How similar is Witcher lore in comparison to polish mythology and history?
49 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
Not as heavy as you may think.

The Elves are almost completely based on Irish mythology in terms of language and their culture.

The Skelligers are Norse and Irish.

The North is broadly slavic, with many of the Monsters being based on slavic legendary creatures. But overall the North is indeed pretty slavic.

This is not a troll post, or /pol/ post. I am currently Irish, but because of how much of a multi-racial hub my once homogeneous country is becoming, i feel like it is losing it's culture and identity. So out of all the foreign non white cultures that are here, the only ones I respect or Like are Indians. Indians while of various tribes and castes, are all proud of being Indian, and thus I want to feel culturally alive again, and be part of a nation that is not at risk of losing itself. So what steps should I take to becoming an honorary Indian?

Thread has a link about westerners moving there.

Is relatively easy. It's cheap to settle, working being a foreigner isn't difficult. Nepal is a nice place as well and seems a bit calmer. There's a series of videos of an american expat couple living there.

Alright... let's talk about this guy.

We're usually taught that he's important because 'he's important... and muh Christianity.' But what else is there to know about him?

I mean, his personality, his appearance, his legacy? Bro was the last God-tier emperor the West had. Do you think he knew that at the time? Why him and why then? Why 'one last good one?'

Does anybody know what he really looks like? If he was God-tier like Augustus or Aurelius, why are there so few surviving images of him?

I mean he's literally one of the most important people of all time. Why do we generally know so little about him?

Was Constantine really a Christian, or just an opportunist?
>>
>>3157649
Why not both? He certainly wasn't a particularly principled Christian. He had himself proclaimed the equal of the twelve apostles on his death.
>>
>>3157649
Like most people of his time he didnt get baptized until he was near death, after which he lived much like a monk until the end.

Before that he killed anyone who stood in his way, including family.

Elphinstone was an old idiot too far entrenched in his views to make something useful. He had all the warning signs to realize that leaving was a bad idea and yet he still did it anyway. To be fair, you can't lay all the blame on him. The EIC leaders did not listen to Alexander Burnes, an experienced diplomat in Afghanistan affairs, about who they should support for power in Afghanistan. Dost Mohammed would likely have been the better choice but the EIC continued to support the useless and horribly cruel drunkard Shah Shujah. The EIC also ignored warnings from Burnes that the British Garrison in Kabul was beginning to bother the native people there. This would prove fatal for Burnes as his embassy was stormed and he was killed.

All in all this whole thing was rife with mismanagement and it's just more proof that the EIC was run by incompetent fools. The British in India finally started to act in a more competent manner following the mutiny of 1857.

Can anyone recommend some good books for starting to learn about Chinese history? I'm most interested in learning about the republic period but I also understand it's difficult to do so without having a lot of knowledge of how it was prior to that.

No problem senpai.

China has a fascinating history. That book itself doesn't go super in-depth but it's useful for covering a large portion of history until near contemporary era and is well written.

I'll get shit for this, but if you go on the AskHistorians subreddit the sidebar has a large list of books vetted by scholars and historians, you'll find a large list of ones on the various eras if you want to go further in a specific era or study.

Why do humans tend to migrate to crowded places (unless it's overcrowded)? Are our 'urban social horizon' so limited that we always want to stay with as many people near us as possible?

You've either lived in the same little rural town your whole life or you're underage. Either way, there is so much more to think about when you move beyond the size of the place your moving too. Large cities usually have more economic opportunities and things to do, people to see, in general. Does this mean smaller areas don't have their advantages too? Of course not. Also, this is not history and calling it humanities is a stretch by far considering the sociological implications. >>>/sci/

-Jobs
-Easy access to conveniences (24 hour stores, etc.) - which is especially good if you don't like driving
-Proximity of millions of potential mating partners
-City people tend to be more socially tolerant, which is good if you're gay, a minority, etc.
-Some people like anonymity... living in a small town where everybody knows everybody has an upside but also a downside (gossip, judgmental people can have more influence, etc.)

Redpill me on the Zanj Rebellion. Did the Arabs deserve it?
26 posts and 8 images submitted.
>>
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zanj_Rebellion
>The Zanj Rebellion was a major uprising against the Abbasid Caliphate, which took place from 869 until 883. Begun near the city of Basra in present-day southern Iraq and led by one 'Ali ibn Muhammad, the insurrection is traditionally believed to have involved some enslaved Bantu-speaking people (Zanj) who had originally been captured from the coast of East Africa and transported to the Middle East.[3] It grew to involve many slaves and free men from several regions of the Caliphate, and claimed tens of thousands of lives before it was finally defeated.
>Several Muslim historians, such as al-Tabari and al-Mas'udi, consider the Zanj revolt to be one of the "most vicious and brutal uprisings" of the many disturbances that plagued the Abbasid central government.[4] Modern scholars have characterized the conflict as being "one of the bloodiest and most destructive rebellions which the history of Western Asia records,"[5] while at the same time praising its coverage as being among the "most fully and extensively described campaign[s] in the whole of early Islamic historical writing."

a better question would be when do the Arabs NOT deserve it?

in former Yugoslavia Kosovo was most underdeveloped. So Tito imported cheap work force from albania. They rebuild Pristina and suddenly monkey brain kicks in and logic of "if i built it its mine" so they brought their friends with them since Yugoslavia > Albania.

here you go anon others will be triigerd by this.

Bring the good old bugle, boys, we'll sing another song.Sing it with a spirit that will start the world along.Sing it as we used to sing it, 50,000 strong. While we were marching through Georgia.

Chorus
Hurrah! Hurrah! we bring the jubilee!
Hurrah! Hurrah! the flag that makes you free!
So we sang the chorus from Atlanta to the sea
While we were marching through Georgia.

How the darkeys shouted when they heard the joyful sound. How the turkeys gobbled which our commissary found. How the sweet potatoes even started from the ground. While we were marching through Georgia.

Yes and there were Union men who wept with joyful tears,
When they saw the honored flag they had not seen for years;
Hardly could they be restrained from breaking forth in cheers,
While we were marching through Georgia.

"Sherman's dashing Yankee boys will never reach the coast!"
So the saucy rebels said and 'twas a handsome boast
Had they not forgot, alas! to reckon with the Host
While we were marching through Georgia.

So we made a thoroughfare for freedom and her train,
Sixty miles in latitude, three hundred to the main;
Treason fled before us, for resistance was in vain
While we were marching through Georgia.

No joke lads, nice wife-tier girls older than 20 who aren't easy to fugg are impressed by things like that. History, any kind of research, any kind of writing (even if it's fucking Harry Potter furry futa), and ESPECIALLY building/fixing things as a hobby will turn them on more than some loser who plays video games in his free time.

Younger girls and roasties tend to be less impressed, but it's happened before.
