/tg/ is good with concepts, so here is one that puzzles me:

A powerful paladin is wrecking lives and un-lifes of monsters and bad guys everywhere up to a point that they get really desperate. Their desperation opens a possibility for Master of Destiny to pop up in reality. Basically he is a guy(more a concept really) only true desperation can summon and he trades in causality: He makes something happen you want while it is sure something bad will happen to you too as payment. If we had, say, a barren woman wanting a child, she would get pregnant but her husband would die a horrible death.
Monsters and bad guys want him to destroy paladin.

I wonder what could Master demand of/how would he afflict monsters/baddies?

Here's a question for you /jc/: I want to do the whole "I knew you would do that, and so I had my men following me" thing and then have a bunch of soldiers reveal themselves around us. I don't want to teleport them in, I want them to have 'always been there', without having actually been there in case I decide to just blow everything up or something. I want them to be able to come out of hiding and hand over video of whatever just happened, if that's what I need.

Does anyone have *any* idea how I could do this? Retroactively decide to have had my troops follow me?
>>
>>52851778
Precog would let you actually know if they would do that, and prepare accordingly.
It’s not quite what you asked for, but it would work.

As a GM, whats your preferred method of introducing the party during the first session?

Do you like to have all the characters meet there on the spot, or have a previous history?
Do you like to have it start off somewhere mundane like and inn or guild, heeding a call to action? Or instead start in the middle of a perilous circumstance, such as having them imprisoned in the BBEG's dungeon, bonding as a party as they coordinate their escape?

Depends on the set... the story.

I often have them start as work-mates for the same organization. They know each other but they often get to decide what kind of relationship they have and if they've already worked together in the past or not.

Or just make their objectives complementary.
>>
>>52851382
I tell the players what the premise of the campaign is, then I ask them to explain why their character is involved in that premise, any further information is up to them
>>
>>52851382
Depends on the game. For one-shots, they usually have the same goal and meet for that reason.
>You're all aboard the same plane when something goes awry.
>You're all heirs of the same estranged, weird uncle.

For campaigns, usually I try to work it from their character concepts and build some reason for them to meet. I usually encourage playing family members if two characters are from the same race.
Otherwise if I can't find anything else, it's usually "same (bad) place at same (bad) time, forced to cooperate". I've never found a way to make "you all meet at an inn" work.

How do you handle a PC (likely a non-combatant one) backstory of being an extremely wealthy merchant, part of the nobility, or any position of power? Are such characters suitable as PC or are they too influential?

Make them foreigners from faraway lands or exiles who retain their skills but little of their money and connections.
>>
>>52851023

That depends on the tone of the story. Trading off combat ability for political power is something I see acceptable, but if you're going to play a greasy politician in a dungeon crawler-centered campaign, don't say I didn't warn you that it wouldn't be the optimal choice for the situation.

Hey, all.

Recently, I've been running a mecha game, with an unusual twist. The story's largely about a conflict between Earth and Mars, with both sides using Mobile Suit-esque giant robots in order to do battle.

The thing is, while the Martian side has a numerically greater force (i.e. they have Zaku-styled Mobile Suits), the Earth forces (the PCs) have extremely powerful machines that run on arcane scientific principles, allowing for abilities like gravity manipulation, vast plasma beams, personal teleportation, perfect invisibility and other 'weird' powers.

The concept is that the players are Apocalypse Knights - i.e. they're shock-troopers, with a small unit (up to 5 very distinct and unique machines) expect to take on and level entire cities by themselves.

I'm just wondering what could be done, game-wise, with this. I sort of aim for the fights to be equal parts curbstomping and tactical - the players are enormously powerful, but they have a really small force. (Their rules of engagement are simpler, since they're being dropped in to raze absolutely everything in their path.)

What could I do to keep this concept interesting? I'm going with the idea that the players are basically conducting massive-scale terrorist attacks, killing people in their thousands with highly destructive weapons (to break the spine of the resistance) before conventional forces flood in to finish the job.

Obviously, I'm going for a very dark, war-is-hell kind of mood here.

>>52849526
Is there any reason why they are still using mechs to fight mechs, when the technology they've developed is enough to kick Martian ass on its own?

What's stopping them from wiping out Mars with invisible warheads, teleporting bombs into strategic locations or the cockpits of Martian mech pilots and whatnot? You've listed a bunch of technologies without realizing that just about all of them making conventional warfare pointless and give the Earth forces a landslide victory without ever having to utilize mechs.

>>
>>52849565

The machines are basically irreplacable. They're running off a unique power source that basically warps the fabric of reality. Also, you need a psychic pilot to power the death-machine - all the PCs are Newtypes.

How "light" can a rule-lite game be? At what point does it become so light that it becomes boring to play?

Mainly at the point where there are zero options for changing the round-to-round gameplay.

If we're talking the typical TTRPG anyway.

Lightest you can get for combat I believe is making an opposed check, winner deals damage.
So we flip a coin, loser suffers one point of damage.

That's pretty dull.

This is basically correct, also consider your audience - a crowd of drunk friends can enjoy a shitty meme game because of the social factor (See cards against humanity, etc), whereas a lot of the folks who frequent this board see some level of complexity, or even impenetrability to casuals, to be a requirement of good game design.

Define sci-fi. Do you mean, like, a space opera setting with planets and stuff?

Basically you need a region of space that was fully of star systems with a variety of resources but relatively primitive civilizations, many of which hadn't even achieved FTL travel yet. Bonus points if Earth is actually one of these planets and was the conquered rather than the conqueror.

