This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!
>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.
Discussion of video processing and scaling devices is okay, but try to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories

So i have a 15Khz pc monitor but the other day intel HD drivers let me select 320x240p on it.
Is this some emulated mode? or is it double scanning it?
>>3229382
*30Khz
sorry not 15Khz
it let me select 240p on a 31Khz monitor
Still rocking that KV Trinitron. I really want one of those black curved screen late 90s XBRs because they have component video, but its a really specific one. I've pretty much given up with trying to find a nice PVM.
>tfw you have 95 and have no idea what the last goal post is anymore
>>3228765
Probably that one Choco Island stage, the tricky one with like 5 ways to complete the level.
>>3228765
I remember figuring out what last star I missed.
The Ghost House in Forest of Illusion has two exits, one of which will send you back to Forest of Illusion 1.
What's the best, definitive, "if you're only going to play one play this one", Wario Land game?
I've only tried [notretro]Wario Land: Shake It[/notretro], and while it's visually gorgeous, it was a bit slow and easy for my taste.
I know the VirtualBoy one has quite a following, but I'm not sure if it's only because it might be the only redeeming game on that catalogue.
Wario Land 4 looks fine, but I'm wonder what people who've completely played them all recommend.
>>3228656
Having only played 3 I say 3. Goodbye.
>>3228656
Vb wario is best
>>3228656
All the /vr/-compliant ones are awesome, but they're basically come in two very different flavors:
* the first two (original and Virtual Boy) are the most traditional, but great in every way, specially compared with the (then) available handheld Marios. I still like the original best among the two, but it's a fucking crime we won't ever get a VC port for the 3DS of the latter.
* II and 3 have extremely fun, unique gameplay and they represent the real, legitimate start of the Wario series as its own thing. They're similar enough to each other, so 3 would have to be the best

Pretty much all of them. I suck so bad at those games. Fate of Atlantis was the only one that didn't make me feel like a complete retard.
I always get screwed up by pixel hunting.
The worst was in Sam n Max Hit the Road. I had to stop playing for weeks because I didn't know where to get money to pay for items at the convenience store.
Turned out I had to use hand on the mouse hole in their office.
>>3228438
I found the mouse hole but I thought he was only joking when he said they kept their money in there so I just forgot about it an moved on.
Where do you find friends that are into Retro vidya?
Is it just luck?
Pic related
You don't.
>>3227975
I'll be your friend anon
>>3227973
>go to retro-vidya-related thing
>talk to people there
>you are now friends unless you smell bad
Which style of Wario games do you like more, /vr/?
Hiroji Kiyotake's Wario games:
>Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3
>Virtual Boy Wario Land
>Wario Land 4
>Wario World (advisor)
>also made Metroid II
Takehiko Hosokawa's Wario games:
>Wario Land II
>Wario Land 3
>also made Metroid
As you can tell, Hosokawa's style are more puzzle-oriented, Wario is invincible, and there's an emphasis on transformations. Whereas Kiyotake's Warios are more action-based, with levels that flow faster and have more obvious treasures, lacking the explorative approach of II/3.
VBWL has a nice balance between action and exploration
I prefer the older Wario games. The newer games don't feel right.
Hiroji Kiyotake's
I enjoy Wario Land 2 and 3 but eh, I'm one of those guys that really enjoyed Wario World and Wario Land 4 and always wanted to see more games like those. Never got them, though.
Why the fuck did Final Fantasy games name their ice princess summon after this dude? The most they have in common is they're both blue.
If given the option in game I always renamed Shiva to Freyja. It just seems more appropriate.
>>3227851
>The most they have in common is they're both blue.
I wouldn't be surprised if that's as far as their thought-process went. Wouldn't be the first time such a thing happened in nip land
>>3227851
Final Fantasy takes a very fast-and-loose approach with almost all of its mythological appropriations. Japan has a tendency to take "what sounds cool" over "what makes sense."
>>3227851
That's what smt is for my nigga.
(mostly) accurate representations of different mythologies
What's the best Raiden game? In my opinion, Raiden 1 is the best.
>>3227581
Raiden DX was so fucking awesome! Its my second favorite!
>>3227575
I always preferred fighters jet myself.
Used to play the hell out of it at my local arcade before going to movies, no fucking clue how the hell they got that.
What's the hardest retro game you ever played? Pic unrelated.
Super Mario Bros. 2 J
Tower of Druaga
Wizardry IV
>>3227405
I see you haven't played many retrogames in your life if you think this is hard.
Its only "hard" in comparison with SMB1.
I can't believe this is a real game.
best pkmn game
>>3227420
what the fuck is this?
is this a god damn SF shooter?
Can one of you recommend some good sega genesis games - photo unrelated
>>3227156
Only Genesis, no CD or 32X games?

>>3227127
Oh God. I loved UN Squadron. But I only played it on SNES. What system is that?
>>3227161
Input Lag system 64.
>>3227174
Was it any good? Or just same game different platform?
/vr/, what are some good girlfriend-ready co-op games for PS1 and older?
To give you a frame of reference for what I'm looking for, Kirby is "too boring" and Gunstar Heroes is "too hard". Those are my go-to co-op games anyway and it'd be nice to play something that's new to me as well.
>>3227000
>girlfriend-ready

I'm planning on collecting some super Famicom games and eBay appears to be a decent resource at a glance. Why are these games so much cheaper than their American counterparts? What exactly does G86 mean? Does anyone have any advice for buying Japanese snes games from eBay?
For the most part, people aren't as interested in Japanese language games with no translation, or the mutilation of their SNES console to play them (people who use clones/emulation don't tend to care about anything beyond the big name games). Especially RPGs, nobody wants to play the import when it's untranslated
No idea what G86 means, but the reason they're so much cheaper is because collecting is more of a western thing. Japan doesn't have the same nostalgiaboner about old games that we do.
As for tips, my advice is start collecting ASAP. If prices for western games get any more inflated, there's a good chance people will abandon it and start flocking to the Japanese market. Also, look to see if there's a Japanese imports store in your town. I found SMB3-J for $10 at mine, and since there's no shipping to pay, you can see how the savings add up.
I recommend Super Metroid and all the bomberman games. Super Metroid is completely in English even in the famicom version.
>>3226621
More like, "literally who" retro games.
oh cool super ching chong 2 yeah definitely played the hell out of that gem
>>3226672
You are confusing it with the SNES port.
