https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-10-17/how-apple-scaled-back-its-titanic-plan-to-take-on-detroit

>Apple Inc. has drastically scaled back its automotive ambitions, leading to hundreds of job cuts and a new direction that, for now, no longer includes building its own car, according to people familiar with the project.

>Hundreds of members of the car team, which comprises about 1,000 people, have been reassigned, let go, or have left of their own volition in recent months, the people said, asking not to be identified because the moves aren’t public.

>New leadership of the initiative, known internally as Project Titan, has re-focused on developing an autonomous driving system that gives Apple flexibility to either partner with existing carmakers, or return to designing its own vehicle in the future, the people also said. Apple has kept staff numbers in the team steady by hiring people to help with the new focus, according to another person.

>Apple executives have given the car team a deadline of late next year to prove the feasibility of the self-driving system and decide on a final direction, two of the people said. Apple spokesman Tom Neumayr declined to comment.

>The new shift and deadline come after months of strategy disagreements, leadership flux and supply chain challenges inside Apple’s unmarked car labs in Sunnyvale, California, a short drive from its Cupertino headquarters.

>Apple isn’t the first to realize mastery of mobile gadgets and software updates is no guarantee of automotive success. Alphabet Inc.’s Google learned the challenges of building its own vehicles and has sought partners. Its car project has also suffered departures. Tech investors are dubious too. They’re used to fat profit margins, while carmakers survive on net margins well below 10 percent.

Not Apple's fault (apple hater here).
Car industry is very different compared to electronics industry.
Bad cell phone = bad day (until you get a replacement)
Bad car = loss of limb or life

How big are the individual settlements for Note 7 fires compared to automobile settlements?

http://arstechnica.com/science/2016/10/nasas-juno-spacecraft-has-a-problem-with-its-engine/

>For NASA's Juno spacecraft, all had been going well since its July 4th insertion into orbit around Jupiter—as well as things can go when radiation is slowly eating away at a spacecraft, that is. That ended when mission managers tried to send a command to the robotic probe on Thursday.

>According to a NASA news release, two helium check valves that play an important role in the firing of the spacecraft's main engine did not operate properly during the command sequence. "The valves should have opened in a few seconds, but it took several minutes," Rick Nybakken, Juno project manager at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, said. "We need to better understand this issue before moving forward with a burn of the main engine."

>NASA had intended to fire the spacecraft's Leros 1b engine, its primary source of thrust, next Wednesday. The goal was to bring Juno into a shorter orbital period around the gas giant, from 53.4 to 14 days. The optimal time for such a "period reduction maneuver" is when the spacecraft is closest to the planet, so Juno's next opportunity for this engine burn will not come until Dec. 11. This was to be the final burn of the Leros 1b engine, which fired perfectly on July 4 to put Juno into a precise orbit around Jupiter. Future maneuvers can be conducted by smaller onboard thrusters.

>Mission scientists emphasized that the longer orbital period would not affect the quality of science that Juno can collect as it flies close to the planet's poles. However, if the issue cannot be resolved, the spacecraft will not be able to make as many flybys as scientists hoped due to expected degradation of the spacecraft and its scientific instruments as it flies through Jupiter's harsh radiation environment. NASA hoped Juno would make 36 orbits during the next 20 months.

Government Collects $3.27 Trillion in Taxes in Fiscal Year 2016
Gov’t still runs $587 billion deficit despite collecting record taxes

The federal government collected $3.27 trillion in taxes in fiscal year 2016, according to the latest monthly Treasury Department statement. The federal government ran a deficit of $587 billion despite the record revenue.

Treasury receipts include tax revenue from individual income taxes, corporate income taxes, social insurance and retirement taxes, unemployment insurance taxes, excise taxes, estate and gift taxes, customs duties, and other miscellaneous items.

After adjusting for inflation, the amount of taxes collected by the federal government in fiscal year 2016 is slightly lower than the $3.3 trillion the government collected in fiscal year 2015. The 2016 fiscal year begins on Oct. 1, 2015, and runs through Sept. 30, 2016.

The federal government collected $3,266,688,000,000 from October through September in fiscal year 2016. Most of the $3.27 trillion came from individual income taxes, which comprised almost half of that total at $1.55 trillion.

Although the federal government brought in approximately $3.27 trillion in revenue in fiscal 2016, according to the Treasury, it also spent approximately $3.85 trillion, leaving a deficit of approximately $587 billion.

https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/universe-has-10-times-more-galaxies-than-researchers-thought/

>The observable Universe contains about two trillion galaxies—more than ten times as many as previously estimated, according to the first significant revision of the count in two decades.
>Since the mid-1990s, the working estimate for the number of galaxies in the Universe has been around 120 billion. That number was based largely on a 1996 study called Hubble Deep Field. Researchers pointed the Hubble Space Telescope at a small region of space for a total of ten days so that the long exposures would reveal extremely faint objects.
>More recent deep-field studies conducted using Hubble—after NASA astronauts upgraded the observatory in 2009—and other telescopes enabled Conselice and collaborators to count visible galaxies out to distances of 13 billion light years. They were able to plot the number of galaxies of a given mass that corresponded to various distances away from Earth. The researchers then extrapolated their estimates to encompass galaxies too small and faint for telescopes to pick up. Based on this, they calculated that the observable Universe should contain 2 trillion galaxies.

Why can't they assume that there is an infinite number of galaxies

Because that would mean the universe is infinite in size, which contradicts the big bang theory. The big bang theory being the prevailing scientific cosmological model of the universe.

