I go into bookshops and read the new books and judge the first page pretty harshly to make myself feel better.

I didn't feel better after reading the first five pages of this book, but had a plane to catch so who knows.

Honestly, this book is a better Jonathan Franzen book than his last two, but of course /lit/ hates Franzen, so they'll probably hate this one too.
It's a fun book if you're looking for something with style and interesting characterizations, but it's not the next Gravity's Rainbow by a long shot.
