Hey /lit/, I was wondering if any of you knew of any books that produce or talk about the onset of existential dread.

If anyone wants to know why then get ready for > muh blog

When I was about 13 I started to feel existential dread, nothing seemed to make this gnawing feeling disappear. I would dread sunset.

I would find myself longing to go to school, for a distraction. Eventually the dread went away, but I would become depressed in my late teen years and the first few years of my twenties.

The alleviation of dread seemed to occur when I started to focus on my school work. It was still there I suppose, beneath the surface, but I managed to get my life arranged in a manner that I would be content with relatively long days of study.

When I got to university, my living situation was terrible, and I was under a lot of stress, to the point that I was overwhelmed with existential dread, depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts

I've been on antidepressants for a few years now, and I've gotten into a stable living arrangement this last 5 months or so. I used to spend time just trying to distract myself from the dread, now I can barely feel it. I would spend long hours distracting myself with vidya, tv, and Internet. Now I want to revive the drive I had when I was younger, before all the stress.

I used to watch very little TV and spend little time on the internet, I didn't listen to music, and rarely podcasts. I would play sports several times a week.

I would spend time studying math, or biology, or chemistry. Or reading fiction, or practicing chess. Sometimes I would ride the bus alone, with no source of entertainment, and just think.

Now I find it difficult to be away from any source of "connectedness". I wonder if I need to produce the feeling of existential dread, as a driving force for change. I've been getting into meditation lately, and it seems to improve my situation. I seem to be able to distinguish a feeling of stress whenever I start to use my phone or computer. In all honesty, i just want to get some more control over my life. I've been trying to resolve negative feelings and (in general) desires. I used to be able to listen to my lectures with ease, and without much need for notes. Before my prescription of antidepressants I found it difficult to concentrate for even a quarter of a lecture, or even read for 10 minutes without getting headaches.

I'm working my way back there, but I miss the ability to make these fluid intuitive insights and to see combinations on a chess board.

Existential dread is really easy to overcome.
Whenever I need to judge what I'm doing or decide what to do, I ask myself:
>What would an old guy in a miserable, ugly, poorly maintained retirement home who never sees his family and friends and will die all alone choose to do I he were me?

Now it's simply a matter of keeping the activities that Mr. Senior Self does to a minimum.

Example:
>Sit inside all day to browse 4chan
>Meh, probably something an old person would do
>Go out into town?
>I never see depressed old people in town so it must be a good decision to go

Tl;dr: do the opposite of what a lonely senior citizen in a retirement home would do. Also, read the Greeks.

Wow almost got double trips

To illustrate my point, let me tell you of a man who is in his 90s who lives in rural France. He's repeatedly said that he dreaded the idea of going to a retirement home because he would have nothing to do there: "I would probably die pretty soon after arriving at the retirement home." So instead he still lives at home, taking care of his chickens, rabbits and the vegetables in his garden. He constantly engages with his community and mows the grass in his huge lawn with a sickle like a boss. How many people in their 90s can say they regularly use a sickle or even could? Heck, how many people in their 90s can say they live at home?

Give yourself mountains to climb, OP: a garden to work in, a park to walk through, a room to clean, a flower to water, a cafe to frequent, a language to learn, etc.

The Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins.
Put aside the fedora meme, Dawkins is an impressive biologist with a gift for explaining concepts in a simple yet efficient way. He isn't an embarrassment unless he attempts to venture into the humanities.

Does writing have to have a deeper meaning? Im writing some short stories, some are about something, some have ironic twists, but the story i'm working on now is just a meaningless Sci-fi romp

Some privateers steal a macguffin, then a ship from another planets millitary shoots them down, they crash and are stranded in the middle of a planets ocean, they are attacked by a giant squid and fight it off, then the millitary that attacked them sends another ship after them, the hero throws some explosives into the ocean and it baits the squid to come back and just totally wreck the millitary thats attacking them. they take one of the ships left over at the battle and fly off (This
is also the first chapter in a book I'm going to write in peices, I don't have a grand outline for the book, just the next 2-3 chapters ahead, kind of making it up as I go)

no deeper meaning, no morale, no twist, just a, hopefully, fun adventure

At first I thought that wasan't good enough, but then I remember how much I love the John Carter series, it's just pulp, it's fun

TLDR: Does ALL writing have to have deeper meaning and be great literary work? or can it just be fun sometimes?

if it doesn't comment on the discourses of power which exist in present day america it's worthless

any pretension for deepness is wrongheaded

thinking in aesthetic terms rather than understanding the current class conflict and power dynamics and working to destabilize it is immoral

so, go ahead, OP, go ahead and make your little book, but keep account of this How good a book is is not dependent or reprimanded or landed on discussing race relations but on quality of story, character and creation of an intriguing aesthetical experience

The problem i have with this premise is that it's entirely action. Like, cheap, thriller, hollywood level action. Not my cup of tea. But you seem to be writing for a plebeian audience, so good luck to you.

