How do we know the speed of light if we can't see the protons in it?
>>8521528
how do you know the speed of a plane if you cant see the pilot
its irrelevant
>>8521532
We can actually see the pilot. It doesn't add up you brainlet.
>two things move close to the speed of light in opposite directions
>they're actually moving faster than the speed of light relative to each other
Explain this.

I want to talk and discuss with you guys though.
But whatever.

Maths and physics first year here.
My uni recently re wrote their course so I dunno the courses in my following years.
Is psychology a real science?
>>8520102
please post a more interesting/challenging version of this question, theres already one down on page 4 and it didnt get many comments. plus seen this question like 100 times even before now.
>>8520124
I'll take that as a no.
Didn't think so either. Psychology is all soft and wishy-washy, while actual science prickly and sharp; it has a tactful precision that psychology could never compete with.
Science is hard facts, while psychology is mere feels.
>>8520102
It's a field of study that can be approached scientifically, or otherwise. A psychologist isn't a scientist, but the reverse can be true.
via evolution
is it true that he would be equivalent to a current day high schooler in terms of intellectual capacity
>>8519787
Pretty sure he's still much smarter than a vast majority of smart people.
General populations have mostly increased in intellect (first world). Geniuses are probably happening more frequently, but I don't think we've made a huge leap in ability.
Given all the tools and information of today, I wonder how Issac would have performed.
>>8519799
But what about our top guys
our top guys would smoke the floor with Newton or Leibniz or the great intellectuals of the 17th, 18th century
Would we?
>>8519801
Hard to say. I think people are far more specialized these days. So their brilliant in their fields, but not so much in others.
Can someone explain this meme as it relates to String Theory?
Like when, why and how does it appear in string theory, and what does it explain?
>>8519694
Essentially states that you need 12 dimensions to have a massless particle....
>>8519694
>Like when, why and how does it appear in string theory, and what does it explain?
It's a metaphorical concept.
Left hand-side you have *too much*.
Sometimes, when you are greedy, karma punishes you (right hand-side).
>He that wants all, will embrace nothing.
There are certain times when you're describing something mathematically where you run into an expression like a sum. It turns out that there are certain functions that let you assign a value to that expression that somehow mathemagically still works in the original mathematical description.
In some cases, that expression is a sum, and you assign a value (that is NOT the convergent value of the sum) to that sum. The Riemann zeta function is an example of this. Normally, the Riemann zeta function isn't actually defined for real numbers, but with some mathematical tricks you can extend the domain of the function into the reals, and you get the result of -1/12. Then, in any mathematical model that includes a sum of reals, you can substitute the value -1/12 and it just kinda werks.
String theory is one example of a case where you run into infinite sums of the reals and you can apply this method to simplify the sum into a single value.
So Entropy of the universe increase constantly, but Q = TS. Then the thermal energy of the universe increase constantly.
So how can the first law stay true ?
Consider mass as stored energy. The more that mass is converted to energy, the higher the net temp of the system.
>>8519622
Why did I hate thermodynamics? I genuinely tried to enjoy it.
>>8519631
Same. Just took thermo 1 final yesterday. Some it was awesome, but the book we use for thermo 1-2 is shit and the professor taught us from it but didnt test us from it.
Why do babies cry?
I mean the evolutionary reason is obvious, but what's happening in the mind to implement that evolutionary requirement?
My own hypotheses:
>maybe being born is traumatic
>if crying is the brain's way of dumping excess neurotransmitters during an emotional event too influential for it to physically process then maybe babies cry more easily because their brains are physically weaker
>maybe they're still not quite accustomed to being alive and having normal human needs so whenever they experience anything physically unpleasant they're concerned they might be dying and their untrained fight or flight response kicks in but then as they mature they learn what kinds of physical discomfort are "safe" so it doesn't scare them anymore

