I can't really visualize the exterior of buildings/interior layouts, so I get lost whenever a description appears, and even more if it's integral to the story. Am I a brainlet?

A bit off topic but do you senpais laminate your books? I have laminated a couple of mine, and it looks pretty good. It also makes them last longer.

>>
I only laminate specific pages. I actually do some bookbinding as a hobby, so I hand-laminate them with my own mix of plastic and then restitch them into the book. It's fun. It feels weird to imagine the laminated pages of these books enduring when the books themselves, and my own dead body, will have long since rotted away. I think about that a lot.

I do that with my textbooks, otherwise not really

i did specifically say i thought his writing was fine (not my cup of tea) but rather that i just didn't much like the themes he writes on. and i didn't like his brand of perversion.

What is photoreading?

Hello /lit/. I'm not a regular here so apologies if this kind of post isn't allowed or is frowned upon.

Does anyone know where I'd be able to find The Norton Anthology of English Literature (Ninth Edition) Volume 1? I've found the eighth edition but ideally I need the ninth.

Thanks in advance.

Hey /lit/, I've never been a reader but now I want to start reading more for some reasons. My problem is, I can't get myself to read and even when I start reading i get bored or distracted too easily, what do I do?
8 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Read more often. Do you have to rest after 10 minutes of reading? Then take a 30 minute break and then read for another 10 minutes. Rinse and repeat.

Reminder: no one is innately good at reading for extended periods of time, just as no one is innately good at basketball. You train yourself to do it -- you build the skills, you build endurance, you build critical thinking, and so on.
>>
>>9883130
Ok, i'll try, thank you good anon
>>
learn about self discipline, also ask yourself why are you deciding to do this thing that has distracted you rather than read. Not now, but when you experience it. You'll start to automatically go back to reading after a while.

>The melancholy percussion that paces life, dotted with fantastic moments of brass, will eventually end with applause and the next piece's introduction.

>>
Melancholy percussion seems off. How about strings instead? Or do you insist on life's ensemble being a brass band rather than a full orchestra? Is this a military thing, like life is war?

Next, dotted with ... brass might be more effective if you move the punch of the drums here. Something like 'punctuated by cymbals' if you want to maintain the copper/brass coloring.

Then, lives tend to fade to a single note then pause, trailing off rather than rupturing in applause, so I'm not sure about this bit.

But the idea is there, and it's good, so keep it up. Is this the first sentence of a story or a mediation on music/life, or is it a standalone maxim?

Thanks for replying; I was asleep, hence my late response.

Admittedly the instrument types were selected due to me not having much knowledge of music. I figured that to pace a life, percussion would be optimal, due to it involving drums and the like. I chose brass for the "dotted fantastic" moments because I love the amount of emotion that brass can add to a piece.

The "end with applause" portion was to represent a funeral, because applauses tend to be short, just like a funeral is. The movement onto the next piece is to showcase how quickly people move on, and possibly even forget you.

It's just a standalone maxim.

Thank you for your comments and suggestions!

In the realm of the mental world, obviously yes. Because you couldn't ponder it otherwise. Not necessarily in the physical or Platonic mathematical world though.

Working any kind of shitty jobs. Waiter, lumberjack, mechanic, etc. In the past, writers worked these shitty jobs to scrape by while they wrote their masterpieces. Nowadays, they can get a professor position or teach writing. A lot of modern writers lack the kind of human experience gained through these low class jobs, and their art suffers as a result. Melville never would've written Moby Dick if he had been a English professor or a writing lab instructor.
