I'm writing a book (as are we all) but the thing about this book is that it's something like post apocalyptic:

a huge majority of humanity has died out, leaving a small population with enough resources for about 8-9 billion people (the "apocalypse" happened in the nearish future, but it's never explicitly dated, or explained)

Now, the thing is, is that I wanted to make an apocalypse that isn't dystopian or mad max style. Since there's so much of everything, nobody has to fight for anything.

The remaining humans sort of group together in "towns" that sort of evolve out of people repurposing parts of huge cities, and hippie communes in... wherever they feel like it.

Since there's such a surplus in everything, people can just go out and get whatever they want. So there's no reason to fight over say, money or jewelry or other material objects.

Electricity/ internet/ crops/ etc, those are still maintained (on a much smaller scale) by people who have nothing better to do/ get asked to do it, that sorta thing.

Now, of course there's still things like rapists and serial killers and additional things like apocalypse death cults, but the majority lives mostly peaceably in a mostly anarchic society.

(Bare in mind that this is about 10 years after the apocalypse- once populations start to rise and resources actually need to be replenished, this would slowly change)

My question is, how valid is this interpretation? I know that the debate on whether humans are inherently violent or peaceable has always been a hot topic
I personally believe humans are inherently good
. Do you think people could live like this in this scenario, or is this a painfully naive backdrop for a novel? Would you be interested in reading something like that?

>how valid is this interpretation?
Interpretation of what? Your made up scenario? Just admit it, you don't really want advice, you just want people to tell you it's a cool idea. It's clear from your wishy washy noncommittal post that you haven't even started writing it yet.
>>
>>9055139
First of all, yes I have started writing it. I'm on page 50. Second of all, I do want advice.
This is /lit/. I don't care if you actually LIKE the story, but I want to know if a group of people in that scenario might act like that.

Basically, what I'm asking is if philosophically or sociologically it's even kind of realistic, since it's not a fantasy world, or if I should a caste system or some shit.
>>
>>9055149
>philosophically realistic
What does that mean? You want to know what people might act like in your made up future scenario? Come on dude, that's like the whole point of writing a novel. What do YOU think they would act like? You made it up.

What have you gained from your knowledge of philosophy and literature, /lit/?

I want to better cope with life's external circumstances and have more peace of mind. I'm tired of worrying solely about myself and my own personal flaws, focusing on them has only ever depressed me and never inspired me to change much. I'd rather concern myself with the greater issues of life and pursue self development through the attainment of knowledge. From your experience, has education, specifically education in philosophy and literature, helped you in this regard? Are you more or less happy?

So according to Heidegger, living authentically means not just accepting what society wants of you, but finding your own "genuine" way of living.

Do you guys agree? How can one find out more about themselves when they're swamped with society's responsibilities?

Have you ever felt that you were able to understand the world better after learning, for example, thermodynamics, even in topics totally unrelated to chemistry and physics? Have you ever noticed that the "patterns & structures of thought" seem to repeat themselves in science, philosophy, and even literature?

What about encountering books that were substantial enough to affect your life after thinking and applying its ideas? Do you consider a certain text to be "foundational" for those in pursuit of knowledge?

I'm hoping to create a list of 15-20 books, in a variety of subjects, that will increase clarity & depth of thought, leaving autodidacts with the mental faculties necessary to tackle future challenges. I would also like to have this list of books be sufficient to achieve a cursory education for people looking to improve their knowledge beyond the dregs of their high school or college education, though this isn't as important.

I need to keep the scope limited to the fundamentals. There are far more than 20 worthwhile books, and this isn't a definitive guide to "the best books ever". Some fields like "economics" may already require proficiency in basic fields like history, mathematics, and philosophy, so it would be redundant to cover include them. Only the bare necessities should be maintained for brevity.

That is my shortlist.

There are some basic topics that I feel like might need more coverage, like algorithms & advanced logic, computer & data science, statistics, natural and social sciences, psychology, world history, government, history of ideas, communication, poetry & music theory, hermeneutics, esoterics & mysticism, semantics & semiotics, reference materials, and books on rigorous writing. Of course, there's also practical living that might be useful to consider as well. You're not smart unless you've built something with your hands, in my opinion.

Otherwise, I think this roughly covers the "breadth" of all of the structures of thought possible for the mind with sufficient depth.

Thanks for your time. What are some other books that might be helpful here?

Stop being fucking ashamed of what you did, just look at it and tell yourself "wow, I went quite a long way from back there" or "ok, that's a reminder of how I should NOT do it".

I know you have high expectations of yourself, and you think you can deliver an opus dei on your first try, but honestly, those writings will be a minor detail of history once you are published; they could even serve as an example that even the shittiest writer can deliver. Hell, nobody even needs to know about them, if you prefer to burn these.

Picked this up the other day for 4 bucks for a friend of mine. He's into collecting older books. I was trying to figure out when this edition was published but I haven't come up with anything. Has anyone seen this particular edition before? I couldn't find a single image of a matching book. Any help would be appreciated.

>Last night Mildred, my neighbor on the floor below, masturbated with an oboe. The oboe wheezed and squealed in her vagina. Mildred groaned. Later, when I thought she was finished, she started screaming. I lay in bed with a book about India. I could feel her pleasure pass up through the floorboards into my roo,. Of course there might have been another explanation for what I heard. Perhaps it was not the oboe but the player of the oboe who was penetrating Mildred. Or perhaps Mildred was striking her small nervous dog with something slim and musical, like an oboe.
>Mildred who screams lives below me. Three young women from Connecticut live above me. Then there is a lady pianist with two daughters on the parlor floor and some lesbians in the basement. I am a sober person, a mother, and I like to go to bed early 0 but how can I lead a regular life in this building? It is a circus of vaginas leaping and prancing: thirteen vaginas and only one penis, my little son.
What the FUCK did she mean by this?

I don't know anything about Saunders but it sounds like pure wank from the title alone, and not the noteworthy kind.

Apparently it's the kind of wank that Thomas Pynchon likes, so.
>>
>>9054728
I have preordered it and am looking forward to it, but I'm not particularly hyped about it. I like Saunders' short stories, but I'm a bit apprehensive about longer form stuff from him. We shall see.
