>Out of all the possible dumb material in the Universe you happen to occupy the small amount that are heavy atoms
>Out of all the vast amount of molecules in the universe you happen to occupy the miniscule amount that compose a living being
>out of all the microbial and single celled lifeforms you happen to be born as a conscious animal
>out of all the conscious animals throughout all the billion years of life in Earths history you happen to be born as the only one ever capable of reflecting on this fact

Can a non-religious writer explain this without falling back on just declaring it an unfathomable fluke?

Sup, /lit/!

So I finally made it. I am a proud ESL student, who's ready to go through big texts and, in theory, enjoy the language as it is. I'm tired of reading opinion journalism and news articles. I'm gonna take a crack at reading English/American literature.

However, I have a very poor experience. In fact, I've read only one book (some bulshit novel "Outsiders"). So a little help could be useful. i browsed through your advicelist and it is a little bit irrelevant to my goals.

What I need is a good or excellent contemporary novel by a native English speaker. I want to kick off with easy‐to‐read language, though it's not a mandatory requirement. I prefer novels, stories. I'm not a fan of sci‐fi or fantasy.

I do but even so it is impractical when biking long distances, especially when you get that euphoric cycling high tunnel vision but at the same time there is nothing better for literary inspiration than having the sun on the face while experiencing this cycling high.

I've been learning Arabic for a while and want to start getting into some literature to become more confident with reading and writing in this language. Short stories, novels, classic tales, and important historical and cultural works all welcome. If you can give me beginners' and intermediate texts, I would appreciate it.

start with the greeks

A short gloss of Notes from Underground:

A man will be agonized in the simultaneous pursuit of two different lives with two different goals for living.

In particular a minor civil servant who seeks neither promotion nor pay raise visits a whore house despite his saintly aspirations, and in the process experiences immense pain and the faint glow of a quickly self-sabotaged hope over and over again.

It is thus a portrayal of self-loathing, popular on account of the ubiquity of this experience, but meaningful on account of this particular cause: the simultaneous pursuit of two lives which are, ultimately, mutually exclusive.

I'm looking for books that involve the sea. Stuff with ships(modern or old), pirates, adventures at sea, really anything to do with it. Stuff I've gone through that I can think of right now are:

Moby Dick
Robinson Crusoe
Castaway
Treasure Island
Gulliver's Travels
The Sea
Old Man and the Sea
The Sea is my Brother

Probably a few others I forgot to mention. I have my eye on those Master and Commander books, also The Republic of Pirates by Woodard.

Robin Hobb's Liveship trader books are bloody amazing. My personal favourite "sea adventures" novels out of everything (including the classics).

Ships that are themselves alive, characters in their own right and surprisingly complex at that. Lots of trading, pirates and so on.

And what is the point of this thread?
Are you trying to start a meme-off?
Are you trying to contribute to this boared's culture?
Doubtful.

Buddy, whether Plato or Aristotle were better doesn't matter. It doesn't need a thread. This board does not need you. Fact of life. Heh, maybe if you had lurked more you woulda known that. But look, you're trying to meme and I get that, I was a big memer myself in the day, but your technique is all wrong. The minimalism is impressive, but reflects the limitations of your own intelligence too glaringly to pass beyond anything more than being "Humorous" (I use the word loosely).
Listen kid, your life is probably shit compared to mine and your intelligence is probably far belong my own, so it's unlikely you'll understand, but just try. Your thread is shit. It proves that you are shit. You like logic? well there's a logical phormula. itproves YOU ARE SHIT. Yeah, that's right, welcome to the water. What were you thinking while making this thread? OoohoooOhooh, this will be clever?? Did you really think that? Well it itsn't, and you aren't, and that's no surprise to anyone.

Sometimes a Great Notion is a much better book by Kesey
I think the film eclipses the novel for cuckoo desu
>>
I actually just recently read both One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest and Sometimes A Great Notion. I thought Cuckoo's Nest was a very good book. Some people (like >>9928227) will tell you that Notion is better. But I personally found Cuckoo's Nest to be more enjoyable. Notion takes bigger risks stylistically and it demands more of the reader I'd say. Some people might enjoy that more. It just didn't seem to resonate with me as much as Cuckoo's Nest did.