Embodiment is constant torment.
We became bipods, because our brain realised we need our legs as a tools.
so what's the next step in evolution?
something with skin?
>>8519364
We will biologically infuse our soft tissues with lead, protecting us from a vast array of radiation. This evolution will be spurred by our move from Earth to Mars, this new species will be: Homo sapien Martius.
>>8519364
Becoming bidick. One to pee and one to fuck.
>>8519378
believe me or not my friend
i tought of that
Hol up
what?
wh..at?
stay with me here
this is seriously a question
so look at YOURSELF and answer me this
in our bodies theres is constant amount of holes (the big ones)
do i have to tell you, right
so among this holes are ears, mouth, eyes, asshole etc.
but listen to me here
some of this holes are perfectly controllable by conciousness/brain like eyes or mouth
some are mildly controllable like butt
and only 2 holes are totally uncontrollable
i want to ask you why that might be
why we cant do anything about our EARS
its like evolutionary somehow explainable but still
what could that mean to us?
why we cant close our ears?
I can literally tell just from reading this you're an ethnic minority

Why are people so scared of ionizing radiation?
>>8518329
Hmm invisible rays of deadly energy that make you sick and usually end in a miserable painful death. What's not to like.
>>8518329
People fear what they do not know/understand.
>>8518336
People expose themselves to unnecessary dangers while trying to convince themselves and others they have some special ability to understand and appreciate a number of dangers including those posed by ionizing radiation.
Of course it's just a miserably misdirected attempt to obtain social status that only ends up giving them testicular cancer at some point.
What I'm trying to say is that you're dumber than the dumb people that are afraid of ionizing radiation, because at least they have a working heuristic, while you've got nothing besides a distorted understanding of the underlying mechanisms and enough desperation to expose yourself to unnecessary danger.
Could any med students help me out? My heart rate is really fucked, I just did a measurement as soon as I woke up and it was 112 bpm. I was prescribed propranolol, to take a fourth of it daily, and the measurement was while I was under the effects. I'm 22, 177cm, ~70kg. I did EKG like 6 times, and it doesn't look like it's a problem with the heart itself. I did ultrasound 10 years ago, and they said the heart is fine, Why do I have such a high heart rate? The doctors seem to have given up and said "it'll probably pass by itself, it's just stress" and that's just fucking wrong, but that's how they explained this to themselves and they won't hear otherwise.
One of the doctors told me to do five pushups and the heart rate jumped to 130+ (she just used stethoscope). I'm not really in good physical condition, but I can do 30 in one go.
It's really high. If your blood pressure is normal, your heart probably pumps less blood per cycle compared to people people, thus it needs more cycles to compensate.
>>8517749
high FT4?
I have low FT4 level and my bpm is around 35-40. The max I can get is 178 while riding my bike at 58 km/h on a flat surface.
Why is caffeine(in the form of coffee, tea, etc) treated so differently to other stimulants/ CNS Stims?
Why is caffeine such a meme?
>>8517435
>Why is caffeine such a meme?
the shitposting never ends
Caffeine is a piece of shit of a chemical.
If there's something wrong with you and starting drinking coffee made a difference then OK.
For anyone else, caffeine reduces cerebral blood flow significantly and hampers deep thinking.
I took up to 600 mg per day for experimentation and nothing interesting came out of it.
Fuck caffeine.
>>8517435
It's a guberment conspiracy. They're trying to control the population with caffeine, and the best way to do that is to make caffeine a socially acceptable drug to digest on the regular.
is there any way to get rid of them easily at home? Micropills and other such products contaminate water with female hormones, and it is not removed at water processing plants with current filtering technologies.
This is not tinfoil hat hysteria and I don't care how little of estrogen is in water I drink, I want to get rid of it. There are articles about subject at least since 1995 in Google Scholar.
One article about removal isn't exactly accomplished with home methods..

No one's going to prove you wrong. /Sci/ is an intelligent board and understands the enormous fallacy of a round earth. It's one of the more accepted things around here, in fact.
So /sci/, what is the science that uses the most "plug and chug" formulas and what do you guys think about them?
Engineering doesn't count
