Why didn't every country build a giant wall around it like the Chinese?
>>2738645
Wells like that are only useful in very specific circumstances also they were way to poor
>>2738645
>Shit's expensive
>Walls don't work against concentrated attacks
>Mountains/rivers/deserts/swamps work better
>build wall
>enemy takes over wall
>now you can't attack enemy but they can attack you
only works if your enemies are nomads who don't have the manpower for static fortifications
Hello /his/, I was wondering what would be the earliest known case of "historical reenactors". Would people in, say, the 14th century ever reenact 12th century stuff like modern people do the american civil war and stuff?
The earliest examples would probably be the Athenian Plays in which actors would act out scenes from Greek history. Many plays and transcripts survive to this day and a good amount of them are historical in nature.
full-scale battle re-enactment has been rather rare in antiquity as far as I know.
>>2738517
Probably, but not exactly, more like telling a story of what happened instead of actual reenacting
>>2738517
Every Europe/MENA nation 6th-18th century, trying to reenact Rome
who here learning a new language?
why did you choose to learn the language that you're learning?
how capable are you in using the language to communicate?
do you think knowing multiple language will have a decreased value in coming times as automated translation becomes more relevant?
Why are people born into bilingual families the most proud of knowing another language besides English even though they didn't have to grind for it?
Spanish cause I already know French and figure it would be useful as an American
Russian cause I like Russian literature and history
I'll dabble around with Persian like that too
Im learning Japanese because I like reading manga and Im a weeb in general. I've never tried to speak to a nip so I don't know how capable I am, but I guess I should start soon.

I'm fluent in french and english, started learning latin last week in order to reach my life long goal of learning every romance language.

Was it autism?
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yukio_Mishima
>>2738380
No, it was suicide.
Beautiful death, for an ideal.
He never for a moment thought it'd work.
So, yeah, autism.
>>2738380
>never actually read Mishima
just watch his short clip Patriotism instead.
How could it be prevented? when was the last nail in the coffin?
From my point of view, they just focused too much on the past, not developing military technology that much.
Adn from what I heard they just could come back from the latin empire.
Was there any real hope for them from the start? They were beaten from all sides over the centuries.
>>2738124
I don't know what you mean by develop new military technology. There military changed dramatically throughout there history. Remember through most of history technological change came very slowly.
Alot if their failings in the end came from having too many powerful neighbors and they were too prone to civil war to consolidate any gains. Also, remember Byzantine Empire laster longer than almost any other state in existence.
>>2738141
>I don't know what you mean by develop new military technology
Not using gunpowder
Also reliying too much on mercenaries.
Why where mercenaries the majority of their armies?
>Also, remember Byzantine Empire laster longer than almost any other state in existence.
If they just held for another 400 years....
>>2738167
They didn't just use mercenaries. Look up the theme system. Also, .mercenaries were great soldiers for most of history. Also, the Byzantines were already in terminal decline by the time gun powder was available.
If the Greeks saw Prometheus as the one who brought life to mankind why didn't they worship him instead of Zeus.
>>2737919
Because Zeus kicked his ass for doing so.
>>2737919
The same reason Christians don't worship Satan for bringing knowledge to mankind.
Worship itself is an act of subservience to a higher power, which means valuing said power above one's own self and advancement.
>>2737919
Because Zeus would ask Poseidon to flood the world and wipe out ungrateful humanity *again*. Havent you read Bullfinch's Mythology
What are some historical or rumors you find interesting, that aren't necessarily historically or academically important?
>>2737873
historical theories* or rumors
>>2737873
That Toby Reynolds was the Umquaa (or however you spell it) shooter.
One of mine is: Was Marie Therese Charlotte, the daughter of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, raped while imprisoned in the Temple after her aunt was sent away and executed? She was kept all on her own, and mentions in her memoirs that the guards would come into her room even at night and say vulgar things, so she always kept herself fully clothed and had a hard time sleeping for fear they would catch her by surprise. She told a companion after she was traded to Austria that one of the last things her aunt told her was to never let any of the guards or inspectors come in while she was in her bed.
It's not really historically or academically important, there's now way to find evidence for it, and the only time it's brought up historically is as part of the now disproven legends that she was swapped out for another woman at the Austrian border because she was pregnant after being raped. But I just wonder.
From the German Revolution of 1918-1919 to the Burning of the Reichstag, is the reaction to communist activity leading to the rise of the NSDAP under discussed?
Tbh it kinda seems like a Commies dindu nuffin ploy.
It probably is outside of Germany
>>2737586
Rise of NSDAP was due to the crisis.
>>2737634
A crisis that had much to do with communist activity I've discovered
Why didn't the Arabs ever colonise or expand into the heart of Africa regions of the Congo, instead only sticking to the Nile river, Sahel, and East African coast, only going inland to gather slaves?
There's a giant desert in the way.
Hardly anybody would want to cross something like the Sahara or deal with the other factors such as the diseases, wildlife, or tribal locals until better technology would become common in around the 17th century or so.
>>2736025
Dude, we're talking about Arabs. They're experts at crossing deserts. Bedouin practically live off the desert. Besides, arab traders made it as far down as Tanzania and Madagascar, the desert wasn't in their way anymore. It was just a bit further to the rivers of the Congo and its rich resource wealth.
>>2736019
Constant threat from the East and West.
What the fuck was his problem? Was it the Jews?

When did Imperialism become such a dirty word? When did the goal of Empire become taboo?
Is it better this way? Do you think it can really last?

>>2735238
>>2735261
It's true, though. Imperialism fell out of favor pretty much in line with the rise of Communism. Being anti-imperialist was one of it's most successful selling points in the early days.
Imperialism is basically the perfect example a commie could use to point out exploitation of the masses. The weaker power got exploited, the soldiers enforcing empire got exploited (to a lesser degree) and the elites sat back and watched the money and power roll in.
Happy Hitler Dead day /his/