>EDISON, N.J. — Donald J. Trump declared himself “a big fan of Hindu” and praised India’s nationalist prime minister, Narendra Modi, at an Indian-American charity event on Saturday.

>Mr. Trump spoke at a benefit put on by the Republican Hindu Coalition at a convention center in Edison, N.J., a non-battleground stop that is hardly typical for a presidential nominee three weeks before an election.

>Still, Mr. Trump seemed thrilled to be there.

>“I am a big fan of Hindu, and I am a big fan of India,” Mr. Trump said, seeming to entangle the faith with the nation. “Big, big fan.”

>While polls show that Hillary Clinton draws far more backing from Indian-Americans than Mr. Trump does, his anti-bureaucracy and country-first language closely tracks that of Mr. Modi, who has tapped into the disgust that India’s Hindu majority feels toward its government.

>This has given Mr. Trump a foothold of support among Hindus in the United States, some of whom are also drawn to his strong talk about Muslims, their longtime adversaries on the subcontinent.

>Mr. Trump said that Mr. Modi’s view of government was in line with his own. “I look forward to doing some serious bureaucratic trimming right here in the United States,” Mr. Trump said.

>His remarks were preceded by musical numbers set to Michael Jackson tunes, and by a sketch depicting terrorists attacking a nightclub. Proceeds from the event were to go to victims of terrorism.

http://www.politico.com/story/2016/10/roger-stone-fbi-wikileaks-russia-229821

>A longtime Donald Trump confidant said Friday he is unfazed by calls for a federal investigation into allegations he’s colluding with WikiLeaks and Russian intelligence to sabotage Hillary Clinton’s campaign.

>In an interview with POLITICO, Roger Stone said the FBI hasn’t contacted him to discuss his relationship with WikiLeaks and a series of anti-Clinton public statements that Democrats interpret as evidence he was well aware of the hacking into campaign chairman John Podesta’s Gmail account.

>“I have not” heard from the FBI, Stone said. “But I’d be happy to cooperate if they decided to call me.”

>Stone, a longtime GOP operative and one of the youngest members of Richard Nixon’s infamous 1972 reelection bid, has taken on an outsized role in the murky world of the WikiLeaks documents thanks to his personal boasts of having regular contact with the group’s founder, Julian Assange, through “mutual friends.”

>Several months ago, Stone predicted an October surprise that would disrupt Clinton’s campaign and his recent Twitter posts suggested Podesta would soon be facing scandal, including an August update stating, “Trust me, it will soon the Podesta’s time in the barrel. #CrookedHillary”

>Speaking to reporters earlier this week on Clinton’s airplane, Podesta confirmed he’d spoken to the FBI on Sunday as it probed the criminal hack into his email and he leveled a charge that Stone had “advance knowledge” of the document leaks.

The New World screwworm, which can kill livestock within two weeks, was found on animals in Big Pine Key and No Name Key in Florida earlier this month, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

There have been no human or livestock cases, the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services said.

“The screwworm is a potentially devastating animal disease that sends shivers down every rancher’s spine. It’s been more than five decades since the screwworm last infested Florida, and I’ve grown up hearing the horror stories from the last occurrence,” said Adam Putnam, Florida Commissioner of Agriculture.

Officials plan to keep the infestation from spreading while eradicating the New World screwworm flies from the affected Keys. They will trap flies to determine the extent of the infestation, release of sterile flies to reduce the population and disease surveillance to find other affected animals.

Using sterile flies to breed the insect out of existence has worked in the past. The USDA used the technique in Florida in 1957. By 1959 the flies were gone. It was used more extensively throughout the south and southwest to completely rid the area of the insect by 1982.

While not considered an infestation, the screwworm has been found in the U.S. since then. A dog that entered the country from Trinidad and Tobago in 2007 was found with screwworm larvae. Another dog was found with screwworm larvae in 2010 when it came to the country from Venezuela.

“This foreign animal disease poses a grave threat to wildlife, livestock and domestic pets in Florida,” Putnam said. “Though rare, it can even infect humans. We’ve eradicated this from Florida before, and we’ll do it again.”

In the Philippines, there is a young Filipino who leads one of the most powerful ngos in the world, with millions of members, and have ties with leftists, socialists, muslims, and catholics, politicians and military personnel. Aside from the fact that two Filipinos students have created the Iloveyouvirus, this ngo and its leader have created some of the most powerful ciphers in the world: many of which were mentally calculated and which processes cannot be recorded even by the most advanced drones and surveillance systems in the world. This young leader has also undermined the doctrine of MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction), and has pointed out, not only that the United States and its allies would be outnumbered by its enemies, but Russian and Chinese EMP weapons technology have also surpassed that of the US. The young Filipino has repeated warned his fellows of the potency of Russian jamming technology, such that NATO would look like a mere insect. Furthermore, not only has the US has been plunged in a debt of over 19 trillion dollars, but its politicians also worry that its nuclear deterrent is behind that of its enemies.
There is no valid reason for the US allies to continue in their dependence and “trust” in the United States. Remember the Turkey Coup Plot and the Brexit results. The NGOs can unite even against the most powerful nations in the world. There is no reason to believe in American propaganda. The Arabs reportedly own over 14 trillion dollars worth of assets, and it would be easy for them to unite with pro-Muslim and pro-socialist NGOs…even to declare war against a superpower, if necessary. The young Filipino has estimated, that a budget of 5 trillion dollars would be enough to create a military power, more than two times as potent as that of the United States.
