Paul Erdos took amphetamines throughout his life to increase his mathematical output. When someone bet him that he couldn't quit for a month, he did, and then once the month was over proclaimed that mathematics had suffered and was now one month behind because he had quit

Will amphetamines help me study? Are they useful? Is he an aberration or are they really good?

I've never tried adderall but it really interests me. Taking a pill then being able to study for hours without distractions. Is that how it works? Is it worth it? Are the side effects bad?

Paul Erdos was already smart, he just needed that BOOST.

Just take coffee, multivitamins and omega 3 if you want to play it safe.

Your professor was a designer. Not an engineer, there is a difference.

Designers design and engineers make it work with maths. I am a civil drafter and my dad does civil design/engineering. He mainly does design now and has an engineer sign off on his plans, a lot less stress.

Often i find on /sci/ a bunch of mathematicians or unprofessional scientists bragging about how intellectual they are in comparison to normies. Today i have decided to burst that bubble by suggesting the ultimate brain, superior to all supposed "brains" here on /sci/.

It seems that /sci/ follows the case of scientism (a term i coined now): a belief that scientific knowledge is all that is required to understand life, the universe, and everything in it.

What this perspective fails to realise, is that Science is not all there is to life, and relying of science alone to understand everything leaves one with an incomplete picture on life, lacking parts or understandings that the following two elements provide.

If you haven't picked it up by now, i am suggesting the holistic lifestyle of the uber-brain.

The first understanding is that of the mind. Indeed a strong mind is the core of any brain, but /si/ seems to have 1 element (science) but lack 2 fundamental elements to a holistic mind: Science, Philosophy, and Spirituality. Now before you atheistic brains ignore this segment, give me an opportunity to explain myself. One does not nessecarily need all three elements in order to have a healthy mental lifestyle, though the spiritual aspect (as unscientific as it may seem) seems to play an important role on the psyche that seems to maintain moral and social balance. Science (as you may already know) is an element to the mind that requires critical thought and curiosity amongst all situations across life, a level of skepticism (and not cynicism) that allows one to find deeper truths about the physical (and sometimes even philosophical) nature of our world. Philosophy being the mother of all sciences allows one to reach for further understandings that science lacks the ability to explain, such as the meaning of life, metaphysics, why we are here, consistency of self, etc.

Philosophy is a vein that allows one to find truths which science cannot find, and complements it. A good example of their complementary nature together is in criminal science: scientists enter a crime scene to gather data about how blood splattered, and what items were there, as well as what DNA material was present, etc. However, the knowledge and statistics of the crime scene itself does not directly reveal the criminal in question. This is where the detective (philosopher) comes in, he infers from the crime scene what took place, how it took place, and who the criminal might be. These two elements working in conjunction allows one to understand what took place, as well as provide evidence to point one in the right direction. This may not be the best analogy, but it is certainly one of the best.
Spirituality provides a deeper sense of fulfillment (and humbleness, a necessity of the scientifically minded) to it’s believer. Though illogical (and capable of both great evil and good), spirituality can provide a greater drive to a person beyond mere mortal desires. It is a bit of an outlier to the other two, but is the mother of philosophy and science, as well as the benefactor of the individual that believes (as ridiculous as it may sound). It tends to act as a answer to many difficult answers in philosophy (when used right), and (at least from my personal experience) provides a deeper sense of satisfaction in the things that you do. I will stop mention of spirituality henceforth so that the atheistic may not become too butt-hurt by its mention.

The second part to the healthy brain lifestyle is that fitness. Now I know that you’re thinking: “how does fitness do anything to make my brain fit? If anything it seems to be a waste of time I could be using to learn about gravitational waves!” Indeed the usage of study time to work on the body’s tone does seem a rather pedestrian notion. Though that may not be the case, as exercise improves overall brain performance and enhances cognitive functioning (http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/17518420801997007). Physical fitness also increases health for the rest of the body, and as evidence shows, physical health impacts brain health; leading to the next topic: diet.
Diet, much like physical fitness, allows the body to function optimally on all fronts and in all systems, which in turn provides a greater benefit to the brain. Have you ever noticed that you retain less information when you eat hot pockets all day, as opposed to a nice ham sandwich with some mandarins? Strange as it seems, eating healthier improves brain function and efficiency amongst individuals (http://www.nature.com/nrn/journal/v9/n7/abs/nrn2421.html). Indeed diet, in combination with fitness and what is to be mentioned, plays a major role in the health and well-being of the mind.
Sleep! To dream! That is an aspiration many of us lack the will to want, yet something crucial for the mind to function as it should. Indeed, sleep it the third and most crucial pillar of the mental lifestyle of a healthy mind. Sleep deprivation has been shown to lead to many problems in daily cognitive function (search: the effects of sleep deprivation on cognitive function), and sleep itself is the core of a healthy mind. Despite this, many find themselves staying up late into the night. To achieve the uber-brain, a regular sleep pattern must be maintained.