Much of the area of space needs to have been fought or contested by two major powers, with a host of less powerful ones also having a piece of the pie. However all of them have had declining influence in the region for years due to the expense of maintaining control beginning to outweigh the profit of doing so - most African colonies were actually unprofitable, and held largely to deny them to other major powers and/or for the prestige of having colonies and/or as "stepping stones" to get to the actual colonies of profit. For example, the only parts of Africa that Britain actually cared about was Egypt and South Africa, as they formed "stepping stones" to the actual valuable colonies in India. The remaining colonies were mostly bulwarks against the odious French.

Now, here's the big trick. This region of space had to be heading towards decolonization anyway, with a gradual phase-out planned by the various Great Powers, in order to assure stable transition of power (i.e., the plan for Africa was for decolonization to occur in the 70s and 80s). However, due to events back in the more advanced area of space (Europe) and fighting against a retard (Hitler) and his somewhat less retarded but easily amused and provoked friends (Mussolini, Tojo), the money simply doesn't exist to maintain the colonies. Coupled with vastly weakened control, many of the colonies took the opportunity to declare and seize their own independence, with the Great Powers too exhausted and bankrupt from the war back home to put up much more than a token resistance.

Also a superior was friendly and kind enough to tell me I'm gonna be one of the many grunts who'll teach our elf bros how to use guns, aim down them sights, reload, pull the trigger, have trigger discipline. And all that other firearms jazz.

And finally, to any soldiers who're stationed in the elf lands out there. What advice and tips can you give a little ol' corporal about elven culture and whatnot so I don't make myself a complete fool to our elf bros.

Also I just wana make sure I got my understanding of the history of we we the people of Ulgaria and the elves of Sarenbel are now friends and in an alliance:

>An 'evil' faction that is the "Dark Heart Pact", who're essentially Saturday-morning-cartoon villains and are composed of Orcs, Goblins, assorted evil mages, Dark/Drow Elves and even orgres decide to invade and take over Sarenbel.
>Coincidentally, the Dark Heart Pact heard of us; the land of Ulgaria, and decided to invade us too. But we prevented them from setting foot further into mainland Ulgaria because we have guns, tanks, aircraft, battleships and missiles.
>One of the numerous Dark Heart Pact guys who we imprisoned tell us of their invasion of Sarenbel and where its geographical location.
>Ulgarian Military Forces arrive at Sarenbel, make contact with the good elves and both learn and realize we have a common enemy.
>Ulgarian leaders and the elven council of Sarenbel decide to team up to kick the asses of le eveel dark forces with a combination of firepower and magic-whoop-ass.
>Both we the people of Ulgaria and elves of Sarenbel become good friends and decide to make our alliance long term.
>Now Ulgaria helps Sarenbel with certain technological advancements and scientific knowledge, we share some of our firepower with 'em and the Sarenbelians elighten us a thing or two about magic.
>We continue them evil forces out of Sarenbelian lands till they're out.
>And now both Ulgarain and Sarenbelian High Command are planning and or deciding a decisive move against the Dark Heart Pact.

So did I get my little history lesson correct board?

Any 40k fans wanna help me write some fluff for a story?
Going for something more tongue in cheek. Not too silly, just enough to get some laughs, and I want this to be fun.

There are 5 Knight Titans all possessed by a different Daemon of Tzeentch.
1 Atrapos possessed by a Horror (maybe a herald?)
1 Paladin possessed by an intelligent and aware Screamer
1 Errant possessed by a Flamer
1 Castigator possessed by a... I don't know, maybe a Daemon Prince?
1 Lancer possessed by a Lord of Change, he's the leader of the group and has to constantly put up with bitching and bickering from the rest of them

If any artfags wanna contribute, that'd be neat. I do plan on modeling them. For the most part though, just looking for story ideas. Little pieces of fluff. Some origin stories about how they got together, how some lowly Daemons got such a sweet deal, maybe why this particular Screamer is self aware?

I asked /wip/ and didn't get a response, and the 40k generals are so hung up on impending 8th ed that it's impossible to get any kind of attention there.

So this is something that has been bothering me a bit? Y'know how some video games have a morality meter of sorts that tracks how good or evil you've been throughout the game? Well how come so many games are able to pull off morality so well, yet whenever anyone brings up alignment in a tabletop game, everyone loses their minds and the game ends up imploding under its own weight?

If the game has objective morality, why not just treat it as an objective aspect of your character? If the paladin can't do evil actions, why put him in a game where you're generally assumed to be a bunch of vagabonds killing monsters for personal gain, even when diplomacy is arguably one of the better options in the game?

Like, would tabletop benefit from having clear and concise rules that state what's always good or evil? Because I think I'd rather play a game where the game states that killing is always wrong (because it is) than try to claim that killing is wrong sometimes.

>Well how come so many games are able to pull off morality so well

They aren't. Inevitably you end up with retarded situations where you can murder with impunity and get away with it because the 'evil' points you get from killing innocents are cancelled out by the 'good' points from some of your victims inevitably being evil themselves, and that's just one example.

>I'd rather play a game where the game states that killing is always wrong (because it is)

No it's not. For example, if you were to kill yourself, the world would be a better place.

As opposed to tabletop games where you can get fucked out of your class abilities because the DM decided to throw a catch 22 that stated that you were going to fall no matter what? Like I said, if I'm going to get fucked by morality, I'd rather it at least be consistent.
>No it's not.
