I don't know what to tell you Anons.
I know that this is the kind of thing that you can't enforce on an anonymous image board. And I don't care to start a culture war over it.

I will let it rest for now. If someone starts ranting about it in the next couple of threads, it won't be me.

But I was hoping to get to the point where there is an understanding that the square peg goes in the square hole, so to speak...

What are some ideas for adventures in a Slavic setting?
48 posts and 20 images submitted.
>>
>>52847118
Pushing into the vast unknown is generally a very Slavic practice, so something like the campaign being centered around the adventurers either being:

A) The first vaguely civilized people to try to settled a land because it's inhospitable and full of tribals who very much want you dead because your skin's a funny color. (Think the Cossacks push into Siberia)

B) Expansion into already well-settled and civilized territory because some outside influence has forced you out of your home. Having to roam with your family or clan through a land that has castles and armies and people who see you as basically godless heathens. (Like the Slavic Migration period spurred on by the Huns)

C) Alternatively, and somewhat of a combination of the first two, your adventuring party could be made up of a group of upjumped peasants who are actively fleeing their overlords and seeking out a home for themselves while being pursued. (Formation of the Cossacks from Russian/Polish peasantry)

This is assuming you don't just want a D&D dungeon crawl with some Slavic folklore sprinkled in, in which case, just do some basic reading on folk tales I guess. You can find a lot of Slavic fantasy in shit like the Witcher, which has just enough to make it seem like an alien setting.

Another thing you could do is look into the Bogatyri, which is basically the Slavic steppe version of the Knight Errant. They're a recurring theme in folklore and are sort of an all-purpose hero, but if you want your setting to be about Bogatyri-like characters, it has to be a setting with a loooot of wandering and very few sort of central towns to offload loot at. Bogatyri weren't the kind of men to stay in one place, mostly on account of being, y'know, vagrants with swords who were not exactly seen in a kind light by the peasantry or nobility alike.

What kind of weapons could you make in a setting with no ability to make gunpowder for whatever reason?
Obviously melee weapons, bows, and crossbows, but was thinking air guns would be interesting. Pic related.
I figure you could hide advanced scifi crap in pre-fall caches, lasers, railguns, portal gun, etc.
What else would be interesting?

Air guns. They are pretty good, but never really caught up for military use because gunpowder was strictly better. (look up Girandoni Air Rifle)
And you should able to propel projectile with gasoline, similar to how a single cycle of combustion engine works.
High quality rubber gives whole new possibilities to crossbows. Spring guns. Biological weapons, flame/acid throwers. Remotely piloted drones. Autopilot drones. Trained animals. Feral animal throwers.

Honestly, little homemade coil guns are worse in every way than airguns but man are they cool.

That said, you're gonna have to jump through some hoops as to why you can't make gunpowder. It's pretty easy, easier than making airguns by a wide margin too.
>>
>no ability to make gunpowder for whatever reason

This is retarded. Percussion caps and flintlocks are going to be what people go back to immediately once they shoot through all their brass, with some of the smarter ones reloading the brass with blackpowder and cast lead projectiles and primers made with match heads.

This is going to ruin your thread, and you'd have been better off saying instead
>So what kind of neat weapons are going to crop up in the apocalypse given that guns aren't going to be nearly as cheap and easy as they are today?

Bows and crossbows and melee weapons are great, you are particularly going to see a shitload of crossbows because they are more straightforward and the institutional knowledge necessary to make bows really shine died hundreds of years ago.

Air guns, yeah, they had those with blackpowder. I could see them made up like this

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Girandoni_air_rifle

If you can figure out a way of generating a bunch of compressed air very quickly or storing it up, I could see smooth bore airguns made out of metal plumbing fittings and PVC. Even a bike pump would do the job if all you need is a single shot, it would make it a muzzleloader analogue that takes longer to reload but that's still good for hunting. All the way up to pneumatic potato cannons lobbing rocks and wood slugs and other dense projectiles.

Advanced scifi stuff is gonna be your ace in the hole material. You find it and you hang onto it for scenarios where your existing weapons just won't cut it, because it has limited uses/ammo/energy stored and even if you can recharge it you can't build the parts to fix it when it inevitably breaks from wear.

You will also arguably see a return of spears, blowguns where you can take poison from the wildlife, and maybe even the atlatl in the odd post-mayincatec settlement. The atlatl was fucking deadly

I'm not sure if this is a proper derailing, but I remember our crack-addicted DM of our Pathfinder game.

