read the nag hammadi texts
>>

From Wikipedia:

>The Nag Hammadi library (also known as the "Chenoboskion Manuscripts", or as the "Gnostic Gospels"[1]) is a collection of Gnostic texts discovered near the Upper Egyptian town of Nag Hammadi in 1945. Thirteen leather-bound papyrus codices buried in a sealed jar were found by a local farmer named Muhammed al-Samman.[2]

Sounds pretty cool.

Why is /lit/ so enamored with Gnosticism? Not to be rude to the OP but I see so many threads about it. What is its significance beyond being a fairly esoteric sect that inspired other esoteric sects later on?

/lit/ is for the discussion of all things literature which happens to encompass religion, philosophy, and language. "b-b-but you need to mention the book you are talking about" sure thing faggot if that makes you stop crying.

I don't get why you brainlets struggle with theology and philosophy threads,

Does anyone here take medication for anxiety or depression? I think I should, but honestly I'm scared for how it will impact my critical thinking capabilities. In your experience, has medication hindered your ability to read and write?

Also, feel free to talk about how depression or anxiety has impacted your academic life to this point.

why are there so many religious people on this board? I'm not talking "spiritual" people, i can understand that, but i mean those literal "word of god" types. I assume it's because 4chan makes a nice refuge for dejected people of all kinds and those sorts of ideas are comforting to disenfranchised groups, but at the same time this is a board for "learned", discriminating types who you'd think would would have less tolerance for that kind of hypocrisy...
does this board just attract elitist pseuds of all sorts?
i bet reddit doesnt have this problem.

Right? Haha stupid religious people, I agree we should go to reddit where our fellow atheists are enlightened by their own intelligence and not by some phony god's blessing
>>
Paragraphs start with capital letters. 'I' should always be capitalised.

I think the religion is mostly just people taking the piss, but there is something to be said for the antidepressant quality of rejecting a wholey material worldview.

To get to the point, can anyone recommend me some uber confusing/hard books that if i read for 2 hours a day i would be able to read Shakespeare like a kiddy novel? Also I'm willing to read for 2 days straight in the weekends without sleep or food if it's what it takes

Some background... I need to boost my reading level (e.g. how much detail/information i can retain from reading text) to god tier levels in 2 weeks (for an exam) otherwise i'm saying goodbye to my lifelong dream job. I also need to be able to read quite quickly - exam gives enough time for say 42 seconds per question... e.g. say a typical block is 600 words of stimuli for 3 questions about the text

I've only started reading books with the purpose of getting better about a week ago (charles dickens and another book wings of the dove by henry james) for about 30 minutes a day (i know its shit) and i'm somewhat getting better but i still need to reread texts.

If anyone else experienced a similar position any advice is greatly appreciated

how many pages of a book do you read a day?

i only read like 9-12 pages a day desu. this is because i read paragraphs over and over again trying to memorize what i read
i only do this with non-fiction, not fiction(unless it's hard fiction)

reading 50 pages of non-fiction would make my brain hurt. non-fiction is also very dry and boring. i can't read that many pages of non-fiction unless it's something interest

What are some books that can teach me about Quantum Mechanics? Either nonfiction or fiction works, just something that's engaging (won't demand too much prerequisite knowledge into specific scientific fields) but also actually teaches me something.

Also throwing a line out there for movies (narrative or documentary) but keep it on the DL cause i know the mods here have a loathing for /tv/ but that place is too much of a cesspool to ask

I had an acid trip a few months ago and I saw something I understood but can't explain. I'm honestly just hoping it was just some temporary drug-induced insanity; the only way I can come close to understanding it again is smoking marijuana, but that only hurts my ability to communicate it which gives me hope that it's all just nothing.

What scares me more than anything else is that I might be on to something.
Tonight I cried because I was afraid of that possibility so much.

Regardless, I'd like to gain a greater understanding of how the very small affects the very large.

If I'm right, than pic very much related. It explains everything. Just not that well.

If the humanist tradition is a a thirst for knowledge it's not unreasonable to look outside of European writers. It becomes a problem when inclusivity superceeds worth and, from what I understand and what other threads have discussed, that doesn't happen to the degree some conservatives describe. Ultimately, most English and humanities students aren't going into academia so their programs prepare them for the workforce. I imagine their example for UCLA is a misrepresentation of the curriculum. They likely have requirements for Brit lit or electives which can be completed with a Shakespeare course but they also require gender, race, and other courses more specifically. I guess the test would be to look at their curriculum and compare the number of "traditional" humanities requirements to new, progressive ones.

I have a BA in history and there was definitely an inordinate focus on "marginalized voices." I read A Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass three (3) times but never the Federalist Papers. We probably were assigned a few excerpts, but still.

Hi. This is a poem called "Unholy Matrimony."
It's about the time when I was raped by a Christian.
Now, I know what you're about to say.
"A real Christian wouldn't have--"
STOP, STOP, I don't want to hear it--
Just remember, it's not cheating if it's God.
Just like it's not rape if it's God.
I wonder what God's pickup line with Mary was?
"I've never seen an angel fly so low?"
No, let's be honest, God is really one of those "scream and I'll kill you" types, isn't he.
Your words were as empty as the tomb on Easter morning,
And my heart was as naive as fair Midian.
You are the Serpent to my Eve
And the God to my Mary.

I'm very sorry that you were raped but Mary was not physically impregnated, hence the Immaculate Conception. Also, as told in the Gospel of Luke, Mary consents to carry Jesus.
>>
>>9736969
God asked Mary friend.
>>
>>9737098
Mary's creation/birth without original sin is the immaculate conception, her impregnation with Jesus is not. But your general sentiment is correct, the poem is blasphemous.

Mine is picrelated, I was kinda new shit to me even though at the time I read it I was familiar with de Sade, Burroughs, Matthew Stokoe, Dennis Cooper.
Can you provide an example of a much more hardcore book by some other author?
