A Viking-era rune stone that went missing for almost two centuries has been found after a Swedish archaeologist stumbled on it almost by chance.
The find took place during installation work of a lightning conductor at Hagby Church, west of the central Swedish university town of Uppsala. It was found underground a few metres from the building.
"We knew that there had been a medieval church there, but didn't know that this rune stone was in that exact location," Emelie Sunding, archaeologist at Uppland Museum, who was present during the construction project to preserve any historic remains discovered, told The Local on Wednesday.
Archaeologists believe that the rune stone, measuring around 180 by 135 centimetres, was first erected in the mid-11th century. Records show that it was used as a threshold leading up to the church porch in the Middle Ages, before somehow disappearing when the old building was torn down in the 1830s.
"The stone is known from before. It was depicted in the 17th century and when the medieval church was torn down in the 19th century we have written records that mention the stone as lost and that it had maybe been moved," said Sunding.
The rune stone is well-preserved, but one piece is missing so not all the inscriptions can be deciphered. A drawing from the 17th century quotes some of the runes as saying: "Jarl and …stone for Gerfast, his father".
According to archaeologists, the stone was made by Fot, a runemaster who lived and worked in the area in the mid 11th-century and has created and signed several famous rune stones found in Sweden.
"This one isn't signed, but we can tell from the style and the ornaments that this is Fot," said Sunding.
The runestone will now be cleaned and then possibly re-erected at Hagby Church.

>The 2016 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos for his efforts to end his country's long-running civil war with FARC rebels.
>The Nobel committee made the announcement in Oslo on Friday, five days after voters in Colombia narrowly rejected a peace deal that Santos' government had spent years negotiating.
>In its citation, the committee said it had awarded Santos the prize for "his resolute efforts to bring the country's more than 50-year-long civil war to an end, a war that has cost the lives of at least 220,000 Colombians and displaced close to six million people."
>It added: "The award should also be seen as a tribute to the Colombian people who, despite great hardships and abuses, have not given up hope of a just peace, and to all the parties who have contributed to the peace process."
>Santos accepted the prize "in the name of the victims," adding "we have to persevere and reach the end of this war."

Are Muslims actually the problem? Or are Swedes not doing enough to stop them from committing terrorism

>SpaceX is developing a massive rocket and capsule to transport large numbers of people and cargo to Mars with the ultimate goal of colonizing the planet, company chief and tech billionaire Elon Musk said on Tuesday.
>Musk outlined his plans for the Mars rocket, capable of carrying 100 passengers plus cargo per voyage, even as SpaceX is still investigating why a different rocket carrying a $200 million Israeli satellite blew up on a launch pad in Florida earlier this month.
>SpaceX intends to fly to Mars about every 26 months when Earth and Mars are favorably aligned. Musk said he would like to launch the first crew as early as 2024, a schedule he said was optimistic.
>Musk said there would be no guarantee of survival for anyone signing up with SpaceX for the "incredible adventure" of a trip to Mars.
>"The risk of fatality will be high. There's no way around it. Basically, are you prepared to die, and if that's OK then you're a candidate for going," he said at a presentation at the International Astronautical Congress meeting in Guadalajara. Though Musk said he envisions humans living in a large colony on Mars and possibly terraforming the planet, he added that one key issue will be getting the cost low enough to attract customers. "You can't create a self-sustaining civilization if the ticket price is $10 billion per person," he said. "Our goal is to get it roughly equivalent to (the) cost of a median house in the United States, about $200,000."
>Mars colonists would not have to sign up for a one-way journey since reusing the spaceships keeping the transportation costs low, Musk said.

Emergency personnel gather around the large pit at the Wichita Falls, Texas, Transfer Station where garbage is dumped by city trucks. WICHITA FALLS, Texas — A man who apparently sought shelter inside a trash dumpster got picked up by a Wichita Falls trash truck, compacted and taken to the city’s garbage transfer station where he was dumped into a pit and the trailer of a larger truck.
Wichita Falls Fire Department Battalion Chief Mike Davis said witnesses saw the man tumble from the trash truck into the pit Friday and called for help.
Fire and other emergency arrived on the scene and attached a rescue basket to the arm of a large backhoe-type machine, which was lowered into the pit.
Davis said the man was conscious when he was brought up. He was taken by ambulance to a hospital. Davis did not identify the man, but said he appeared to be about 60 years old.
“I’ve been with the department 33 years and this is the first time I’ve ever seen anything like this,” Davis said.

LOS ANGELES — Prosecutors are declining to criminally charge eight Los Angeles police officers who injured two innocent women after mistakenly riddling their pickup truck with more than 100 bullets during a manhunt for cop-turned-killer Christopher Dorner, according to a report released Wednesday.
the drivers fault for driving a truck that looked nothing like Dorners and not marking it with giant letters that said "Not Christopher Dorner, please don't shoot"

They did it with their best intentions in mind: to take down Dorner with the maximum amount of caution, making sure none of their precious police officers were at any point in harm's way. Bystanders getting shot is a small price to pay, to keep the police safe.

