Dragon Quest III for the NES, GBC, and SNES

Sorry for that.
The best version has to be the Game Boy Color one, it has all the shit that the Super Famicom had plus some ultra hard to get hidden dungeon with the Rubyss Sword, which is the best weapon in the game. Also portable which makes it even better.
Started playing DQ for the first time this year, and went with the GBC versions for the first three. I think I'll make it tradition and play the whole series in their handheld port forms.
I finished III's main scenario a while back but I'm still playing it off and on in small bursts to collect the remaining monster medals to get into the final extra GBC dungeon. I'm on Death Stalkers now.
Gotta buy a special controller just to properly play one game?

That's not over 255. Other M's max is 80, Prime Hunters' max is 95, Super Metroid's max is 230, Fusion and Zero Mission's are 250, while Metroid 1, 2, Prime 2, and Prime 3 all cap at 255. (the highest 8-bit number)
Dreadnought just doesn't care and keeps going.

So you pronounce games like "Gawhms" instead of "Gayms"?

This is an all-purpose thread for sharing thoughts on critically acclaimed classic games that you have played for the very first time recently. I'm always interested in hearing people's thoughts on a game with a modern, unbiased perspective. For example, if you played Ocarina of Time recently, what did you think of it knowing its legacy yet having no personal attachment to it?
I missed out on the PS1 era, for instance, so I've been going back and playing some of the classics that made the system. I played Tomb Raider 1 for the first time this year and I actually greatly appreciated it for what it was. sure, the control scheme is very clunky, but in a way that is what made it appealing to me, because it required a complete mastery of the controls that modern games nowadays don't do, since they are so automated.
What classic games have you played for the first time recently? What did you think?
>>3209430
Maybe not the most obvious of games to come to mind when discussing "critically acclaimed classic games" but I picked up Goldeneye for the N64 for the first time earlier this year.
Never played it before, but I had played other "retro fps" like Half Life, Doom and Quake.
Honestly it's a blast. The controls nearly gave me a hernia at first, at least while I was trying different control schemes trying to feel out which one was best (ended up sticking with default).
4-player splitscreen was an awesome experience as well, especially playing with others who haven't touched an N64 since it was basically new, I may have actually piqued my friends interested in retro gaming with this one.
>>3209430
I played Ocarina of Time for the first time last year, and it's one of my favorite games of all time, easily.
>>3209568
>GoldenEye
There was (and presumably is) a plugin for Project64 that offered keyboard and mouse control for a bunch of games, including GoldenEye. Granted it's a totally different way of playing it, and doesn't work perfectly, but I really enjoyed it. I 00'd the game on console as a kid, and then again with the mod. Highly recommended, if you're interested.
>>3209430
I played through the original F-Zero for the first time, recently. I had played as a kid, but it was too hard for me. I really enjoy it. I know a lot of people here like X the best, but the first one is so perfectly simple. It's still hard as shit, too. So few games rely on you playing the same level until you know it perfectly and can do it perfectly that it was a nice change. More of an arcade feel, in some ways. Definitely a welcome change from strictly linear games with save systems, where, if you get stuck on a part you just bang your head against it until you break through. F-Zero (and Super Mario Kart, which I'm playing now) make no distinction between practice and progress, and that's super refreshing.
Let's get some prototype shit going here. Pic related, an early Dreamcast design. Looks goofy, but i think the prongs were supposed to be controller ports.
Looks like a vacuum cleaner.
This is another early Dreamcast before it got slapped with the weird curvy design aesthetic that it sadly shipped with. I personally like the black case, it makes it look less like a computer and more like a game console.
The last Dreamcast thing im gonna post is this design, which is realy similar to the final one but it has some Cyclops-tier laser hole on the top of it.
Did you ever skip school to play /vr/ games back in your day?
We would skip school and go to cyber cafes and play CS or Battlefield 1942.
> inb4 not vr
I know, I just want to get the conversation going.
>get thermometer
>warm it up using a light bulb
>show it to my mom and tell her I have fever
>stay home playing the vidya
I remember I beat Quackshot once.
The feeling of playing vidya comfily in my bed while knowing all the other suckers were bored in class was the greatest thing ever back then.
Also a day when you're a kid is long as fuck.
Nowadays if you want to skip job you can't really fake being sick because they send you a doctor, and a day as an adult is so short that isn't even worth it anyway.
>>3224259
>a day when you're a kid is long as fuck.

