Why do some people struggle with basic algebra and generalizing numbers as letters?
For example, I know people where if I ask them "A car is traveling at 5 meters per second for 2 seconds, how far has it gone?"
and they'll answer 10 just fine
but then if I say
"A car is travelling at v meters per second for t seconds, how far has it traveled?"
Then it's impossible to get an answer from them.
you should stop discuting with monkeys then

I think the thing that surprised me most when trying to teach calculus to people is that they get completely hung up on function notation (y=f(x)) and start multiplying crap out and everything. Idk maybe programming since I was 11 got me used to it? It never seemed hard or even noticeable to me (I honestly thought they always spent way too much time explaining it) but some people just really struggle and I can't understand why.

I mean if you really think about it; feces is just food that's been ripped of all its nutrients passing through your body, nothing disgusting about that.

Here's a fancy thought experiment; imagine lighting a candle at room temperature. The flame is red right? Classic red. Nothing special. Now... imagine that candle was lit in a room as hot as the sun. Still red, or is it blue?
The reason I ask is because growing up I was taught that blue flame is hotter than red but I have never seen blue flame occur naturally. Not even forest fires or lava burning down stuff makes a blue flame. The sun is orange flame. The only blue space stuff I know of are cold planets. So... how does fire ever get so hot in nature for it to be blue? Is it a human creation or did blue flame exist before we invented the means to create blue flame with tools?
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_giant
>>8240458
hot coals often have blue flames
but temperature isn't the only determinant for colour tbqh
>>8240477
So what flame has moods that determine its color? No, trust me, I know a thing or two about the natural sciences and fire is temperature with a physical appearance. There aren't any other things that determine fire apart from temperature. It's heat. It isn't a living organism that occasionally chooses to be one color. It's that way because of the temperature.
Why does General Relativity trigger quantumfags so hard?
Is it because they haven't been able to come up with a testable theory of quantum gravity despite half a century of trying? Or are they just buttblasted because the graviton is a fiction?

Is the exact center of a circle rotating?
(if the circle is rotating)
>>8240300
Great question OP, let's break this down.
It sounds like what you meant to ask is:
>Let G be a one-dimensional real Lie group equipped with a transitive action of [math] SO(/infinity) [/math]. Does it follow that the "center" of G is necessarily a fixed point of this action?
Unfortunately, unless you happen to specify an embedding of G into a Euclidean space, the notion of a "center" in this context (not to be confused with the group theoretic notion!) is ill-defined. Ergo, your question is unanswerable as stated.
>>8240300
It depends on whether you are talking about a single point, or an infinitesimal. If it has geometry at all (no matter how small), then it's spinning. If the point is just a theoretical center point, then it's not.
>>8240323
>>8240321
Lets take it in the physics way.
Lets say an atom its the exact center, its rotating?
And if it is, the center of the atom is rotating?
Always in math we see really strange results, but lets try to not get to the infinitesimal point, as it is the euclidian space.
We can say that the Plank Volume is the minimun volume that exist (of at least have
meaning the position) Where is the inflection point?

Proving integration by parts.
It truly is amazing to think that after centuries of blind acceptance, no one has yet found a completely rigorous proof of this simple (conjectured) identity.

Is galactic civil war inevitable? If humanity expands to other planets, will those plants form a union or will there be planetary war?
There would probably some kind of war in the stars. A war of stars, if you may.
>>8240296
But how would we ever get to the stars? It's no small trek!
>>8240234
Biological humans will never expand into the stars, only an AI, converting all available matter to energy and computronium. In the event it encounters another AI out there, they'll likely merge and continue to expand in a peaceful manner, until the entire universe is mopped up for their purposes.
Get your head out of this 20th Century space opera shit.
If I put a portable AC unit with an 8,000 BTU/h rating in a somewhat poorly insulated room of about 80 square feet with a window facing the south, about how long would I need it to run to change the temperature of the room from 75 degrees Fahrenheit to 68? The temperature outside usually has a low of 70 and a high of 90.
I'm trying to figure out how much it'd cost to run this unit over the hotter months, and what time I should set the timer for so that I only have the room cooled down to when I get home from work.
Any help pointing me in the right direction or answer would be appreciated.
>>8240146
This depends on exactly how well insulated the room is, the wind speed outside, temp outside, the age of your air conditioner, cost of electricity, etc...
This is a hugely complicated problem, not because it is hard, but because there are so many factors. Mind you they are factors that can halve or double your cost.
So do like the rest of us and just log your electricity bills, because it is extremely far from practical to calculate.
Hey /sci/, where the fuck do I go to learn Algebra? I am trying to study for the GED and I've brushed up on all my math except Algebra. I have no knowledge at all in Algebra what so ever, nor have I barely ever done an equation. I DO know programming stuff though if that helps.

What does /sci/ think of LessWrong?
As I see it, it is a hive for pretentiousness. It is essentially a personality cult built around an egotistical socially-awkward autist who unironically believes that super-intelligent AI are going to hunt him down. It seems to attract highly self-centered individuals who believe they are more intelligent than everyone else because they devoutly read their savior's Sequences of blog posts, a few scientific papers, and their first book on philosophy. These people generally tend to be 20-something didn't-think-about-my-political-opinions-twice liberals who have not had sex and are not interested in sex because it's too "normie" or something. Don't take my word for it, they have diaspora survey results right here!
http://www.jdpressman.com/public/lwsurvey2016/analysis/general_analysis_output.txt
Did I mention their Lord and Savior Eliezer Yudkowsky is a fucking autist? Pic VERY related. He also gets legitimate nightmares about thought experiments. Roko is a god-tier troll; God bless him.
Good things about the site:
-They are self aware. They know Yudkowsky is crazy and they know the reputation of their site is fucked.
-Despite their virgin tendencies, some of the residents of LessWrong are actually pretty insightful and good human beings. Gwern, the Lord of the Autists, is an excellent example. His own website is a sight to behold.
-Keeps the circle-jerkers away from the real world.
Am I being too harsh? Is there anything else redeemable about this website?

Atleast they TRY to purify their thinking, even if that´s almost impossible and paradoxial.
But seriously, Lesswrong is fucking shit. I´m thankful my IQ is only 124, so that I can´t join Mensa, which basically is Lesswrong IRL.