Basically, our ultimate goal was to stop this strange cult from summoning some sort of eldritch horror into our realm, and we had to do it on our own. In order to do that we had to cross an ocean to get to where the cult is actually based at.

However, for some stupid reason, our DM started railroading us into going inland and eventually got us to this cave entrance. Pretty much every one of us wanted to not go in there because it was already retarded that we were there to begin with and there was seemingly no reason for us to go in. Eventually, after some terse arguing we got the DM to fess up and say "some magic book or some shit is in the cave and we need to get it." After that we made the mistake of going in.

Once we get in we're greeted by this bitch here. To give you some context the highest leveled person in our party at the moment was me at level 7, compared to this doom-monstrosity that has CR 25.

The hairs on the back of my neck began to stand up because I actually remembered looking up with this fucker does. It gets even more fucking disturbing because there were two female PCs in our party. Then at once it dawned on my what was probably going to happen.

Not willing to let this autism stand any longer, I was able to devise a plan to get ourselves out of this realm of magic. I used greater teleport to get the entire party back to the entrance of the cave and we basically high-tailed it as fast as possible away from it.

To say the DM was pissed about this would be an understatement. In fact, he got so riled up over it that he relapsed into his crack addiction and got sent to rehab for the third time.

Safe to say we didn't finish that campaign.

Does "letting the power gaming dick head who always looks for loopholes secretly ally himself with the bad guys" count as derailing his own game?

Would an RPG based on For Honor be any good?
13 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
>>52845617
A good rpg system set in For Honor would have to pull it off in spite of the setting, which is bog standard.

All of For Honor's strengths are technical and aesthetic. To make a good ttrpg out of it, you'd need to figure out how to capture the technical feeling of the combat system.
>>
>>52845690
You just need to play RuneQuest, GURPS, Song of Swords, etc. with a shit GM. Anything with engaging combat mechanics.
>>
>>52845690
The only way I can imagine pulling off the mechanics in any similar fashion is a rock-paper-scissors type game where the players choose which direction they will attack/block, then the choices are revealed.

The problem is that For Honor's mechanics rely on the fact that it's NOT turn-based. Capturing the same feel would be extremely difficult, as would any other fighting game.

OP, my best suggestion is to just draw bit-and-pieces of inspiration from it, and use those in normal games.

What, in your opinion, separates a successful and engaging ttrpg from a meaningless series of combats and skill checks? What's the difference between a randomized dungeon filled with challenging traps and monsters, and a meaningful campaign?

I recently tried running a randomized dungeon for fun, and found that it was (unsurprisingly) lackluster, but I can't put my finger on what was missing, or what I'd have to do to turn a randomized dungeon into a campaign.

Hey /tg/ I've just been convinced by my group to run an A:TLA game and I've been having problems finding a good system for it. I've found some decent 5e conversions, but I don't really like delineating benders into D&D classes, especially for stuff like bards and clerics who only kind of work in setting.
Meanwhile, the other system that came to mind, Reign, doesn't really fit for the kind of traveling dungeon crawly adventure game that I wanted to run.

Do you all have any ideas?

eeeeeh, I'm kind of wary of PbtA. I haven't had very good experiences playing it, but that might just because of less than competent people running it.

GURPS on the other hand, I've never even touched, so post that shit. Maybe It'll be just what I'm looking for.

How might one feasibly move a black hole?

I'm having a villain threaten to crash his pet black hole into a star system, but I want some feasible techno-speak to justify it, since I like a tinge of hardness in my sci-fi.

Of course, he has the feasibility to open a warp-portal large enough to fit a black hole, but how does he actually move the black hole THROUGH the warp-portal?

I've seen theories on how one might move a star by pressing a boundary up against it so the star "pushes off" with its own energy. Could you "bait" a black hole to make it move? Dangle some high-density matter just beyond its event horizon to pull it in a direction? Use some kind of space-time-flexer? Block its relativistic jets to cause it to move?

I don't want another way, I want to know how THIS way would work.
35 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
>>52844125
A black hole is affected by gravity just like everything else. If you want to move a black hole, just get a gravity well strong enough to draw it towards it. Any reasonably large star or other black hole should do. Of course, you have some speed issues here: Black holes can't exceed FTL any more than anything else can, so it'll take decades, centuries, or longer to move it to where you want it to go, unless it's close enough already that it's probably already fucking things up.

But really, magic would be much easier.

