im confused, if the rate of heat flow between two systems is:
∆Q/∆t = -K×A×∆T/x
in this scenario K represents the thermal conductivity of which material?
[math]u_t = -\Delta u[/math]
set all constants equal to 1 nigger

Why the fuck is summer break so damn long in the states?
My school's break is mid-May-August, classes start after Labor Day. As a physics major this long downtime kills me, and I sadly forget a lot of what I've learned over the semester. I try to remedy this by stimulating my brain with material occasionally, but I get lazy over the summer and I hate it. Obviously I need to work harder.
What are some tips and methods you guys use to help retain material learned throughout the year?
Also, I start "Modern Physics" this fall (after the first 2 general physics courses) which entails:
>Elementary quantum physics, atomic and molecular physics, solid state and nuclear physics.
Any suggested readings/watchings before I start the course to better prepare my anus for the tearing that will ensue?
inb4 >just be smart
>>8249493
the 'modern physics' as third semester university physics won't be very difficult
it's just more "Halliday/Resnick" tier stuff
>>8249493
Have you done linear algebra?
>>8249493
You're supposed to use this time to do research if you want to go to grad school, or an internship if you want to work. It's a break from coursework, it's not supposed to be downtime.
How do I build a pressure cooker that reaches 6,000 PSI? I'm missing an important search term I'm sure. Because I'd love to see science on it.
Pic unrelated
Right now I'm looking at Bernoulli’s Equation for a Rotating Fluid.
Seeing if that will lead me to what I want.

are you retarded? you probably shouldnt be building a 6kpsi vessel.
So /sci/, I've been put in charge of making new science displays to get high school kids interested in science for this program my college does.
I'm an undergrad biology & Chemistry major and I know all of the theoretical stuff and lab stuff but I have no idea how to make interesting and practical displays. I'm not making a fucking potato battery.
Do you have any ideas, /sci/? I have access to whatever necessary materials I need, as long as I can purchase them at a regular store. I can order stuff from the Carolina supply company but I'd rather not because of all the paperwork.
I can do anything that doesn't use live animals, chemicals with toxic vapor, most radiation, and diseases. I can use Americum 241 as far as nuclear stuff goes, since it's pretty weak and easily shielded. I've already made some video game app about the cell cycle and a fungus log but I want practical things that have a real purpose.

Quick google search for cool school science experiments solved it. Took less typing than it did for you to make this thread honestly.

I'm aware of that resource and others. I just wanted /sci/'s input as well.
What is the best precalc textbook?

Also, if this is for self study, I would suggest not wasting money on a textbook for precalc stuff. There are plenty of free resources on the internet that all teach basically the same shit.
>>8249374
There isn't one. Trig can be explained in a 30 page pamphlet.
>>8249374
I liked the one by Cohen only because it had a really good solutions manual. You can also check out books by Lang and gelfand.
I'm pretty convinced that nuclear energy is one of the best choices for getting energy at least in the short term (~100 years). I have been pro-nuclear for awhile and I've recently watched Pandora's Promise, which has solidified my opinion.
Can I hear some other opinions? Is nuclear waste really not that big of a deal? Is it not the right choice? Or push your opinion of an ideal energy source.
>>8249329
Nuclear waste sucks, but the over all amount of suck is substantially less than other forms of non-renewable energy pollution. I think we really need to go nuclear+solar for the majority of our energy needs. Supplement with hydro and wind where available.

When you say "our", what/where are you referring to?
CAN WE PLEASE FUCKING DISCERN FISSION AND FUSION
OP is a huge faggot for not knowing the difference
What makes one a good mathematician? Is it predetermined?
In high school, I learned proofs and calculus and even number theory, and I'm going off to uni for math. However, I can't understand certain topics like the Poincare conjecture. Can math skills be honed so much that I can become a good mathematician?
>>8249289
Yes, it's called mathematical maturity
practice
>>8249289
>Is it predetermined?
To a small degree, but in reality it just takes fucking practice.
It's like saying people are predetermined for music. Yeah, there are some people who are just awesome at music, but the majority play just fine with practice.
Any wise guys on here wanna explain this one for me? I know you guys get tired of the /x/ themed threads on here but if anyone can give me a science based explanation for what is being filmed here I will delete this thread and be on my way.

Can someone explain to me how we know the speed of light is constant (in vacuum), and why?
google can answer this question
>>8249053
not it can't
I've spent the last hour trying to find something and all I get is experiments of people measuring the speed of light, and how it was discovered, but I've yet to see an explanation as to why, and how we know for certain.
Because it's the limit of speed at which information is transmitted
If something was faster than light, then that something would be used to transfer information to the past and violate casualty
How can I tell if I'm too stupid to go into a field?
I'm going to school to study comp-sci and math in the hopes of going into machine learning someday. So far I'm doing decent in my classes and I'm good at the math but I still feel like a fucking retard all the time. I know the meme that anyone can get a degree in CS but if I'm too stupid to be engaged by the topic in any meaningful way then what's the point?
>>8248789
>How can I tell if I'm too stupid to go into a field?
Ask yourself if you enjoy that field or not.
>if I'm too stupid to be engaged by the topic in any meaningful way then what's the point?
You say you want to go into machine learning, start working on literally any project related to it and build up
>>8248795
you're right. It's hard to get over self-loathing though
>>8248803
the smallest successes can help push back self-loathing
>Algebra based physics
When will this meme die? At my university we have two introductory physics classes, one called General Physics ( Algebra based for the pre-med students and such) and one called University Physics which is actually calculus based. Why do we allow fuckery?
>>8248777
What the fuck? That is actually a thing?
If you are learning physics without calculus, you aren't learning physics. Plain and simple.
>>8248777

Holy shit anon, that is horrible. Both Newton and Leibniz are probably spinning in their graves from this.
It's grade inflation bullshit.

>>8248737
Didn't a fucking Russian started this whole idea of fusing animal-human embyros? I forgot his name but he injected human semen into monkeys and vice versa.
I think more usefull would be public library first... Its like I threw away dead robotic pigion in trash and human that apeared less inteligent than that walked away, second dead was little bit more with eyes, but that aspect, why the fuck you send robotic pingions(and why they die when they start planking around)?
>>8248741
Main problem is, they somehow send you back robot called freud who fucked own mother and it was... Crazy... Crazy, and hundred years after you all are retarded
Have you ever felt jaded by what you're studying? Like you want to be interested in the subject, and while some parts of it excite you occasionally, you know deep down inside that you actually find it boring.
Please tell me I'm not the only one.
I am usually excited until I realize that I am a poorfag and I need to get a degree and get a job
>boy i sure do love homological algebra
>>8248664
that's why I switched to math
algebraic geometry is objectively not boring
Is child birth cloning or hybridization? Yes this is an actual question.
both
>>8248632
Neither. The selection of gametes occurs before birth.
