Sonic never really worked as a game, prove me wrong.hard mode: without resorting to git gud
The 2D games were charming because they had colourful levels and characters, good music and the gameplay was pretty novel at the time, but nowadays the shitty level design is incredibly apparent.
The game has tons of death traps, which forces you to slow down and time your jumps, except sonic moves really fucking slow when he's starting to gain speed, so 80% of the time you're just moving extremely slow and jumping around, and when you actually get the chance to go fast you don't, because you know it's not worth it since there's probably tons of traps waiting for you.
You have limited lives, 1ups are few and far between, and the game throws tons of ways of killing you as cheaply as it can all the time. It's shitty, arcade-like design mentality made to eat your coins, except the game isn't an arcade game.
I see a lot of people going "well, speed is a reward, you get to go fast if you're familiar with the level layout", well, hurr fucking durr, that is literally every single game ever made, speedrunning was a thing before Sonic came out. HAVING to fall into every single trap the game puts before you retrying multiple times just to be able to play the game as it was intended/advertised is a ridiculous notion.
The 3D games don't even need as in depth an analysis, they're either clunky broken games like the Adventure series that had no business being that janky when shit like N64 3D platformers had been around for years, and the ones that do work just basically play themselves.

Why do MMOs still have you level up?
Modern MMOs try to skip it as much as possible. You can click on the quest text to have your character auto-walk there half the time. So why even have them? It's like they're ashamed of it but still devote so many resources to them.
Imagine if all the resources that went toward the level up zones instead went toward the dungeons and would-be-endgame zones that people actually enjoy and spend time in. You'd have a game with a huge amount of content. You'd have a game that could compete on release.
Get rid of leveling up. Get rid of leveling zones. Focus entirely on actually useful content that people won't zip past as fast as possible. Most people don't even see leveling as "the real game" in many of these.

There would still be some kind of progression. It would very likely be something similar to leveling up. An RPG will always have something mechanically similar. It's just that your budget wouldn't be cut in half from it.
Probably just some kind of rank up. Dungeon licenses or whatever. Hell just gold works similar to endgame experience points in games without BoP gear.