In 7th grade, I took an SAT test without preparing for it at all, it was spur-of-the-moment, I knew about it about an hour ahead of time and didn't do any research or anything. I scored higher on it than the average person using it to apply for college in my area.
An IQ test has shown me to be in the 99.9th percentile for IQ. This is the highest result the test I was given reaches; anything further and they'd consider it to be within the margin of error for that test.
My mother's boyfriend of 8 years is an aerospace engineer who graduated Virginia Tech. At the age of 15, I understand physics better than him, and I owe very little of it to him, as he would rarely give me a decent explanation of anything, just tell me that my ideas were wrong and become aggravated with me for not quite understanding thermodynamics. He's not particularly successful as an engineer, but I've met lots of other engineers who aren't as good as me at physics, so I'm guessing that's not just a result of him being bad at it.
I'm also pretty good at engineering. I don't have a degree, and other than physics I don't have a better understanding of any aspect of engineering than any actual engineer, but I have lots of ingenuity for inventing new things. For example, I independently invented regenerative brakes before finding out what they were, and I was only seven or eight years old when I started inventing wireless electricity solutions (my first idea being to use a powerful infrared laser to transmit energy; admittedly not the best plan).
I have independently thought of basically every branch of philosophy I've come across. Every question of existentialism which I've seen discussed in SMBC or xkcd or Reddit or anywhere else, the thoughts haven't been new to me. Philosophy has pretty much gotten trivial for me; I've considered taking a philosophy course just to see how easy it is.
Psychology, I actually understand better than people with degrees.

Hello /sci/

How do I improve my mathematical communication in general?
I always get anxious about explaining too much or too little.
My teacher in statistics told me "someone like you should be able to read and understand what's going on" another teacher said that "someone with no clue in math should be able to read and understand it", or "explain as if you're explaining it to a toddler".

Any help is appreciated.

When I try to explain math to people that don't know anything about it I try to work from examples involving no actual math but that display mathematical concepts and then collapse it down back into the numbers. Things like Flatland are a good example. Anathem was a book that was pretty good at explaining math to the uninitiated as well.

What has higher probability?
Humans visiting another planet in another star system that has life on it?
or
Humans visiting an alternate Earth that has life that evolved a little differently than us.

If the universe is expanding, and the multi verse theory is true, then it may be impossible for aliens to visit our planet, while at the same time there's is an infinity high probability that life from a parallel Earth will visit us here.

As a purely scientific inquiry then human race should definitely be a subspecies, and it's not because purely political reason. The classic question against political correctness is that if all humans are truly truly equal, then why do we need diversity? Insisting on certain diversity threshold means that people are not equal. Biologists have split several species with less difference than differences between human race, see pic related.

Now to counteract /pol/ logic though, to be a member of a certain race with statistically significant desirable attribute doesn't mean that one should be treated differently, or be given more opportunity with respect to other races. For example, IQ is a messy issue and might not be the best test of intelligence, but there is a statistically significant differences in IQ between races. A more testable, biological function is fast twitch muscles and West African in general are more gifted than the rest of the world. Just look at 100m sprint in the olympics, all of the contenders have West African roots. All humans should be treated equally because we have equal capacity to suffer and to feel pain. IQ is kind of arbitrary, why not treat someone differently because they're a member of subgroup with higher propensity for fast twitch muscles (West Africans). How about the proven genetic superiority of Sherpa lungs and capability blood oxygen compared to non-sherpas?

>The Adaptation to High Altitude in Sherpas: Association with the Insertion/Deletion Polymorphism in the Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Gene. Wilderness and Environmental Medicine: Vol. 19, No. 1, pp. 22–29.

we could draw arbitrary differences between race here and there, but at the end of the day, people have about equal pain receptors with respect to their body mass, and have equal capacity to suffer, so we still have to take those interest for consideration and as a result of such consideration we have to treat people more or less equally

yes it's been dunked multipe times.

Paper 1 talks about changes in the human immune system over time. The discussion section even mentions it has nothing to do with human diversity, and the changes in immune system genetics is completely explained by random genetic drift.

Paper 2 talks about correlating self identified race with geographical ancestry and why it doesn't work.

Paper 3 is also about changes in the immune system and certain aspects of embryology. The captain clearly shows the very small Fst distances they are dealing with. The picture in that section is also fake. The last skull is Neanderthal one, not a human one.

Paper 4 talks about the ability to correlated geographic ancestry using more modern and very power statistical methods in bioinformatics. The discussion does mention that this does not imply genetic differences.

The entire middle section is just correlations between college test scores (which aren't even psychometric) and IQ with SEC.

The final section is 100% garbage. Back in 2005 a bunch of people believe they found two genes, MCPH1 and ASPM, that were involved in skull and brain development. After about two years of review it was found they had nothing to do with either and had no influence on IQ, mental disorders, or skull/brain size. A quick google scholar search is all it takes.

These graphs are always made by complete idiots that do not read the sources nor have any read education. They see one graph or statement and think science is on their side. Meanwhile they also believe in the conspiracy theory that the "real science" is being subverted by some conspiracy and that anyway that speaks out is fired. If that were true, none of these paper, which supposedly support their beliefs (but don't), would never have been published. The simply fact is they rely on people to either not check the sources or have no real understanding of the science, and just believe it based on emotion and circlejerking.

>we have this thread every day

Absolutely false. Humans have an Fst of around 0.15. The cutoffs are usually between 0.3-0.4 based on population sizes and geographic/other factors.

Humans have less than 1/10th of the overall genetic diversity of other apes, for example. We are all ten times more closely related to each other than all chimps are to one another.