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2016/09/13/exile-snowden-requests-presidential-pardon/90279602/
>Edward Snowden, the National Security whistleblower to some and traitor to others, said he will seek a pardon from President Obama for his role in disclosing a series of documents showing government surveillance on American citizens.
>But the White House appears to be disinclined to consider his case as he remains exiled in Russia rather than face charges in federal court that he violated the Espionage Act.
>In an interview with the British newspaper The Guardian published Tuesday, Snowden doesn't dispute that he broke federal law by stealing secret documents about eavesdropping while employed as a contractor for the National Security Agency.
>“Yes, there are laws on the books that say one thing, but that is perhaps why the pardon power exists – for the exceptions, for the things that may seem unlawful in letters on a page but when we look at them morally, when we look at them ethically, when we look at the results, it seems these were necessary things, these were vital things,” Snowden said.
>Obama has given few pardons during his presidency, instead focusing his constitutional clemency power on commutations for drug offenders who he says received disproportionately long sentence as part of a decades-long "war on drugs." And in response to a question from USA TODAY last month, Obama said he would not follow the practice of past presidents in granting last-minute, politically motivated pardons, instead requiring all pardons to go through the formal Department of Justice process.
>On that basis, Snowden appears ineligible for a presidential pardon. While presidents can pardon people not convicted of a crime — President Gerald Ford pardoned President Richard Nixon, after all — the Obama administration guidelines require an applicant to wait five years after a conviction and pass an FBI background check, a process that can take years to complete.

conservative source:

He's absolutely right. Because James Clapper was lying to congress under oath, breaking the law was the only possible way to expose the unconstitutional behavior of the NSA. He did it in defense civil rights, and he hurt exactly nobody. If a criminal justice system exists that would send a man to prison for that, it does not deserve to be humored, and if the presidential pardon can't be used for that, then it should not exist.
The fact the everyone in the U.S. government responded to his heroism by getting angry about the fact that it's now marginally more difficult to violate people's civil rights on a global scale and claiming that he should have used internal channels, when it's public knowledge that he'd watched multiple peers attempt that and fail, had ought to tell you what a totalitarian shit hole the U.S. really is.

>Because James Clapper was lying to congress under oath
Whoa there, Anon! Let's not accuse Congress of looking the other way when they happen to agree personally with what the person under oath is saying, unlike say Comey or Hillary...
I think the real story here is that Snowden apparently thinks both Hillary and Trump would be a lot less lenient on him if he came back to face the music than how Obama's administration would treat him.

If that had been written by a western airline, blm and various progressive groups would be screaming racism and bigotry. http://www.businessinsider.com/china-may-be-the-one-to-bail-out-deutsche-bank-2016-10?IR=T&r=US&IR=T
>It looks like the stage is set for China to bail out the West yet again. Nothing is set in stone, of course, but China would seem to be at the top of the short list of those with pockets deep enough to bail out the highly leveraged Deutsche Bank.
>Saudi Arabia, like China, participated in the “great bailout” of the West during the Financial Crisis, but now, it is distracted by politics, war, and low oil prices. Several sources say the newly launched Turkish Wealth Fund could be another possibility to take a stake in DB. So far though, Turkish officials have not commented on this. Frankly, China seems like the logical candidate to bail out DB. The People’s Bank of China (PBOC) has plenty of cash. $14 billion is just a drop in the bucket. And the Chinese government would love the prestige of being a major stakeholder in a huge European financial institution.
>It’s almost a given that Chinese President Xi would love a chance to put China back on the world economic stage in a positive light. So the only question is whether a Chinese bailout of Deutsche Bank would be acceptable to Germany, the rest of Europe, and the financial sector in general? While there is no clear answer, a strong argument can be made that a Chinese institution taking a major stake in DB is the best answer for all parties. A Chinese bailout not only provides a financial backstop for DB, it gives the German government political cover. It also gives China a much-needed boost in prestige at a critical moment in its own economic transition.

Free Harambe - Black man tackled by white officers.
During a Detroit Lions at Chicago Bears football game on NFL Sunday, a "streaker" decides to gain access to the football field and run around for a while before being tackled. He was wearing a shirt that said "all lives matter" on the front and "put the guns down" on the back. It was a message of peace, one of love, one of unity. Then the mainstream media got their hands on it and tried to turn it into something else.
After the identity of the man was revealed, there don't seem to be any retractions issued by people who labeled the man as a racist for wearing a gorilla outfit and an "all lives matter" shirt. Some so-called journalists automatically assumed that the person was white and trying to mock black people. When in reality, even if he was white, his message was one of peace. Just because the shirt said "All Lives Matter" does not make some type of racist or separatist.

That's a funny way of saying Barry Obama
Police in the western Indian city of Thane have arrested more than 750 people suspected of defrauding US citizens from a fake call centre.
Officers say the suspects obtained lists of US tax defaulters and used threats to obtain their bank details.
The scam is said to have netted more than $150,000 (£118,000) a day, making it one of the biggest frauds in India's history.
Thane police officials said they were contacting the FBI to ask for help.
Some 70 of those detained were formally arrested, police said, with the rest released pending further inquiries. Nine people believed to have led the scam have been identified.
The scammers pretended to be members of the US Internal Revenue Service, and told victims they owed back taxes.
In some cases, the victims were duped into buying gift vouchers from different companies and bullied into revealing voucher ID numbers, police said.
The scammers then made purchases with the voucher numbers.
Police say those involved in the scam at the Indian end retained 70% of the earnings, with 30% going to their US collaborators.
Paramvir Singh, the police commissioner of Thane, told reporters that 851 hard disks, high-end servers, and other electronic equipment had been seized.
Mr Singh said overnight raids on Wednesday had lasted well into the morning, and involved more than 200 policemen who had raided buildings in three locations in the city.
Thane police superintendent Mahesh Patil told BBC Hindi that the investigation could open up cases from other countries as well.
A US State Department official said: "We have seen reports and are following the situation closely to confirm any US citizen involvement. We would refer you to the local Indian authorities for further details on the case."

Does this indicate a greater takedown of Indian scammers? Or have the police been doing this for a long time and this is just a major bust?
