So I ran across this problem in a test prep book (not homework):

A man can drive 120 miles in either of two ways. Either he can travel at 40 mph the whole way, or he can do the first half at 50 mph and the second half at 30 mph.

I thought they would obviously take the same amount of time, because 50 and 30 average to 40. But the book says the second way takes longer, because of the following:

120 miles / 40 mph = 3 hours
60 miles / 50 mph = 1.2 hours
60 miles / 30 mph = 2 hours

Therefore the second method would take 3.2 hours. Those equations make sense, but I just can't understand how the two methods could possibly be different if the average speed is 40 mph for both (assuming no deceleration time). I know I'm dumb, but what's going on here?

>>
Because that's not average speed. Average speed is total distance divided by total time. Never get your average speed by adding up speeds and dividing them by n.
>>
>>8525382
Because speed is distance over time.
It becomes weighted if you try to average them.

If you want to average them correctly use the distance and time.

Also if I had a wood burning stove in my house I would want CO monitors.

Oh okay, that makes sense. Thanks!

Of all the human behaviors I've encountered, "backtalk" is the most brutish and unrefined one.

Why punish somebody for arguing with you? It's just unreasonable. It's like you're treating them as machines to be used just because you have authority over them. It's barbaric.

I get part i) and ii), but part iii)b) fucked me over.
Here's apparently what the solution is.

I really don't understand how he went from line 3 to line 4. How did he know they were 0? and how did he know it was axb?
>>
>>8525284
Wow OP for a moment I stared at your pic and couldn't figure out how to solve the first exercises, I got desperate and felt like shit, it was really painful. But then I re-read and figured out I had read it wrong or idk, the point is that I figured out I can solve them effortlessly, thank god I'm not a brainlet, cheers op.
>>
>>8525353
Nice one. Could you explain the last one to a brainlet like me - in particular, how he gets the 0s and the axb?

How can you transfer energy without the use of a projectile? All I can think of is sound and light because I'm not a /sci/ guy. Any thoughts?

Yes, but for the purpose of this thread we'll say no. Anyways that shit won't work outside a controlled environment.
I'm looking to essentially transfer the energy of a normal bullet without the actual bullet in a real world environment.

Anybody else feel too stupid to be studying what youre studying?

I am rarely satisfied with the answers I come up with in my HW so I end up googling around for a better solution after trying for a while. It makes me feel really pretty stupid once I see how easy the answer is.

I went to a career fair today to talk to a start up company that has been successful. They acquired a new building downtown and have funds to hire a lot of devs.

First recruiter I spoke to said they don't require you to know X language coming in, but focus on data structures & algorithms. I thought cool, I have a chance of being hired. He introduced me to another guy.

I told him I was interested in a junior dev position and told him about a ML project I worked on. He flat out told me I would not be a good fit for his team, that he would not hire me. He said he needed 2-3 years of experience with an arrogant smug on his face. For some reason he got super defensive and started semi-yelling at me.

I asked him what he recommended so I could get experience and yelled "I DONT KEEP UP WITH OTHER COMPANIES, I ONLY FOCUS ON WHAT MY TEAM IS DOING. I WOULDN'T HIRE YOU. YOU ARE NOT A GOOD FIT. YOU NEED 2-3 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE."

He started to walk off and would't even let me get a word in. I told first recruiter I thought they hired based on aptitude and not X skill sets and he was baffled by what happened.

Fuck this. Why can't I get a dev job as math major when I have programming experience? I literally am crushing my CS courses too.

Thanks. I think he had in mind who he wanted to hire and when he heard I was looking for "junior" positions he nope'd out. But he did it in a very rude way and definite way.

GAGUT is amazing, it is a true and proven theorem.

I have gained a deeper understanding of things like gravitational lensing or quantum vacuum fluctuations by studying GAGUT.
