>Finish reading a Metaphysics introduction book.
>Learn about a bunch of theories about time, causation, particulars and possibility.
>None of the theories can be explained properly and are easily disputed.
>Its literally just "People don't think it be like it is, but it do."
>The author concludes that metaphysics is literally useless.

Why is metaphysics given so much significance again?

>none of the theories can be explained and are easily disputed
A metaphysical theory can be neither proven nor disputed, hence it is metaphysical. In addition: no scientific theory can be proven or disputed; a hypothesis is always a hypothesis, never a definite proof. To conclude with a question and an attempt of an answer: What is then the difference between a metaphysical and scientific theory? My answer would be that the only criterion to distinguish between science and metaphysics is how useful the theory is, useful in terms of how well it predicts.

One more remark: it is beyond depressing to accept that no theory can be definitely proven.

>In addition: no scientific theory can be proven or disputed; a hypothesis is always a hypothesis, never a definite proof.
Yes it can, we believe in germ theory etc for a reason other than just "it be like it is". If our medical practitioners etc don't wash their hands before performing surgery, countless of people will die as a result. This is proven and testable, this says something about the reality which we inhabit (me and everyone else anyway if you're going to start denying reality). Likewise, you can disprove theories by presenting evidence that's completely incompatible with them being true, here's a list:

I've read many books, but I'm ignorant. Anyone have a chart of general knowledge? Not only philosophy and literature, but also history, science, politics, etc. A sort of "summa"

Knowledge is a meme created by humans. Everyone is ignorant, some people just know how to express their ignorance better than others

>An artist should be able to write a novel in a few weeks, write a short story on a plane journey, sketch a landscape, sing in front of an audience, perform stand up comedy, act in a play, speak multiple languages, play and compose music, act as a competent cinematographer, critique a leftist, show the facts to a rightist, write news reports from a warzone, sculpt something life size, seduce an attractive young woman, placate an angry brute, be the life and soul of an upscale party, and dance better than 95 % of the population. Specialisation is for STEM autists.

You know who I'm parodying but you know this is true and you know you are trying to squirrel your way in to an obscure corner of literature, hoping to eke out a place for yourself, in some haughty place above the masses yet too scared to live among them for any time at all.

At first I thought the original was Rothfuss, then realized it was Heinlein, and ultimately concluded there is a small to nonexistent difference between those two anyway.

How do stirnerites reconcile with the fact that people are completely helpless the first 10-15 years of their lives, and rely on selfless love and help of their parents and society to survive into adult years? How can they possibly choose egoism over philanthropy?

When science or technology is a major theme in a work is it automatically classified as science fiction, and has there been any notable non-philosophical literature which handled the theme of scientific progress positively?

Do writers of literary fiction tend to be suspicious of empiricism?
2 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>

do you mean a positive view of scientific progress?
it's difficult to speak for writers of literary fiction at large, but empiricism has a tendency to bar imagination of the average man, or the man not intellectually inclined. it acts as a barrier when employed by the malicious. empricism in the humanities is anathema because (i hate to say it) a sense of equality has pervaded the philosophy of the arts. if one man is greater at expression, it tends to invalidate the expression of other men. competition in what has suddenly become an institutional enterprise is something of a faux pas. there is hope in individualism and grassroots expression, however. i think there are plenty of empirically inclined authors out there ready to show superiority. i think society as we know it inherently respects this superiority, despite its regrets individually. individuality in this sense has a duality of burden and praise.

Can one be wise without experience? What makes one wise?

wisdom is separate from knowledge in that knowledge is the reiteration of that which is held as common fact, whereas wisdom is the expression of truth despite societal interference. wisdom is why certain things resonate with us even when it's written a thousand years ago.
>>
Wisdom is what you get when you combine perceptiveness with careful reflection. You can be very worldly, knowledgeable, and witty without ever approaching wisdom, if you lack careful observation and reflection of the world around you.
>>
>>9859565
Pretty much this. Observation, reflection, an ability to profit by one's experiences, an almost uncanny predisposition to be fair, just.

FAUSTUS. A surfeit of deadly sin, that hath damned both
body and soul.

SECOND SCHOLAR. Yet, Faustus, look up to heaven, and remember
mercy is infinite.

FAUSTUS. But Faustus' offence can ne'er be pardoned: the serpent
that tempted Eve may be saved, but not Faustus. O gentlemen,
hear me with patience, and tremble not at my speeches! Though
my heart pant and quiver to remember that I have been a student
here these thirty years, O, would I had never seen Wittenberg,
never read book! and what wonders I have done, all Germany can
witness, yea, all the world; for which Faustus hath lost both
Germany and the world, yea, heaven itself, heaven, the seat of
God, the throne of the blessed, the kingdom of joy; and must
remain in hell for ever, hell. O, hell, for ever! Sweet friends,
what shall become of Faustus, being in hell for ever?

SECOND SCHOLAR. Yet, Faustus, call on God.

FAUSTUS. On God, whom Faustus hath abjured! on God, whom Faustus
hath blasphemed! O my God, I would weep! but the devil draws in
my tears. Gush forth blood, instead of tears! yea, life and soul!
O, he stays my tongue! I would lift up my hands; but see, they
hold 'em, they hold 'em?

ALL. Who, Faustus?

FAUSTUS. Why, Lucifer and Mephistophilis. O gentlemen, I gave
them my soul for my cunning!

ALL. O, God forbid!

FAUSTUS. God forbade it, indeed; but Faustus hath done it: for
the vain pleasure of four-and-twenty years hath Faustus lost
eternal joy and felicity. I writ them a bill with mine own blood:
the date is expired; this is the time, and he will fetch me.

FIRST SCHOLAR. Why did not Faustus tell us of this before,
that divines might have prayed for thee?

FAUSTUS. Oft have I thought to have done so; but the devil
threatened to tear me in pieces, if I named God, to fetch me
body and soul, if I once gave ear to divinity: and now 'tis
too late. Gentlemen, away, lest you perish with me.

SECOND SCHOLAR. O, what may we do to save Faustus?

FAUSTUS. Talk not of me, but save yourselves, and depart.

THIRD SCHOLAR. God will strengthen me; I will stay with Faustus.

FIRST SCHOLAR. Tempt not God, sweet friend; but let us into the
next room, and pray for him.

FAUSTUS. Ay, pray for me, pray for me; and what noise soever
you hear, come not unto me, for nothing can rescue me.

because he willingly gave his soul to satan, not that he had no will to beck repent, no, he plotted his own dement. lucifer is a wily excuse, my dear friend, no infinite mercy would refuse a man who sold a mere soul that was never his property. no, his own spiteful remonstrance restricted his plea for repentance.
>>
That is whats happening in the superior Goethe version
>>
>>9859419
Why would he plot his own demise? And why would he say things like "O my God, I would weep! but the devil draws in
my tears. [...] O, he stays my tongue! I would lift up my hands; but see, they hold 'em, they hold 'em?"?

What is that book series where kids go around hunting monsters and stuff? Each monster dropped a gem or something that they need.

The inside of the front cover has a map of the world and I think where the ground of kids has traveled.

The author is a woman too, if I'm not mistaken. The series had a spin-off series when I dropped reading it when I was a kid.
