Camera manufacturers are always pushing for high iso performance, but why don't camera sensors usually go lower than 100 or in some cases, 200? the lowest base iso you can get on a digital camera is 64 on the d810.

Why don't we have any digital cameras that can go to say, iso 25?

Because why would you need that?

Because it's cheaper to use ND

Dynamic range and color bit depth tend to go hand in hand with lower iso.

Why did you allow the narrow depth of field? My eye wants to look at the bottom car in the middle and it's almost entirely out of focus. The focus point seems to be the maroon car in the bottom right.

so i took 10 rolls of film on vacation, managed to get past 3 airport x-rays without any film going through, and then like an idiot i throw my bag through one at the train station without taking it out.

how can i check if the film is fogged or not, before i either throw out or shoot the whole box? should i get a blank roll developed? should i shoot a roll normally and develop it as a test?

for reference, its 7 rolls of tri-x 400 (2 already shot at 1600 but still undeveloped), the rest I also intended to push to either 800 or 1600.
and 3 rolls of CineStill 800T (all unshot)

They'll be fine, there's nothing you can do either way. The 1600 MIGHT have some fogging but I can't imagine a train station is using a scanner as strong as the ones in airports

the train station was Gare du Nord in Paris

i didnt even count on them having an x-ray for the train, but i suppose with the recent dangers it makes sense...

i'm mostly worried about the CineStill because its repackaged motion picture film (Vision 500T) and its SO expensive

Hey /p/, can you recommend any resources for learning to be better at portrait retouching?

I've been shooting portraits, fashion, cosplay, etc for a very long time, and I'm pretty good with direction and the photography side, but I worked with an excellent retoucher for many years and never got good at that side of things. I'm on my own now, and I really need to get better at it if I want to keep shooting this kind of stuff.

What... the... fuck... is that image? The "after" shot looks like a fucking cartoon. Jesus.

Anyways, do some youtube searching for professional retouching. Watch the long ones (like 20 minutes or more) and you'll learn a LOT.

Don't break anything to gain entry into an "abandoned" area (most of these places aren't actually abandoned, by the way).

If you break something for entry, at least in America, you go from a misdemeanor of trespassing to felony breaking and entering. One is a "get out of here, you little scamp", the other is "you're going to do jail time and fuck up your life."

Really, though, just skip the whole urban exploration phase anyway. It's overplayed, lame and dangerous. Literally all stupid dickhead 20 year old males do it.

Oh come on anon, don't be so old and bitter, urbex photos, albeit thematically oversaturated nowadays, still offer a glimpse at something out of the ordinary, often unseen and outside of cliché locations in big cities there's a whole lot of obscure or unexplored places that might offer interesting sights and photos.
Although, admittedly, most contain white city kid's first contact with outside world-themed trash or furniture snapshits. Then again we get jST threads.

The riskiest aspect of urbex is bringing an expensive wide angle lens or lowlight-capable dslr to a potential hobo den/junkie hangout. Everything else is a contextual mix of luck, situational awareness and common fucking sense.

Doing a nude male shoot.
Guy has been working out and wants to showcase the goods. I've never worked with a nude male model and am wondering what works well.
Should I have him shave down and oil up to get hard contrast?
I'm gonna light his short side with a hard rim light. Anybody have experience with fitness/nude males?

How sexual do you want it? I think that getting all oiled up would make it more sexual which may be fine if that's what you want, but if you're trying to do for example more of a marble sculpture type of look then I would probably try hard lighting but dry skin.

Also personally I can just imagine it being pretty uncomfortable photographing a nude man, probably more so than working with nude women. So I guess try not to make it too uncomfortable for both of you.

Just got a little fuji with a 23mm 1.4. I want to take it around everywhere, but it won't fit in my messenger bag so I need a new one.

It also needs room for a laptop for shitposting with maximal efficiency while on the go.

Maybe room for all their charging cables and a few hipster moleskine notebooks would be nice too.

Does anyone know if anyone makes a messenger bag that looks like the attached picture?

Thanks

I'd like some other photographers opinions.

I shot an event over the weekend. They had an area for fun photos while people hung out. That's where I met the only rude people there.

The lady told me to stand up higher and shoot down so I could get a flattering angle...I hesitated for a moment and then obliged.

Later once the alcohol kicked in her husband spilled wine on the dining room floor. He tried wiping it up with a napkin but was spilling more wine in the process. His friends were having a good laugh and I took a photo of it.

He got super mad and started to grab my camera, saying something about "damn paparazzi" I told him "Easy" and jerked it back.

He replied something along the lines of "I'll find you I know people" I said, "I'm right here" and then he walked off

There was about 160 people. All very, very rich people. I'm friends with the host and her bffs. Figured I wouldn't make a deal out of it.

