v) + sin(v)cos(u)
and
cos(u-v) = cos(u)cos(v) + sin(u)sin(v)
Sorry if no latex
so far ive managed to reduce the expression inside the cos^-1 to:
[math]\frac{1}{2}(\cos\theta(\cos\frac{\pi}{n}+1)+\cos\frac{4\pi}{n}-1)[/math]
Mathematica says it's
[eqn]
2 \left(\tan ^{-1}\left(\pm\frac{\sqrt{\cos \left(\frac{720}{n}\right)-\cos \left(\frac{180 \left(A+\pi n r^2-2 \pi r^2\right)}{\pi n r^2}\right)}}{\sqrt{\cos \left(\frac{720}{n}\right)+1}},\pm\frac{\sqrt{\cos \left(\frac{180 \left(A+\pi n r^2-2 \pi r^2\right)}{\pi n r^2}\right)+1}}{\sqrt{\cos \left(\frac{720}{n}\right)+1}}\right)+2 \pi c_1+90\right)
[/eqn]
Which is more useful: Calculus, Statistics or Linear Algebra? Pic Unrelated.
more useful in what context?

>>8797974
most applications.
How did you engineers make it through trig? Anything you remember that helped you get through it? Im probably just a brainlet but im curious as what resources other people used to help them with trig.
You mean the identities or just everyrhing?
>>8797957
Funny you mention that, i took a test today involving the memorization of the 8 "basic" identities, couldnt remember shit come testing time. Granted i could have definitely used some more study time. But im just looking to see if anyone has any tips or notes they distinctly remember that helped them in trig. Ways to remember that the identities would be very welcome too

>Find me a bigfoot fire/camp

>Sited hundreds of miles from caves
>Hurr Durr they come out at night

What does /sci/ think of the self-described "rationality community," i.e. Eliezer Yudkowsky, Robin Hanson, Scott Alexander, LessWrong, etc.?
>>8797818
We don't.
>>8797818
"rationality community"
JOIN US GUYS. JOIN THE RATIONALITY COMMUNITY, AS OPPOSED TO EVERYBODY ELSE WHO IS EXPLICITLY AGAINST RATIONALITY
Robin Hanson is a genius, pic related.
His GRE scores, back when the GRE was hard:
GRE 1991: Verb 770/99% Quan 780/94% Anal 730/92% 1980: Physics 960/98%
http://mason.gmu.edu/~rhanson/home.html
That would put Hanson in the mid-150s, IQ-wise. If I remember correctly, Eliezer has a tested IQ in the mid-140s, so he's no slouch either.
Clearly a smart group. But LessWrong tends to be too insular for its own good.
I would like to learn calculus but don't know where to start, any suggestions sci?

Pick up Stewart if you want to know only fundamentals. If you want a better albeit more theoretical understanding, grab Spivak. Or read both. Paul's Online Notes is also a good supplement to both textbooks. Use online videos like Khan academy to help you through, and if you ever have lingering questions go to stack exchange, leddit or even the stupid questions general here.
Good luck. Patience is key