They did though. It was called the Gameboy Color.
Repair/mod discussion thread. What are you working on?
http://www.gametechwiki.com/w/index.php/Main_Page
Check out the wiki and see if there's anything you can add.
Most problems can be solved simply by cleaning the console itself, the games, or the controllers. Follow this guide before attempting any repairs: http://www.gametechwiki.com/w/index.php/Game_and_Console_Cleaning
Not the usual OP, but I haven't seen one up for a while and I wanted to talk about some stuff.
Trying to teach myself to fix all my own stuff.
I don't know shit about soldering other than some very basic stuff I do at work; I need to replace the speaker in my GBA and the Caps in my Game Gear. I have a Weller SP40L I got from a family member I was going to use, but someone told me it was too hot to work on electronics. Is this true? If so, what soldering iron should I get?
>>3146062
I use a Weller WLC100(cheapest shit they make) and it works fine for electronics. Is your temperature adjustable? Does it tell you temp? Gonna need some details about your soldering iron to give you good advice.
Glad this thread is finally up, I was asking tech questions in threads and getting ignored in favor of shitposting. Here's my question:
After seeing a number of people online talk about how the newer RGB encoders are better than the old CXA1145's, I was thinking about replacing the one in my Genesis. Does anyone have any experience with putting a 1645 or 2075(I think that's the newest one) into a system, and if so, have you noticed much difference in video quality?
>>3146084
No adjustment, doesn't tell me temp. Basically just a metal stick that gets hot.
It has 40W 120 V ~ 60Hz printed on it, if that helps.
I figure if /vr/ likes talking about people on the internet who play retro vidya, why not a thread dedicated to the people who brought us retro vidya?
So I guess you can post programmers, artists, designers, writers or whatever (even company presidents) here. I'm going to start with Ken and Roberta of Sierra fame.
And mandatory mention of these 2
Miyamoto playing the banjo.
Ken Williams does post on /vr/ sometimes although he claims to be his son.
I want to live in a world where all 3D Sonic games were like the ones on Sega Saturn.
>>3213359
I never understood why they couldn't make a full game out of this, sonic R was a fast paced game so why don't mix that with this and get shit done.
>>3213359
I do too... maybe one day someone who likes the Saturn enough will make a fangame/ROM hack worthy of being played.
>>3213365
also i love the model of sonic in this and sonic R, i don't remember if saturn 3D blast has that design.
>Mediocre Story
>No job / spell learning system
>Straight level grinding
>Easy bosses
>Great Music
Not saying it was terrible game but was this the worst in the final fantasy series? It didn't have improved gameplay like any of the previous games did. I feel like this game was as barebones as an rpg can get.
The story was pretty great for SNES era. This was the first game I ever played where party members permanently died or left.
I don't know, it was my first RPG so maybe I'm biased but I always liked it. It's simple yeah, but there's nothing wrong with that since it's entertaining and short.
Ai from deathgaze likes it, so it can't be bad.
How ubiquitous were sound cards in the old (90s) days of gaming? Did people really shell out $200+ for this pic related bad boy to get better MIDI support for DooM and Ultima?
Sound card stuff is way before my time so I wouldn't even know how to compare minimum requirements. What happened if you had an outdated card? Would there be no sound, would the sound just not be as good?
>>3217138
Back in the day it made a big difference. Not really anymore, or past 96/97 after doom came out really. Processors became powerful enough where the identical thing could be done in software. The main issue is the quality of your pre-amp.
yes people paid money for sound cards you fucking idiot how old are you?
>>3217147
What I mean is, did people get excited about sound cards the way people do about video cards today? Did they buy them day one and strap them in with a sense of anticipation of better bleeps and bloops?
Or was it just a necessity, and that most people went for an older or bargain model.
This also would've been before the days of a computer being a multimedia center so in the early 90s I imagine a lot of general comsumers skimping on the sound card and just having no sound at all. Or maybe they didn't, I dunno, by the time I knew even the bare minimum about computers sound cards were a thing of the past.
What's the best NES, SNES, Genesis, Saturn, N64 controllers for PC?
DS3
>>3215252
But what is the best brand/model of each of those controllers that look like the original?
>>3215260
>>3215247
>>3215260
Just use a fucking PS3 controller shit. If it costs too much use a ps2 controller with an adapter. If you want to use your controller in pc games, don't want to spend 50 bucks and want wireless get an afterglow controller. Otherwise just get usb adapters for the console controllers you want and use the original controllers you faggot
Is it just nostalgia or is it really one of the greatest games of all time? What's everyone's favorite part? Favorite character/materia/boss/OST?
>>3212747
Mostly nostalgia. It's not one of the greatest games of all time but it's still pretty damn good. My favorite part would be all of Midgar, my favorite character is Cid, my favorite materia would be the 4x Cut, I don't have a favorite boss and my favorite OST would be https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BrwQPtxR36M
>>3212747
I didn't think it was that good. Going to go with nostalgia.
I am playing throught it for the first time right now.
I will post my thoughts on it as soon as I finish.
