What was life like during the Cold War for the average Soviet citizen?

Receive rations
Put in paperwork for car
Go home
Eat borscht and do not eat the beets for they can be used to make more borscht
Sleep
Repeat

I had a teacher in high school whose wife came to the US as a foreign exchange student. Her class went through a long orientation, the two main points of which were

Had a ex-soviet citizen at my Uni once, and she literally told us everything was great. The govt. helped you with a lot of shit. She was from Russia. Life on the satellites must have been different if I had to take a guess.

Get paid enough so you can save some to buy yourself a car and/or open bank account for kid when he/she grow up
Get enough social privileges you can travel around USSR on vacations quite cheaply and have paid vacation in sanatoriums on sea coast for your whole family
Get paid 13 salaries per year and more if you didnt act like a total dick
Get paid by your workplace when you're away on sport competition, get travel expenses covered too
