What are the /o/pinions on Ford Explorers here?
Looking at a 2001 Sport Trac for 3200 with faded paint and some interior damage. Obviously Mexican owned, but everything is in good shape with no obvious problems. Has 150K miles.
Should I bite?
>>15881973
those sport tracs seem to have some sort of meme tax compared to regular second gen explorers.
Be careful buying the sohc 4.0, many problems with this engine. Now I know the sport tracs didn't come with the 5.0 302. so try to find on with the ohv v6, way more reliable than the sohc 4.0.
If i where you I would just get a 95-01 explorer with the 5.0 V8. The bed on the sport tracs is tiny. For $3200 you can buy 2 regular explorers desu.
If you want a manual you can get a explorer sport ( 2 door version) just be sure its the 4.0 ohv. All v8s of this vintage came with autos.
Again I would take a v8 auto just for the sheer reliability of the 302 and the 4r70w which is a very stout transmission.
If you are willing to spend a bit more look for a mercury mountaineer. Same as an explorer and usually come with a lot more options from the factory.
t.owner of 3 for explorers.
>>15881973
Why? Why not just buy a civic?
>>15883105
This man knows what he's talking about. 150k miles is right around the time shit can really hit the fan on an 02-05 Explorer in terms of the SOHC V6 timing chain guide/tensioner cassette (has them front and rear, rear is an engine-out job). Then it's wheel bearings, transfer cases, transmissions. 95-01 V8 is the one to get.
Hi /o/. I have 8k and I want to build a fast bmw. Looking for HP only, handling doesnt mean much in Kansas. I'm comfortable doing anything up to and including a head swap on my own. I've never done a turbo but I'd give a kit a try.
What car should I get and what engine mods should I do? Big bonus points if it's a good looking car and not an absolute cunt to work on.
Get a 325e
The e stands for ecoboost
If handling doesn't matter get an e39 540i or maybe a salvage e92 M3. You could get a fair e36 M3 but really is a waste of a fantastic handling car to just put all in power. Go for a V8 BMW for straight line speedy race race.
>>15881823
Get a shell and drop an LS in it.
>$150,000
JUST
>6T9
What did they mean by this?
>$120,000 for a body kit for a piece of shit highschooler car
>>15882956
Looks like GTO from a distance. When sounded out it's a sexual position, because that's still funny somehow.
Why are Chevy's such shit
Why are our picture-taking abilities such shit?
>>15875543
>Chevy
>shit
That's not how you spell Ford.
>>15875574
Hey /o/ what kinda carberoutor outta go on my motor it's a straight 6 outta 64 malibu
>>15881358
single barrel rochester.
>>15881358
How bout while that boat anchor is out you just put a small block in. Chevy straight six a shit.
>>15881358
any type of 2 bbl carb would go nicely with that.
1 bbl if you want muh economy.
I have been researching used late model cargo vans and the chevys seem to get way better gas mileage
A 1500 with a V6 or small V8 can get around 20 mpgs but the fords only get 12 or 13.
Why is this?
My v6 truck was rated at about 20... it gets 13. Don't believe that. Besides, I think ford vans start at 3/4 ton.
>>15881139
Having driven both versions the Ford has an ohc design, you have to get it to 3k rpm just to keep up with traffic. Dont get me wrong its a good engine but its so massive that the passenger compartment is limited because of it.
Gm vans have pushrod engines, you can keep the rpms low and the torque will keep you going. Ive only had experience with the 6.0 so i can't speak for the smaller engines but they are definitely quick for a van.
If you must have a van skip on the v6. Definitely go with a gm, they are so much better than e series vans.
>>15881172
What kind of truck?
What are your driving habits like?
Would you work under this /o/?
>work
>>15881131
in a pinch and if its a 4x4 truck with it's suspension still on yes, taking mind not to get under the axles.
a set of 5ton jack stands are only $50 though
>>15881131
That's certainly not ideal, but at least it's not just the jack.
What's the most reliable shitbox that you can pick up for 3000-5000 dollars?
Doesn't need to be nice but just be reliable and take you places where you want and not leave you stuck somewhere you don't want to be.
>>15881109
read the fucking sticky.
and then buy a civic and stfu.

Not that Cross Country bullshit, I'm talking pre-1994

Toyota camry or Corolla. Better build quality and reliability than the civic, but parts might be more expensive.
redpill me on dsms.
i want an 11 second street car that I can daily driver. I do have a daily driver now but i want a fun car to put some time in that with like 5k-8k could run 11s and not kill me on insurance/gas to drive frequently.
There arent many dsms around here and they seem like a pretty good platform if i could find one that isnt shit.
Anyone DSM people on here who can redpill me on them a bit? I have about 4-5k to spend on a car and could put in a couple thousand after probably.
Anything that's not 1g is shit.
Make sure to get turbo and
Afaik they use a 50/50 awd system so it's actually good.
Too bad the engines the wrong way
stopped reading at
>redpill
>>15881095
Why? It's no different than just saying "what should I know about DSMs"
Why do people like you get offended when slang exists
How can we convince car companies to stop hiding engines under windshields?
>>15880039
its not like you were using that space anyway
>>15880039
putting the engine further back is good for weight distribution. The only problem is that the hood on new cars is too short and the engine sits on the front wheels even with it pushed under the windshield.
Well, time is coming up to make the big DIESELGATEā¢ decision. The numbers rounded to the nearest hundred are:
$29000 for the buyback
$7400 for just the settlement and keep the car
Right now, I'm leaning towards keeping it because I happen to really like it and it's about as rare a TDI there is out there
>last year of the tdi wagon (2014)
>6-speed
>18k miles
>panoramic sunroof
What would /o/ do?
bump
>>15879645
>>15879680
I'd take the buyback. The whole scandal will definitely hurt resale value, plus it's already 2 years old. Yes it's rare for what it is, but you could get a lot of better cars for that kind of money.
If you really don't think you'll ever sell it, go ahead and keep it, but I think the buyback is the smart idea.
Britfag here.
Thank god you Ameribros killed the """"clean diesel"""" meme before it fucking took off. Props.
Will getting new pads and rotors improve pedal feel?
Car has 110k miles. Rotors are stock and pads look like they have 30% life left
Yes
It depends on the pad as well. I had a mushy pedal in my car ( that worked fine, just had long travel ) so I got new pads and rotors. New pads and rotors seemed to fix the trick for me as it stiffened my pedal up real good and stopped harder. ABS kicks in now because I stop so hard.
>>15879516
How could new pads or rotors possibly give you a firmer pedal?
>>15879652
It doesn't
>tfw you downshift from 5th into 2nd by mistake
>>15879450
Borrowed my brothers chebby S-10. Had that shit happen to me all the time with the H being smaller than a virgin pussy but wobbled in every gear like a Malaysian whore.