Now I'm editing the photos, and I get to ass and wife. I'm thinking of not even putting theirs in the album. Is that childish? Or justified?

Thanks.

Studying photography, should you do it?
I’ve seen a lot of people looking asking fellow Anons for their opinions on a photography degree on here. The reactions are always the same
>waste of time
>worthless degree
>you can learn everything on YouTube
yet none of these people actually studied photography or even know people that did. For that reason I’m going to try my best you give you a honest experience report of my time as a photography student.

>who are you?
I decided to quit my 9-5 office job in my early twenties to study photography. I’m in my 2nd year now and will receive my bachelor of arts in photography in one and a half years, if everything goes as planned. I don’t plan on getting a masters degree afterwards at the moment.
Before my photography student I was an amateur with only a few months of photography practice. I fell in love with it very quickly, was a very fast learner and noticed that I was pretty good at it.
Quitting my job that early for something that I wasn’t really sure of at the time was a big risk but prevented me from killing myself or living a depressed office life. I applied for only one University, which is something I wouldn’t recommend at all, got accepted, left my family and friends and moved all over the country to start a new life.
I’m sharing this to give people in a similar situation a little hope, sometimes taking these risks is worth it.
That’s about it for personal stuff. I won’t share the name of me or my University since this is not about me. For comparability reasons: the University I visit is one of the most prestigious and well known photography Universities in Europe. I will tripfag for this thread in case anyone has questions.
14 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>I’m interested in studying, what level of experience should I have?
Keep in mind that all of this only be applied to the University I go to. The procedures or experiences may vary a lot in the university you apply.

Photography experience is certainly expected. Studying photography is no evening class on how to operate a camera. So you need to know how to work with a digital and analog camera (35mm).
You also need to be able to take meaningful and well composed pictures. Most of the stuff in the RPT would’t make the cut, your holiday pictures won’t make the cut and your cat pictures won’t make it either. It is expected that you know now to work in a series, single pictures rarely work (this is something /p/ is particularly bad in).
>>
>which University should I choose?
I don’t know, do your research and do a lot of it. The bad name studying photography came from bad places and bad people. Art school is always greeted with smiles because everything calls itself art school to get as much money from hipsters as possible.
Find out the big names in your country and don’t settle with less. If you are afraid that you aren’t good enough for that place, you probably aren’t so go out and practice.
A degree from an obscure place won’t gain you anything. Do it right and choose the best.
Getting in contact with people that study there is a great way if you can get over your social anxiety. You can also take a look at the bachelor works of the universities. If you only see shit then don’t apply. Look for graduates and follow their work, if you notice that a lot of successful guys studied at a certain university, you should take a look at that place. Go though the list of teaching staff and look at their work. Stay away if they are on evening class level shooting weddings and look for the ones with renowned professionals.
You can also look out for the events on campus. I’ve seen universities that don’t support their students at all, others give them time and resources to exhibit their work and push them. They invite famos photographers for lectures and workshops, portfolio reviews or exhibitions on campus.
Another pro tip is to look for a university with other creative study paths. You don’t want to be surrounded by business and law people all day. More of that later ..
>>
>What’s the application process like?

To ensure a particular level of skill and experience you have to apply with pictures rather than grades. You have to have a portfolio of around 20-25 pictures, so around 5 series. In addition to that you will get a homework from most of the universities I know. You’ll get one word and have to bring a series in your application based around that word (for example: the word was „home“ for me. Now you don’t necessarily have to take pictures of your home, but work around the word and create something that makes sense).
If you have your portfolio and homework printed, that is professionally printed, you write a short explanation for each of your series and think of a name and then you can go to the university on the day they told you after you applied.
You’ll spend all day sitting there with your competition until you are up for review. You’ll hand your stuff in and the photography staff will have a look at it, eventually ask you some questions about you and your work and then it’s waiting time again.
The next part differs a lot from place to place, I know of three types in my country:
>you pack your stuff and leave
That’s it. You can go home and wait weeks for the results, you’ll receive a letter with your grade and can enter round 2.

do you do any kind of color correction, noise reduction and so on?

I have no clue what camera he's using but from that still his setup includes very good lighting

If you had lightning that good your videos would likely be much better, and if you want to have more possibilities in post use magic lantern

in any case, use the video thread

Much more important than his camera will be the lighting, the lens, the settings, and processing.

So there was a thread on here, a few of them actually, that MEGAPICKLES started about the Trump rally he photographed.

I'm going to a Trump Rally soon, but on the website it says that you can't bring a camera with a detachable lens into the event.

What did Megapickles do? Did they not follow their own rules? Or did you use a camera that didn't have a detachable lens?

And when I go, if they don't let me in because of the camera, should I say fuck it and just stand outside to photograph the violent Bernie supporters?
