So I'm playing Doom for the first time ever.
I was expecting a pretty dated game, one whose level of enjoyment would be mostly quaint and fueled by nostalgia and humble reverence.
Holy shit!
This game is fucking amazing. I'm honestly dumbstruck at how brilliant it remains after all these years. Even ignoring the brilliant enemy and level design, I don't think I've ever played a game that simply felt this good to just play. It's just so goddamn punchy and visceral.
It's beautiful, /vr/. It's so fucking beautiful.
What have I been missing all this time?
>>3219349
i dunno
welcome to hell, i guess

You missed the general
What's the first video game you'd let your first son play?
I'm thinking Super Mario RPG.
Bonus: What's the first song you'd let him listen to?
I'm thinking Aerosmith's 'Dude' (Looks Like A Lady), as they are my favorite band and are basically GOAT tier music all-around.
I would LET him play any game he wants, with full access to my collection.Except disc-based games. I'd have those in hiding until he learned how to handle one properly

This.
Super Mario World.
It was my first and an excellent introduction to the world of video games.
And for music; I dunno. I guess some Beatles, Beach Boys, or Creedence. Further down the road, I'll introduce him to bands like Gentle Giant, King Crimson, and Frank Zappa.
After playing Danganronpa and 999, I wanted something retro and I found pic related to be fantranslated.
It's a pretty comfy game, the characters are cool, you can roam the city at night and have some turn-based battles. But it feels somewhat repetitive at times..
Has anybody played this game or other similars? Retro visual novels thread
The game is Bloody Bride - Imadoki no Vampire btw...
There's a fan translation of this game and the rest of the (not retro) series. Written and planned by the same guy who did the Zero Escape series.
I know moon but I'm too impatient for visual novels or dating sims nowadays.
What could have saved it?
>>3218892
As is? Not much, the hardware just wasn't portable in any real sense, and the battery life was atrocious. The Tv tuner was cool though, maybe if they'd advertised it for an older crowd that travelled a lot and focused on more casual games like tetris.
If they could double the battery life would be golden
Being released by Nintendo.
How much is a Sega Genesis new in box (original plastic wrapping) worth? Includes all accessories, games, and original posters

Huh. Didn't know that. Neat. Are there any other retro games/easter eggs hidden on Google? I remember the Dragon Quest map from a few years back.
Last time 4chan told me to google image search sometime, I wound up on a watchlist.

Anyone ever play the best 3D fighting game on the N64?
>>3217757
lol
The N64 had no good fighting games.
But it's got a ton of bad ones.
>>3217757
>VF2 who?
Ah ha ha ha ha ha!
What are some games that every video game player should play? regardless of whether they like it or not they should at least play these games.
Can be from any genre or system, just which ones do you think everyone should play at least once?
>>3217567
Have you ever stopped to think that some people just play games for fun? For instance, some people only like certain genres so they'll only play those games. You look like a huge poser if you feel like you have to play a game that you don't even like just to fit in.
>>3217608
I think it's not about fitting it but getting a strong and all around experience of games of yesteryear, I'm sure even you've looked back at others general recommendations in hopes of expanding your horizons.
>>3217567
all of the mario games from the 90's
donkey kong
Is anyone on here crazy and rich enough to collect Neo-Geo games?
What's it like? What kind of experiences have you had collecting for it?
I wish. Back in the early days of /vr/ I helped a guy negotiate a deal where he bought pic related from an older couple though.>tfw I've been collecting for decades and have never found a deal like this
>>3217210
Fucking hell
How much did that little lot set him/her back?
>>3217217
He almost got it for chump change but he got too excited on the initial phone call and triggered them to check online prices but I helped him reign it in and use my tried and true negotiation tactics and he ended up getting it for around $600
Is Pokemon Red and Blue a 3rd, 4th, or 5th generation video game?
The console it was released on, the Game Boy, debuted in 1989. However, Pokemon Red and Blue was released in February of 1996 in Japan, yet wasn't released in North America until September of 1998.
So what generation should the game be filed under?
>>3216576
doesn't really matter man, I just see it as a late original gameboy game.
>>3216585
>doesn't really matter
It does when you're trying to write an article on the history of video games.
So I've played most of the Civilization series. SMAC, III, IV, a bit of V. But I never really got much into Civ II.
Where exactly should I start? There seems to be a lot of options for playing Civ II. Vanilla, Vanilla + expansions, Multiplayer gold, Test of Time. Which one is the best to play, ToT looks pretty nice, are there any problems with it compared to vanilla civ II?
Also, what a about mods? Any essential bugfixes or patches, any good gameplay overhauls, or nice graphics mods? I'd like to know.
>>3216528
I've heard a few people recommend freeciv. Most of my experience with Civ2 is the PSX version though, so I've got no clue what the ToT version is like. I can't even really find what it does.
I've never played Test of Time so I can't comment on its quality. I've played the rest though and vanilla Civ II is probably the best place to get started. Multiplayer Gold sets all AI to be permanently hostile which isn't much fun and the two expansions are a mixed bag but fun to mess around with now and then.
>>3217935
Ho lee shit I totally forgot about freeciv. Is it a literal reskin of civ II but nicer looking and open source or is it a bit different mechanics/AI wise?
>>3218132
I heard about the multiplayer gold thing, yea. I mostly play SMAC so the main reason I'm even wanting to play civ II is because I'm looking for something more laid back and easy as kind of a break, hostile AI sounds like the opposite. What do the two expansions add exactly?
What are some of the most crazy and deadly materia combinations?
Miming a double KOTR is pretty broke

Combining Electrolux with Bovril lights a fire on Sephiroth's arse.

Dont tell me you prefer the famicom or the top loader to
>this sexy beast
Hnnnnng
Who are you quoting?
No, maybe it's because I grew up with a Famiclone (that looked exactly like the japanese Famicom), but when I first saw the NES I thought it was bulky for no reason. My friend was like "I have the Nintendo! the original!" and when I went to his house and saw his sister playing SMB3, I didn't even notice a difference with my good ol' Family Game, and wondered why it needed to be so big compared to my cute little machine that could play the same games.
Later I learned that my console was a bootleg, etc. I still have a warm spot for it (and its many bootleg games) on my heart.
I do prefer the original NES over the top loader though.
>>3216354
>bulky for no reason
Seriously. This is the motherboard. Look at all that wasted space.
But that said I really like the boxy stormtrooper design.

I dont know who the new janitors are but this is getting ridiculous.

are there any games where you get 1 hit and you have to restart the whole game?
>>3216328
No I just wonder how much longer will mods tolerate underage anons on +18 site.
I've got whisky and rest of today left for celebration
Congrats man. Judging by the pic you beat this on an emu. I always heard that was impossible due to lag. How'd you do it?
