It is rather crudely hidden misanthropy; basically the caterpillar stands for mankind's relentless greed and extreme consumption of natural resources. It is not for the faint hearted.

Has reading made you more empathetic to others?

For me, personally, no. While there are times when I am reading that a particular passage stirs up something within me, makes me joyful and inspired, while I feel some sort of connection to a rooted, abstract notion of humanity and the history of humanity, I generally feel a vague, ambient disdain for the people I am surrounded by daily. Their emotional impotence, their opportunistic selfishness, their complacency.

Maybe I'm only agitated because these are some of the things I hate in myself and am constantly seeking to eradicate. But regardless, at the end of the day, I take issue with the fact that this is the way I feel and wish to be better. I try to look for the good in people and I try to be good myself, but I'm starting to question literature's capacity to truly open the heart and mind. Even among ourselves, among people who also read, we are predisposed to hatred, frustration, impatience, negativity, pessimism.

How do we change this without turning away from modern life, from reality? Surely, so much literature inadvertently encourages us to do just this, to turn away, to reach toward and engage in a life beyond life.

I'd like to hear your thoughts and feelings. Are there any books that speak to this sentiment?

This is what happens when life gives you a tiny dick.

Do you not now have a greater trust in your fellow human to sometimes have a rich and full inner life? Extending from this, maybe you can have a degree of certainty that the Other is in there and have receptors to sensation, hopes, dreams, pain, suffering? Great authors have come to task to prove through the act of writing that consciousness exists in them as authors in some way similar to your own and people deserve your, at least, attempt to emphasize because you have a capacity to imagine the feelings of what it would be like if you were in the convergence of potentiality they are currently in. Pull your head out of your ass.

What does /lit/ think about Robert Frost? I know he's basically high school-core but I think he's breddy gud.
6 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Outside his core works he's enjoyable. He's mostly highschool core because he works on such an unadorned level it's easy to simplify. He's a very comfy read.
>>
>>9930126
He's fantastic. He has a simple surface, but when you read him under the surface, and start linking his poems together, he gets better and better.
>>
>>9930170
Unlike the other modernist he hid his erudition in his poem instead of laying it bare on the surface.
He was a poet who wanted to write poems not just for other elitely educated poets, but also for the common man. That's what makes his poems so great, they can be enjoyed on a surface level by Plebs as well as deeper levels by patricians.
The only people that don't like him are the people in the middle that are too knowledgeable to enjoy the surface but not knowledgeable enough to dive deeper.

He is also one of the few modernists that mostly wrote in metered verse, and his meter is expertly used to emphasize the meaning and mood of the poem. His figurative language is done well, and not overdone. I love his use of synecdoche.

His pastoral poems are maximum comfy.

MS Word will frequently suggest that I change things such as "as long as" to "if" or "the majority of" to "most of"
Is this just me getting free English lessons or Microsoft imposing their syntactical opinions on me?
Should I not use word?

That sounds annoying. Turn it off.
>>
>>9930123
Lowering wordiness often clarifies writing so it's more stylistic than anything else. I've known professors who would deduct points for filler phrases while others recognize it as a part of a persons style. Just don't abuse those phrases and you're fine.

Also I haven't read it. Literally judging a book by its cover.

Pagan stories
>external struggle, action figure and fairytale style conflict

Biblical stories
>internal struggle, moral, psychological and spiritual conflict

Anyone else notice this? It is a bit of a generalization of course and is much less applicable to Greek drama, but seems like the overall case. Even pic related (Orthodox icon of Jacob struggling with God, which earns him the name Israel) reads more like a mystical description of an internal struggle .

Consequences in the Bible seldom have to do with cunning or physical prowess, they spring directly from existential dilemmas

There should be a level DH7, where, instead of refuting, you show that the other's conclusion actually feeds back into your premises, or that your argument somehow comprehends the other's.

Discuss stories you're trying to write, ideas, or advice on writing in general
14 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
Discussing the ideas and narratives releases chemicals in your brain that make you feel like you've already told the story (because in a way you have) and make it very difficult to actually write the thing.
I advise against it.

Never posted here before, Im a /pol/ac/k/ but I would like some honest criticism on a scifi story I'm writing. I have absolutely no formal education of any kind.
This is just a very small excerpt but hopefully it gives you an idea of the environment I'm trying to create.

B.O.A.R.D.

>Battalion Ordanince Assault & Reconnaissance Delivery

>After the naval engagement at Remiter in 2142, a need for disrupting and engaging an enemy flagship beyond its engagement range was noted by the USSC. A contract for a boarding device capable of delivering a squad of marines (16 personnel) to an enemy warship was submitted to the public. Tycron Heavy Industry Orbital was awarded the contract. The BOARD is capable of delivering a vehicle to an enemy vessel at ranges of 1.37Ls, beyond the ranges of almost all rail accelerators and thermal weapons currently fielded by the rebellion. It is also capable of launching ECMs, chaff, and thermal sinks to disrupt missiles and point defense systems that would attempt to intercept the BOARD. Before impact the BOARD rapidly decelerates with large forward facing directional explosives as well as two stage shaped charge that breaches the enemy hull. After delivery the cargo of marine shock troopers can engage the crew of the ship, conduct sabatoge, and other combat actions against the boarded ship. In VR simulations and war games BOARD systems are deployed in a salvo of 10 or more, delivering at least a platoon sized (60 personnel) combat contingent to various systems of the enemy vessel, with the priority target usually being the bridge, but engineering and weapons platforms are also targets of priority. BOARD systems can be intercepted by missiles, CIWS, and thermal weapons, with an average loss rate of 40%. However Naval Space Command has deemed this to be acceptable losses as compared to the thousands of sailors, and billions of ship tonnage that could potentially be lost in a conventional flagship engagement. The BOARD has only been deployed once at the battle for Lang Di, where it was deployed against a rebel destroyer. Marines boarded and decisively captured the enemy ship, suffering 9 casualties, inflicting 391 casualties, and capturing 3,428 crew. 3 BOARDS were shot down on approach resulting in the death of 48 marines and 3 USSC navigators. All USSC cruisers and frigates are expected to be fitted with BOARD systems by 2207.
