Your favorite shot of all time is a poorly exposed boring photo of some words painted on a yellow thing with distracting shadows at the top? Wow.

I recently saw a video talking about exposure compensation, and I just can't seem to grasp the concept.
I've been using my dslr for 5-6 years now and I have never touched exposure compensation.
Now, I shoot manual at all times. So I guess I don't really need it.
But I still can't understand it's use. Why not simply change your shutterspeed to get the proper exposure from the start?
And you're still shooting raw, so even further, what's the point?
Well it's useful if you shoot in for example aperture priority and just want your picture to be a stop less exposed (you don't have to switch to manual, set the correct shutter speed, aperture and ISO). Also correct me if I'm wrong but I think the Fuji X series only goes down to 1 second and then bulb mode but if you want to do a long exposure at a set ISO and aperture but the shutter speed isn't the way you want it to be (too fast or too slow), exposure compensation can help you achieving the speed you want
>>2840550
Because in manual, any time the light gets brighter or darker, you have to keep changing shutter speed or aperture, and there are lots of opportunities to get it wrong.
With a priority mode and EV comp, you set it once for a scene and let it do the rest for you so you don't have to worry about it.
It's not a game changer, it's just another way of doing it that some people prefer.
Does it even work on RAWs? It didn't seem to work on my D7100 RAWs.
hey /p/ i need your help on this:
im doing soon a photoshoot with a pair of guys depicting a scene. kind of like a movie still. problem is, one of the guys is literally perfect for the part, except hes fucking tiny, a total manlet.
what kind of tricks can i use to make them both at least leveled? shot is supposed to show them sit on a table (profile), so you get to see about 70% of their whole bodies.. i dont think i can get away with it, any ideas?
>>2840544
Put the taller guy further away, and shoot from closer than usual, with a wider angle lens. Put the camera's perspective below them a bit.
Do some googling on Forced Perspective.
>>2840553
thing is, it should look like this. you need to see both of them profiles clearly.
>>2840553
>Do some googling on Forced Perspective.
okay, i would need some prop long table so the bigger guy sits further away. planned on using the 105mm in my pentax 67, for all that creamyness, but the DOF will fuck the trickery.

Cute photo
Beginner of about 2 months now. Just took a trip to Montreal and spent all Saturday afternoon/evening shooting with some friends.
Still working on getting the basics down, as well as practicing light room. I know I need to get some better glass and a tripod soon, so sorry for the noise.
Harsh but constructive critique please.

So I saw this in the TV show nurse Jackie, and I'm wondering what causes this bokeh. Anyone know?
>>2839236
Looks like a telephoto lens with 9-aperture blades at like f/5 or a little higher. When the aperture is open to around the middle f/stops it causes the bokeh to show the blades, unlike a low f/stop which causes round bokeh balls.
/thread
>>2839236
Bokeh is changed by the shape of the aperture blades.

>>2839236
Nothing fancy, these are stepped down aperture blades, simply this is how they close on this lens (not that uncommon)
Which VSCO pack has the most "vintage" film presets in it?
>>2839209
Just download Google Nik and use Silver Efex Pro and Color Efex Pro. Free and better than VSCO.

Also Analog Efex Pro.

Kai is a joke, and his reviews serve no purpose other than pure entertainment. His photos are shit, his reviews are shit, and there is no meaningful information that can truly be gathered from digital rev.

Well friend, you're using up way more space than is necessary on your SD or CF card. There's no discernible difference between medium JPEGs and large JPEGs or RAW files.
what is "contemporary photography"?
ive seen that distinction a lot lately. yo never see a definition, but if you see the pictures, you see more or less a common pattern. its not that they are contemporary because they are active in a certain time frame, but because of their themes and overall look.
pic related looks contemporary. but is it?
alec soth is like the epitome of contemporary, but is he?
how do you draw the line, where do you separate the classics (?) of the contemporary?
>>2839034
what the fuck are you talking about
>>2839034
I'd assume they use the term "contemporary" to mean "now", because in the art world "modern" and "modernism" already have specific meanings and relate to periods other than right now, i.e. contemporary.
hey /p/ i'm not a casual here but I do want to get into photography. I need a camera though, an iphone can only do so much, the battery life is she, and they break easy while backpacking.
I need a good camera for backpacking, I just need a camera that is cheap, takes good pictures and would be lightweight for backpacking.
I'm not a photographer, i'm an outdoorsman, so please hold back the bantz.
Seeing that you didn't give us a price range, I'm going to say the Canon 1Dx Mark II is best for you. :^)
