Why things commonly associated to the middle ages came from France?
Gothic architecture, chivalry, chanson de geste, crusades, all seem to pretty much linked to France.
Why the middle ages aren't associated with the free cities of Italy or hanseatic league?

Because Media is based around English history and the English spent the whole Middle Ages wishing it could be France, and then failing spectacularly.
>>
>>3164174
That's actually a fair point. Obviously, England evolved around the french sphere of influence, thus the english point of view is centered on France, and it's the same for Americans.
>>
Your observation is right for the High Middle Ages, but I would say the Late Middle Ages are associated more with Northen Italy, Renaissance being quite a localized cultural movement originally.
But yeah, I noticed it too when I tried to find some relative recent book with a narrative history of HRE in 900-1400.

Why did the Romans build Hadrian's Wall? Couldn't they have just conquered the tribes up north in Scotland/basically killed them off?

Britain was always a logistical nightmare for Rome, which is why it was one of the first bits of fat to be trimmed when shit started going bad. It probably just wasn't worth it.

Also, Hadrian was not an expansionist, he was more concerned with fortifying secure borders, and making Rome a stable, contiguous state. He was the one who ditched Dacia as well.

Basically this. Her tactics played perfectly into Roman strengths by charging a mass of undisciplined, lightly armed and armored warriors into the tightly ranked, strictly disciplined, and heavily armored legionaries. Basically it's the exact kind of battle that every Roman general would fantasize about having because it's guaranteed victory. Suetonious could have won just as decisively if he had half as many men as he did.

Wedge formation.

It turned the Britons numbers against them, and squashed them against each other so they couldn't even move, while the Romans could pretty casually go about butchering their way through them.

>>

Real cavalry does everything a chariot does better. You're faster and more maneuverable since you don't have to drag a cart around. You can have more people actually fighting, as you can eliminate the functions of driver and multiple horses to pull one chariot. You eliminate an unstable platform that you're riding along. You eliminate a vast variety of logistical needs pertaining to chariot parts.

As soon as you had horses and riding techniques capable of actually being used in battle, cavalry started to outcompete chariots.
>>
>>3162890
Why didn't they make all cavalry obsolete though?

His father Joseph Kennedy sold his children's souls to the Devil in exchange for wealth and power. It's why they've all died horribly.
>>
I think the Kennedy curse was caused by Joe Sr. having his eldest daughter get a botched lobotomy that turned her permanently into a 2 yo all because she was a bit on the spectrum.

NOT a /pol/ thread, srsly. Asking from /his/ stuff.

I want to get an actual picture of the history of mixing in the USA. AFAIK mixing with natives was relatively common and even as a token of "royalty" in some cases (ie Matoaka/Pocahontas) and mixing with black people wasn't rare either. Besides the european immigration post WW2 it seems that USA was no different in mixing than, say, Uruguay where the average white person has some native/black admixture.

/pol/turds say that racemixing is a new phenomena but for what I get racial segregation wasn't even the norm in USA originally and was even restricted to a sole period that is even small compared to the total timespan of the USA.

Is there any reading or anything to get a real picture of miscegenation in USA without retarded one drop rule or another supremacist (either white or black) vias?

It obviously happened, otherwise they wouldn't need laws against it. Depending on time and place it ranges from "Weird, but to each his own" to "REEEEE I'LL FUCKING KILL YOU FOR FALLING IN LOVE!!!!". The average person would just be mean to you if you were a stranger.
>>
>>3162038
absent mass-immigration, and/or very large minority populations, it would probably be totally irrelevant.

Also, OP, miscegenation is an idiotic word, at least in this context.
>>
>>3162013
The very first Asian groups in 19th Century America (namely Flips and Chinks) pretty much married whites (mostly Irish) because they pretty much have no choice since they a superminority and were mostly male.

Irish women managed to marry these people since anti-Catholicism was so high at the time no one else among the WASPs would marry them.

Any of you lads happen to know what kind of symbols are on this coin? My dad got it a few years ago mixed in with a bag of old Roman coins he bought online. I liked it and thought it was unusual so he let me have it. Lately I have gotten curious on the origin of the symbols. They don't seem to be Roman, and looked more Arabic or Hebrew. Also what purpose the writing has for a coin that small. Most ancient coins seem to either have images of leaders and the like on them, but this just has "scribbles" on both sides. Any one out there who can shed some light on this?

At what point did humans stop relying solely on mead and wine for hydration and drinking water became the new standard
32 posts and 5 images submitted.

They always drank water but they were able to some drink water without diluting wine into it most of the time, once standards for clean water finally picked up close to what we have now.
>>
>>3155664
Only in cities was water quality ever a concern, until we started really fucking up the countryside.

A beverage of more than about 3% alcohol makes a net loss of water, so anything sanitized with alcohol would probably be heavily diluted.
