What sort of themes, story beats and general all-round concepts do you like to see (or would like to see) in science fiction?
The less derivative bullshit, the better.
more aliens that are actually aliens in the sense of being products of evolution (hence hyper-predatorial and competitive), and it not being necessary that they are soy-loving peaceful trekkies whose politics mimics some fat purple haired weirdo from bushwick

What's your opinion on this book. I bought it a while back after seeing it bandied around some.
I'm reading it right now. It's illuminating in most pages, and filled with good hints aside the reading.
Some anon will tell you that most of the book is filler, it's true, but it's not useless crap, it's just repetition of the core concepts of intelligent reading.
The actual application of intelligent reading is not so easy as it sounds, it's a lot of work. Any anon wants to share some experiences?

I was actually thinking about this book yesterday. I'm going through Schopenhauer, and I realized that I am not paying close enough attention to what is being said - I will not remember these words for as long as I should. I'm interested in other anon's experiences if it indeed helped them. Is it a meme?
>>9887028
I didn't realize that there was actually a good reason for skimming a book other than cramming for a test or pretending to read a book

Going to take a shit and then go to the gym, I think. Life is beautiful. I love it, so therefore I end up treating it cruelly. I can't stop taking shit. I'm going to the gym now.

My shit record player doesn't function anymore I need to get a new one. I want to head out and walk the abandoned tunnel today but I'm busy as shit and I won't find anyone on short notice cause all my friends think they're busy as shit too. I'm gonna go code for a while.

Finally, some rain. I hate the sun and I hate summer. Can't wait for fall to drown this plague of flies and tourists.
Thoughts - 8/13/2017
I had a dream last night where the world was destroyed, as it was destroyed I was scared, scared of the judgment God would give to me.
I have resolved to understand that no man should fear death, but instead openly embrace it.
Live a righteous life, do good by others first, and by yourself second, follow God's commandments, and there shall be no reason to fear death.
I had a dream last night where I sucked my own dick. It was good.
>>9886865
Did you swallow like a good little reader?
I dreamed myself riding a bycicle at night and I kept seeing different constellations untill I didn't see any constellations and the sky just changed color and pattern every second. I had to get off my bike to hug a tree for some reason.
Beginner's book introducing aesthetic philosophy? Preferably not a book including general introductions to various philosophical subjects, just on aesthetics?
>>9886819
longcat is the definition of aesthetic.
>>9886824

Fine. Here you go.
What's Barbey d'Aurevilly's best? Les Diaboliques? L'Ensorcelée?
>>9886817
depends what languages you can read. Obviously Les Diaboliques, but the novel Une vieille maîtresse is also quite good.
To be honest, just read Villiers instead.
>>9886895
In french, my man. What's Villiers best then?
You have 10 seconds to prove why this guy isn't 100% correct.
Pro tip: you can't.

What does /lit/ think of Parfit and his reductionist theory of personal identity?
>>9886666
There you go again, asking /lit/ about something that actually requires reading and thinking instead of mindless repetition of memes and witticisms. You're a fool.

I wonder what will happen to this board when Petersonism dies in this board

Either flourishes or goes to shit
The thread of absurdity. Probably not many have heard of such a philosophy as absurdism. Life itself is absurd and it is a fact. In this context, you can post absurd literature or your own creation.
Franz Kafka is a great example.

Ok so, is analytic philosophy all pseudo-mathematical garbage, or not? I forgot, can someone remind me again?
Yes.
All analytic philosophers would do well to go back and review Aristotle. Just because a permavirgin claims something is logically consistent does not make it true or (worse) a meaningful analogy.
Now it just more generally means in a methodological sense ordinary language vocabulary and autistically narrow articles of inquiry in an article or book.
Though, I unironically think they have put out the most interesting works on metaphysics and aesthetics in the 21st century so far.
>>9886595
I should screenshot this post and put it on /r/badphilosophy.
I'm not even an analytic, but any first year logic courses (either a critical reasoning or formal logic) in a philosophy department will teach you the difference between logical consistency, truth, and analogy (among many other topics). Pretty sure this is something any philosophy major, who isn't a dumbass, isn't going to mess up by inferring from or conflating these, and says more about your own misconceptions and status signalling about philosophy than anything.
Never finished reading a fiction book in my entire life, where do I start?

my diary desu

Don't think I don't know what you're doing. Finish that book now before I have to take it back

Let's say I've a book I want to scan, and few resources. What would offer the best results? I've a scanner, camera, and pdf programs to work with. Scanner seams obvious, but it's aggressive to the book, so I'm thinking of just photographing the pages and throwing them through ocr, any advices doing that, or anything else?
>>9886462
There are apps for your phone that will help with this. Camscanner is the one that I use but I'm sure they're all the same really. Find a way to keep the phone elevated and stationary and you'll get through it in no time.
>>9886462
Ive done this before. I had to rip the data of a printed directory for work. I sawed off the binding, and put it into an industrial grade scanner like they have at kinkos or most universities.
Then I mailed myself the pdf, and used ABBYY FineReader (which i pirated)

Stumbled on this. Might go building the cardbox one.
I want ready some good sci-fi books. Can you help me ? List your favorite.
the inverted world, by christopher priest
the forever war, by joe haldeman
these 2 have a decent chance of being enjoyed by someone who just asks for good sci-fi books (but you could still shed some light on your tastes)
Thank you. I will check them. My experience with sci-fi is doesn't exist. I read only (fantasy) Eragon books and some other.
*I was reading
Polite reminder this is one of the greatest writers in the history of Literature. I am not memeing or provoking anyone, his writings always bring tears to my eyes. His theoretical prose is not theoretical prose, but poetry. His clarion style is mind-blowing, like nothing else I've ever read. Every writer who came after him did nothing but pursue his example, one way or another; every writer who came after him is just an implication of his work. Without him, there would be no science fiction, no cyberpunk, no accelerationism. If you have only read the Manifesto of Futurism believing that's all (which means you are reasoning with someone else's head) you are missing 99% of the incredible beauty of this amazing poet.

dude war is cool lol!!
Pretty great cosplay desu
Variant 1:
Write a lot. Even if the result is shit, the next one will be better.
Variant 2:
Do a lot of research and reading. Write rarely, but when you do, do it good.
Which side do you pick, /lit/? I have finished my first major story a few weeks back and don't like it anymore. I've got a new idea, but am hesitant to start for fear it will be mediocre or bad again.
>>9886314
Neither.
Write a lot, but do a lot of research.
