But no overarching complete system state media control existed in the ancient world. PRC of today has quite a complete control of state media on all levels. Ancient China wasn't such powerful in their control of media.

Seems that European culture isn't very strong in the US, even among those of European descent, they're mostly just ended up being assimilated into this vague category of "white Americans" which are the norm, not caring so much about the specific European culture they originated from. Of course, this isn't so much the case for new immigrants from Europe, especially those from an area that not many white Americans come from (seems like Polish-American used to be a distinctive culture in the past, but now people rarely make a big deal of it).

And to an extent the same thing occurred with African-Americans, a lot of them don't even know what part of Africa they came, if their ancestors were brought over as slaves and there wasn't really any documentation of their specific origins.

Basically, what I'm getting at is that in the US there isn't really a strong identification with "European" or "African" culture, but rather "white" or "black" culture, each of which is kind of this vague blend of various cultures from Europe and Africa. And white Americans seem to be thought of as "the norm", and thus not very interesting to identify with, even though individual European cultures might be distinctive and interesting from an American perspective, people tend not to focus on that. So among white Americans, someone with German ancestry and someone with British ancestry are more likely to focus on the commonality of being white, rather than the differences in the culture of their ancestors. Whereas they would see African-Americans as being "different" and "interesting", and find that more appealing to focus on.
