>reading some self help book
>author talks about how religion is dangerous and how you need to accept yourself
>The next page he starts talking about how it is important to be moral and just
LMAO
These people crack me up, like you cucks can't have it both ways.
For you out there that read more than one book at once: How do you do that? Don't you mess up the plots? Or you read one fiction and one non-fiction? Don't you end up reading only the book you like more?
>>9857075
I think I'm starting to dislike thought.
>>9857075
One fiction, one non-fiction, one short stories/essays. It's really not that hard, you probably had a couple more subjects and books a day in babby school even if you went to a US shithole.
>tfw to intelligent too read more than 5 pages a day

Does anyone else find Marcus Aurelius' Meditations are like a TED Talk?
I thought he was supposed to be a great philosopher emperor but it feels like I'm reading a self-righteous self-help book.
Yeah it's literally /r9k/ the book.
>>9857041
It's literally a self-help book, it's Marcus' notes he wrote to help himself keep a stoic attitude. It wasn't originally intended for publication.
>>9857078
>It's literally a self-help book
Lol'd at this but also yeah its true.
>Spend your adult life working your ass to become the top engineer in Europe, compiling an astounding fortune
>Spend the rest of your life trying to groom your children to be intellectual gods
>Your retard gay son gives your whole fortune away so that he could roleplay as "le aescetic wise philosopher"
>this same retard faggot becomes a school teacher after pretending to "solve all of philosophy" so that he can role-play as a poor person, while simultaneously writing angry letters to Bertrand Russell shitting on poor people and calling them subhuman and shit like that
>Bitch slaps and knocks out a poor little girl
>retard son then spends the rest of his life roleplaying as "le humble Christian - but wouldn't you know, I'm also secretly a godly philosopher, haha look how superior I am, and yet I'm still just a humble guy like you!"
>>9857036
>tfw he bought his fame
>tfw he only managed to impress hacks like Russell and Carnap (who did not respect him as a logician anyway)
That's it. If you've got billions in your bank, and if you're somewhat brilliant, you can buy your way into philosophical immortality. Fair.
Is there anything awesomer than fantasy novels? Do people who are serious about the fantasy genre ever have non-exciting lives? Is it some kind of developmental stimulant? Why are they so mature?
I'm not studying philosophy. Is there anything I should read before I tackle this book? Do I stand a chance of understanding at least the gist of it without a few years of study under my belt? I've always seen it as one of the behemoths of philosophical works so I'm a bit intimidated, but I want to try anyway. Should I also read Critique Of Practical Reason or is that one not as essential? Any advise?
>inb4startwiththegreeks
I've read Aristotle's Metaphysics, if it helps.

I literally read Thus Spoke Zarathustra in my sophomore year of high school because my teacher said I'd like it. You'll be fine. Just don't try to read through it like a novel. If you're not taking your time and seriously asking yourself "what does it mean", you're not doing it right.
>>9857024
Read rationalists like Descartes and Leibniz.
Read empiricists like Hume and Locke.
Hello, /lit/. I decided in an effort to seriously teach myself to write better within a year, I will first start by learning to read and write poetry & prose. Any suggestions on where to start? Thanks.
Any books you'd expect to see on a high school curriculum.
>>9857044
I mean, I guess I can try the ones I didn't have the mispleasure of being forced to read. But I'd be more interested in something more, interesting.
Hey fags, I've begun reading the Illiad (Fitzgerald translation) after finishing Mythology by Hamilton, and "How to Read a Book", and I want to get the most out of it. I am seeking something like pic related, but specifcally for (or at least including) an analysis of the Illiad.

"iliad, or the poem of force" by simone weil
Was it real ?
uh yeah sure why not
Its stil real for me!

I used to frequent Strieber's forum and read his wife's blog until she passed away. I still don't know what to think of them. Obviously it's been a long con but Communion was too weird, long and idiosyncratic to not be enamored by it. I remember the account of Alexander the Great having a close encounter of the 3rd kind well. Also Strieber's repressed memories of the aliens instructing him to build a satellite as a child.
Join us while /lit/ takes on /mu/ in an hour and a half
A match initially thought to have championship implications has a totally new narrative. Can a /mu/ squad destined for the babbies send off their resigning managers with a swan song befitting of their board? Can a young /lit/ squad make their first Elite Knockouts since the Winter of 2015? One match settles it all. This is the Summer Cup.