More relevantly, any sufficiently large gravity well that would allow you to move a black hole in the first place, would be itself massive enough to fuck up any star system it was in anyway. If you have such a mass and have a means to move it, why not just drive your star into the thing you hate, instead of a black hole?

>since I like a tinge of hardness in my sci-fi.

"My villain has a pet black hole that he wants to use as a superweapon" is not the sort of statement one makes when talking about hard sci-fi.
>>
>>52844125
>Could you "bait" a black hole to make it move? Dangle some high-density matter just beyond its event horizon to pull it in a direction?
Yep. They're called gravity tugs, and while I don't think anyone's considered using them to move black holes (mostly it's asteroids or at most planets they consider moving with them) they should work.
>>
>>52844390
That's why I said a "tinge", and said I wanted this solution instead of a reason why I should use another one.

Ok, fa/tg/uys, I need your help with motivation for a villian.

Pertinent Facts:
-The setting is low-fantasy with no magic, and has more of a 'war story' theme.
-People live either safely in walled city-states (the privileged) or precariously in the countryside near them (the not-so privileged).
-Silent Hill-esque monsters are abundant, as are wandering bands of mercenaries who fight in the many wars between the city-states over limited resources in what is essentially a post-apocalyptic world.
-The walled city-states were founded by supernatural beings who led humanity back from the brink of annihilation and protected them. These beings are now inert after living for hundreds of years, and only occasionally, and cryptically, communicate. People outside of the highest levels of government do not know this. Most people think they are still running the show, and have started fighting among themselves.

The villian is a farmer who was conscripted by his city-state during a major war that eventually establishes a single government for most of the small (for reasons that would take a few paragraphs to explain) known world. He goes and does his duty, but returns fucked-up physically and mentally because (insert reason).

I need to bridge a gap where he goes from PTSD-suffering veteran to leader of a 'peasant army' called The Black Hundreds bent on overthrowing this government, eventually becoming a literal monster when his plans fail.

(Two of the player characters are his sons whom he abandoned in his ambition.)

In a world full of body-horror monsters and constant bloodshed how do I make it not stupid that this guy is a special snowflake spurred to action among the countless just like him?

Came here to post this. He was conscripted to go and "protect the lands" only to come back and find the people he truly cared about left to rot and die, pillaged and raped, nothing but charred remains welcome the villain home. Frustration with not only the government, but himself, he takes it out on the only villain he sees that caused this situation to occur. He tries to remain stalwart and resolute in his actions, justifying it to himself that "this is for the best" but in reality he's a broken man trying to divert his attention away from the bigger problem.

So what system do you guys think would work best for playing The Shadow? (and other pulp heroes would be nice)
A good Shadow adventure runs the Shadow and his agents through a fair bit of detective work, a little psychic weirdness, a shootout or two, and usually ends with a fight against a villain with a weird power or gimmick.
Most superhero systems seem a bit too high powered, and a lot of systems (cape games included) don't seem to do gunfights very well. Those that do gunfights well are usually on the realistic end of things and don't really handle a guy who can turn invisible and cause hallucinations and stuff.
So, what do you guys think?

Why would anyone get into 40k if they're just gonna turn it into cutesy-wootsy bullshit? I don't mean just-for-fun type things like Cutehammer; that I understand. I'm talking about the people who want the setting to be full of perfect happy people in perfect happy world. Like those who headcanon the primarchs as cuddly gentle giants, despite no canon evidence to support this and plently otherwise. It makes me sick. If you need every fictional universe to be a hugbox, no offense but this probably isn't your fandom. There are tons of noblebright titles out there. You don't have to force a grimdark one to be something it's not.

I hope you get married anon. Married to a beautiful wife who loves you dearly. I hope you have a wonderful, enjoyable career that challenges you but doesn't overwhelm you, and you retire at a time in your life when you're ready to settle down. I hope you have beautiful kids that you treasure dearly and you live to see them achieve great things in life, and give to you plenty of grandchildren.

Then I hope, late in life, just before your wife dies, you are diagnosed with Alzheimer's. As you see your wife pass away, something will snap, and your mind will regress into itself. You will become a prisoner of your own body, staring out at the world while the world interacts with the body that used to be yours. Your family will abandon you, forced to conclude that the person you once were is no longer here on this earth, even as you scream from inside your own mind, staring out at them but unable to interact with them. You will die alone, forgotten, and abandoned.

In short, I hope you experience the greatest joys in life just so you can have them torn from you at the very end, when it matters most.

Oh, and I hope your table becomes riddled with ring-stains.