Imo short stories don't have to be deep, literary, recursive / multi-layered experiences a la Borges, but they do have to be thoughtful and written in a charming style. See Julio Cortazar and Lydia Davis--look for their flash fiction. Cronopios and Famas

In essence, you're describing asceticism. And it's okay to do as long as its engaging. It might be a bit unrewarding when it comes to prose, but I do enjoy it when it comes to poetry:

Today was a mild day for so late in February.
Spring sang early by a windy tributary,
and played away the cold decay of December.
There was a green leaf applause for all to remember:

All the red-breasted robins chirping wildly,
in hopes of calling new love blindly.
And all of the dogs who's lonely, friendly barking
echo into the falling curtain of night.

Then in my house seat I preside
by the window open wide,
as a distant rushing wind
and bellowing train blend
into a calming sort of static.

I watch the street with vague intent,
hoping to notice nothing at present,
while a cool air gently plays
with my hair and brightness
of my marijuana cigarette.

Yes, especially long series. Like the Hornblower, Aubrey/Maturin, Bolitho, and good ol' Sharpe's Rifles. Some of the very latter I have since putchased used, however.

I´ve read through Kierkegaard when i was 17 and want to start with him again. Right now iam reading "Kierkegaard" by T.W. Adorno and its really good though a bit challenging.

Does anybody have good second-literature-tips on Kierkegaard, which could support my understanding on him?

Honestly, I think you should give a try to Kierkegaard's works, as his style is not as unnecessary complicated as Heidegger, for example. Even though it can be hard sometimes, I can not belive that someone could explain you better what he intended. The struggle is not to understand the language, but to analyze the situation he gives you, to compare it to reality, as the main interest of his philosophy is the human being.
>>

as i said i read through his main works when i was younger, i also read some pages of Either/Or again, so iam very familiar with his works, but i want to dig deeper in various interpretations of hid works like the Adonro one.

Is The Art Of War a pleb, patrician, or just average book? I snagged it for 5 bucks at a bookstore a couple days ago.

So far I like it but it seems a little hippie-ish despite being about something as serious and brutal as war. It also doesn't seem particularly deep, although I guess the insights it provides were probably a lot more profound when it was originally written.

It's still neatly poetic.

I tried reading through it, but didn't really get me the first time, I might try reading it again though. I was sort of looking for the same sort of experience that the Book of Five Rings gave, detailing the attitudes of how a warrior should think, and act, and stuff like that.
Also, at least in my version of the book, I didn't like the huge introduction at the beginning, like I get they are trying to provide a background, and give some insight into the times of when the book was written, but if I was so interested in that, I would research that instead. Just give me the basic jist of Sun Tzu, maybe some recommended further reading, and that's it.
I do think it is worth reading eventually, but right now it was just a huge turn-off for me.

Classical Chinese is terse by nature. It's meant to be read along side commentary. I'd recommend the John Minford translation for those who want to read in English.

Does YA literature hold a purpose? Is any of it good? Should literature be bound by age?

Most of it seems pretty bad, even if it deals with concepts that are tangentially interesting. Of course, the main draw is that it gets youngsters to read.

>Does YA literature hold a purpose?
Not quite sure what you mean. It's a genre that youngsters read.
>Is any of it good?
I enjoyed a few good ya books in my early teens. Stuff like "Holes", "Refugee boy", and "Harry Potter". I don't think I would appreciate them now though.
>Should literature be bound by age?
Yes. 10 year olds who read "Moby Dick" are doing it in vain, and adults should try to steer away from YA desu.

What was the purpose of the lyrics from I Want to Tell You in the exchange between Hal and Orin?

Why does there have to be a purpose?

Well specific song lyrics in lieu of regular speech suggest their is some meaning behind them - heard a theory that it's actually the wraith of Himself and Hal is just assuming it to be Orin but not entirely sold.

Reminder that the purpose of these game-specific AI projects are to test and develop ever-increasingly general systems. To basically formulate general-purpose learning algorithms that can acclimate to anything. This one and others simply derive information through vision. Creating models for success through what it sees, over time. It does not have access to extra data or even direct access to usual data. This particularly one got to this point through battling against itself, probably for millions of matches. It came to strategies/tactics common in human players, then brutally outmatched them. It quickly adapts to anything confusing or unknown, it means you have a small window of opportunity through using something it has not encountered, but it will quickly infer from itself and your approach as to what is happening, meaning your brief advantage fades nearly faster than you can use it. It and others will almost certainly be integrated in for human training purposes in the future, not just in this game but in everything.
